It's a nice, friendly place with knowledgeable staff and a huge selection of beers, many real ales among them (tap or bottled). This is the official tap for Derby Brewery, so of course you will be able to sample any of their brews which, on balance are rather nice. They are not brewed on the premises though. Speaking of sampling beers: They do offer a convenient "tasting board" which consists of five smaller glasses, which add up to about 2 full pints (You can pick the beers you want yourself from their in-house brews) and a small bowl of cheese to cleanse your palate in between trying the beers. It's a recommended and nicely inexpensive method. See my photo. Again, this is a fairly modern pub that also offers decent food. It is popular with the young and older punters alike, although it may most appeal to hipster folk. Atmosphere is bright rather than rustic. Prices are normal for Derby, and vary between beers of different strength (due to the British beer tax), which might be an unfamiliar concept to visitors from abroad. Recommended as part of a Derby pub crawl.

They have an after work drinkers club for locals that seemed like a tremendous idea that more pubs should follow. The best of my beers was the Quint Essential. Stronger than I like in the afternoon, at all of 5.8pc, but a delicious beer worth the additional inebriation.

However, the décor certainly has seen better days, and you will find a classier JDW option about 7 minutes away, at The Standing Order. Of course, the menu (with very minor variations) and drjnks selection is the usual, and the prices are highly competitive - you simply won't find a cheaper cocktail or real ale than anywhere else but at a Spoon. However, a real ale I had when I visited in February had already gone bad (very notable vinegary smell and taste).. That shouldn't happen - casks of real ale once opened wiil start to go bad after 3 days. The food is solid if unexciting, which you've also come to expect from JDW. All in all, not the best JDW option in Derby.

The staff are all lovely and even when busy they will share a laugh and a joke. If going for a meal I love to sit in the booths at the back as it is more private and away from the hubbub of the rst of the pub. If going for an evening with the girls or just a quick coffee I love to sit on the comfy sofas at the front of the bar. Only thing against this is that it is nearer the doors and with people going in and out to smoke, can get a bit draughty. The food is great and still very cheap even in this climate. The beer and wine is also cheap compared to most pubs and the coffee is delicious. I love all the great pictures on the wall of historic Derby and the Bookcase full of dusty old books at the back of the bar gives it great character. The only negative I have is that the toilets are all a hike up the stairs - but this seems to be an issue with most Wetherspoon pubs.

It's REALLY nice inside!…read more I remember it from years back and have watched it's decline over the years culminating in the abuse heaped on it by whichever pub chain it was who last owned it- I can't remember! Anyway they painted it white and there was a huge outcry! Had lunch there today and it was very pleasant. Good service; my choice was unavailable so they offered me a free drink which was lovely! I didn't take it bit was nice to have the offer! Many places could learn from this! So while I would probably avoind it on cricket/football days, I can highly reccomend it as a place to eat or drink. xx

Wetherspoon pubs in Derby (another one, The…read moreThomas Leaper, is right next door - which is kind of peculiar), housed in a former bank - indeed several Spoons called The Standing Order are in former bank buildings, like the one in Edinburgh). The décor is more stylish than the one you will find in other Spoons, though still easily recognizable. The food of course is the same that you will find in other JDW pubs, with very minor variations (e.g. the selection of small plates is smaller here than e.g at The Babington Arms, also in Derby). The drinks selection is huge and the prices competitive (try and find a real ale from UKP 2,75 at any pub that isn't a Spoon!), and that of course attracts a certain clientèle, especially on weekend nights. If you can accept that, it's a highly recommendable place for inexpensive drinks and (usually reliable) food.

Now it is pitched at the older crowd as it offers many choices for bitters and out of the ordinary lagers can also be had. It also has that olb pub feel to it, or at least tries to create that feel and that is where I think it struggles. There is a mis match of what is in there. Rough wooden floors and beer barrel tables give out one signal, but then a smart little conservatory added on give it another. I can never decide whether it is a temporary building or a proper pub. It has that kind of cross between a local and having a drink in the Scout Hut. Despite my reservations on whether or not the feel is right inside, it is very popular and as with any pub as long as the people in there are having a good time then it makes it a good place to be. People seem to like it and I can be persuaded.

I had a half portion of the fish and chips and it was the perfect size. The breading was not too greasy yet light and didn't fall apart. I most enjoyed their homemade tartar sauce. The whole meal went perfect with my cordial (non-alcoholic spritzer, essentially). Our waiter was doing double duty by handling food and bar orders, and he was great. If in Derby again, I would visit again!

Only when there was no-one else she could possibly find to serve did we finally get our hands on a beverage and it was a good one, Hop till you drop. A second beer was acquired much quicker but was the not quite so good Triple Hop. I know I prefer their other pub, though this one is quite nice so maybe the dreadful service has just irked me too much.
