Stopped in on our way home to Arkansas. Grabbed two Mochas, White Fang, matcha, breakfast sandwich and a blueberry muffin. We come from an area where Onyx coffee reigns and is ranked number one in the nation but I say Common Grounds mocha beat Onyx hands down! If Common Grounds would sprinkle some black salt on top of their mocha it would be amazing! The young lady behind the counter greeted us and even carried on small talk asking us about our trip. No negative things to say what-so-ever. This out of towner grabbed coffee here each morning the past four mornings prior to my seminars on campus. I'm a huge fan of locally owned coffee shops; I'd rather go local than to some of these big chains ANY DAY. The fact that the owners are Baylor grads and have an admirable mission statement and purpose refreshes the soul. The quaint little antiquey house meets cabin in the woods atmosphere is probably the best I've experienced in a coffee shop. Walking inside almost feels like you've walked into a tree itself - a tree complete with plenty of eclectic seating options. If I had more time to "just hang out" - I'd be parked in here. I've had multiple lattes - with and without their "secret sauce" - which is good, but quickly becomes overly sweet (and I'm a lover of sweets). This morning I opted for "light secret sauce", and found that the perfect balance. Can't say enough about the staff. Each morning I've been met with positive, friendly vibes, recommendations, and fast service. I'm looking forward to a few more mornings starting with Common Grounds. So this is the most cool little eclectic spot in town! I really love that about this coffee shop. The cowboy drink is great! I also love the peach ice tea with lemonade. I'm sorry I forgot the name of that drink. But it was delicious! The employees are some of the most kind and they're helpful with me because I'm deaf. They try to accommodate me & be accessible. Love this coffee shop. There's something about coffee shops that feel like a cozy cabin. This place has lots of personality, and you can tell that a lot of the Baylor students come here to study. What I like about this shop is that it has multiple uses. A place to hangout, study, and even listen to music. They have a stage area in the back with lots of seating. They also have an indoor/outdoor section in the coffee shop. The coffee here is amazing! What makes them different from other coffee places, is that they have a Cowboy Menu in which the drinks there get mixed with a "secret sauce" that you can also purchase. I recently moved across town so I started going to the Common Grounds on Franklin instead of the one on hwy 84. The past several times it has been EXTREMELY mediocre at best, plain bad at worst. This morning was my final straw. I got a frozen cappuccino and it was poorly blended and just tasted like straight foamy milk. No flavor of coffee, no flavor from the sauce. Nasty. Double 5 stars for Common Grounds, which may be my favorite coffee shop anywhere. It's quirky, eclectic, non-gourmet, and serves the Baylor campus with ample indoor and outdoor seating and a music venue in the back. And, I've been coming here with some regularity since being introduced to it in 2006 or so. If only there was a Common Grounds at every college campus. Other coffee shops may have higher-brow blends, But, Common Grounds makes up for it's carb-heavy coffee menu with character. Their featured drink is something called "Cowboy Coffee" including an undisclosed "secret sauce" and is quite good. Oddly, nothing else about this place says Texas. It's more like a set from a 90's bohemian movie. The building appears to be a former house, built on pier and beam and lacking a strong commitment to right angles. To one side, a breezeway filled with couches and tables provides comfortable outdoor seating, no small feat in Waco, TX. The back area is more of a large yard with a stage on the far end. Whenever we pass through Waco we make a stop here, it's mandatory. On our last, the outside appeared to be ready for another coat of paint and a power wash. But, I didn't care. If you're driving through on I-35, ditch the fast food and make a stop at Common Grounds! read more

I love getting coffee here when I'm in the Waco area. This last time, I experienced their drive thru for the first time. It was raining, so I think that's what caused service to be pretty slow. No worries though, I wasn't in any hurry. I ordered off their "sleep is overrated" menu since I was about to drive back to Houston and the drink my barista suggested was BOMB! During my time at Baylor University, Common Grounds was my go-to spot. For you first-timers, you can't go wrong with a classic cowboy coffee with its secret sauce. When my wife and I traveled to Waco for our summer vacation, I needed to find a coffee place. This place rated high and I decided to give it a try. First off, I like how the decor of this establishment is and the baristas were all nice and very friendly. I believe I opted for their Cowboy Coffee and it was very good. Their secret sauce was different, but in a good way. I thoroughly enjoyed my coffee experience with them, and as I ventured through my week exploring more coffee places in the Waco area, I found myself coming back to Common Grounds for more. In fact, I even bought a bag of their beans and was able to enjoy their coffee when my trip was over. I would have bought their secret sauce as well, but I was flying and didn't want anything to break. Now that I am living in the area, I will definitely need to find time to venture back out and get more of their coffee and a jar of their secret sauce. read more

Not a great experience, last time I went. I have been to this local coffee shop several times, and given them my money. The most recent time I decided to go, I just did their drive-thru line, since parking here is always hard to come by. I was behind a couple of cars and just waiting my turn. Eventually the barista who was taking care of the car in front of me popped her head back in the window, and disappeared. I pulled up to the window and waited a few minutes. No one ever opened the window to take my order. I finally decided to just hit the little doorbell button, to get their attention. More minutes go by. Finally a barista opened the window to take my order. By her body language, she acted put off by having to take my order. Like, if you don't want to be working there, and serving customers, maybe you need to just quit your job? She took my order and told me to pull ahead to the next window, which I understood. I pulled forward after the customer ahead of me drove off, and sat at that window for maybe ten mins. How long does it take to make a cup of coffee? I'm confident I would have gotten that coffee sooner if I had managed to find parking and walked in and ordered inside. Belatedly, they took my payment and gave me my coffee. It was like if you're not a cute little college student, they don't want to serve you or even be bothered by you, as their customer. Eh. Disappointing experience overall. This is definitely a coffee place to hang out and talk, not so much study. If you can sit outside it's not bad but the seating inside and on the patio isn't very conducive to getting work done as the there aren't many tables and the chair a make for sitting back, not leaning forward. Outside seating is just tables like you'd find at an outdoor park. They are good to sit and talk at, as well as work. You just have to hope people aren't being to loud around you. The coffee here is very solid and good. It's usually just college aged people working who get out your coffee fast so no worries there. So, where in the hell was Common Grounds when I was in college?! If there had been a spot like Common Grounds in California, I would have happily ditched any and all Starbucks locations in a heartbeat. Shayla does NOT... like coffee. But the smell of their roasted coffee grounds is ironically what made me go inside. I felt like one of those cartoon characters that float in the air while they follow a smell. Well I followed the smell of the coffee right into their adorable little coffee shop. So, you know I have to say it; this place is "Sooo stinkin' CUTE!". So urban and so hipster with such a mellow atmosphere. From the bright green paint to the rustic interior, this place just exudes edginess! When you walk in, you'll see the ordering counter along with a wall of souvenirs and store memorabilia. There's a room with sofas and high tables and then another adjoining room to your left with comfy couches. I was super impressed with their back patio! There's tons of space and even a little stage where people perform live music. There are benches and bulbs lights strung in the air, and an adorable outside deck! It's the perfect hangout spot! Perfect for studying or just for meeting up with friends. I didn't try their coffee but they carry a variety of different styles! Drip coffee, espressos, lattes, mochas, macchiatos, iced, you name it and they probably have it. They also have fun seasonal menus and house specialty drinks that include some great options for non-coffee drinkers such as myself! Which brings me too... their wonderfully refreshing Hotel California drink! It was pretty warm out when I came and I was looking for something that would cool me down. Ended up ordering a Hotel California house specialty (Italian soda, coconut, like, and vanilla syrup) and I super enjoyed it! Loved how light and refreshing it was! It's definitely something that I would order again and again if I lived near by. I love trying different coffee spots when I travel to different cities. Common Grounds seem to be the place that was happening at the moment and a group of friends and I checked it out while visiting Waco. I was debating between a Meltdown and the No Bull. I wasn't sure between the two because I wanted something with espresso which the meltdown had 4 shots of and a frozen cappuccino in it but the No Bull had espresso, half and half, and the secret sauce I wanted to try. Decided to go with the No Bull but asked with less half and half because I wanted more of an espresso taste to the drink but still a sweetness to it. He then recommended the Pig Swig frozen. I was like ok. Not so much of a good recommendation because I didn't want to taste too much of a cream/sweet taste to it which the Pig swig had. It was alright but not 4.93 for a small alright. I didn't really taste the espresso in the drink and was disappointed in that. The atmosphere was good for college students who want to study or people who just want a nice area to read. It was kind of unattractive to see old beat up sofa chairs outside. Side note: My friend ordered a Milky Way and they couldn't make that drink for her cause they ran out of caramel and offered to make her something else. I don't get why this wasn't addressed before paying for it. Also shouldn't they have made a sign saying it was ran out after they told her that? We didn't realize til later how do we know the drink they supplemented for the Milky way costed the same cause there weren't any prices that visible to the naked eye.
