I'm in science and work with a lot of data, but admittedly, I've not always been the best about transferring files from my flash drive onto more permanent storage. Years ago, I inserted my trusty (or so I thought) flash drive into my laptop, and I couldn't access any of the data! After panicking a bit, I took my flash drive to the IT folks at Penn engineering, but was told that they couldn't help me and data recovery services are pretty expensive (easily $300 and up). My best bet was to reach out to Comp Recovery and was told something like "he's good." My transaction with Sory of Comp Recovery was easy. Sory came to campus to pick up my flash drive, took a few days to work his magic, and sent me a screenshot of my "lost" (but now found!) files. He was even willing to work with me on the pricing, given that I was a poor postdoc at the time. Soon after, we met again on a street corner of campus - Sory rolled up in his car, we quickly exchanged cash for data, and he rolled on out. After typing this, I realize how sketchy this transaction might sound, but I assure you that Comp Recovery is a legitimate business! Since then, I've gone to Sory once more for a broken flash drive and very recently recommended him to my wedding videographer who negligently and stupidly lost a large chunk of our wedding footage (Agh! *That* story is for another yelp review). Sadly, Sory wasn't able to recover those lost files, but I trust that he left no stone unturned. Keep in mind that Comp Recovery doesn't work miracles. In addition, Sory is just a downright nice guy. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone, EVER. I called them and told them about my broken hard drive. I filled out a form and they said they would be able to give me a free estimate for the repairs. They even came to my apartment and picked it up, so it was super convenient. Two weeks later, I get a call saying that it would be a couple hundred dollars for repairs, but they couldn't guarantee that they could fix it. Considering that I am a student living off my loans, I couldn't take few hundred dollars of a gamble. So I told them to just give me back the hard drive until I was able to figure out a solution. After they got mad at me for not using their service, they finally said they would drop it off. A month later, still no hard drive. I called and they said they would find it and drop it off. Another month later, still no hard drive, and they said they would call me back. In the end, I never got back my hard drive. It had family pictures, videos, and all of my work throughout college. I really wanted to get this hard drive fixed once I was able to find a way to pay for it or find someone who could guarantee a repair. Instead, comprecovery got mad at me for not being able to afford their service and never gave me back my hard drive. Disappointed, angry, frustrated.. nothing could even being to describe how I felt and still feel about this whole situation. read more

I would never recommend this company to anyone. Do not be fooled by their free evaluation service. They said they will pick up the hard drive and do a free evalution. And until both parties agree on a price they will proceed to extract the data. Totally a lie! They texted me that the fee will be 900 dollars which I can not afford. So I said I want my hard drive back. But it turns out they extracted my data without my permission abd insist that I have to 500 dollars regardless. We have never reached the agreement that I am okay to pay that much to recover the data. And they threaten you that they will destroy your data on the hard drive. They never specify the amount of 500 dollars upfront until you want to stop the process with them. So never be fooled by their free evaluation service. It Is NOT FREE AT ALL read more

As one can imagine, losing all of your not properly backed up data can induce panic. So, I did what anyone would do and asked my entire subdivision (via Facebook) who to turn to. A neighbor, who I have never met, encouraged me to contact his friend Sory, at Comprecovery. I was a bit hesitant at first given the mismatch of the promise to recover my data (97% success rate or something like that) and the not so great reviews here on Yelp; however, after another company (recommended by the reputable store where I purchased my laptop) said my hard drive was a goner and nothing could be done, I figured I had nothing to lose (with a promise of "no data, no charge"). My only other alternative was to ship my hard drive off to some place in California recommended by the Genius at the Apple Store. They went out of their way to pick up my hard drive, to expedite the recovery, and to reassure me that hard drives that are considered to be "a lost cause" are a favorite! They stayed in touch throughout the process keeping me up to date on his progress. And, to my delight, were able to recovery EVERYTHING! I mean, EVERYTHING! At times I second guessed myself - this is too good to be true -- but they delivered as promised. The pricing for the job was beyond fair, recognizing that data recovery can be very expensive. They were upfront about the variables that could drive up the cost when they took the hard drive. If you want to avoid the cost of this kind of service, back up your data. If you aren't sure you're going to be willing to spend the money, you might not want to even go down this path as most of the work is done before a proper estimate can be given. I would strongly recommend anyone who needs data recovery for Comprecovery. He really went out of his way to accomodate my needs. My drive had damage because of a fall and he was able to replace parts in my drive and also create a back-up of my data. This wasn't an easy task because I was trying to restore my computer back-up to my mac and at first it didn't work but honestly this guy was up to the wee hours of the morning working on my case and actually did the migration of my data to my laptop. One of the main reasons why I chose him is because they are in Philadelphia and they don't send out your drive somewhere else for the recovery. It is all done there in the Philadelphia office. He has a clean room equipment and has been this for a long time. Obviously this is important data if you are looking to recover. This guy really cares about doing a good job. I wish I read Kay D's review before I called this company. Like her, I was fooled by the "Free Estimate" they claim. It's not really free because if you decide you don't want their service, they will not give you your hard drive back. They quoted me $950 for a few photos and 2 word documents! They tell you that you have to pay them in order to get your hard drive back. I took the contract I signed to a lawyer and he told me it's written very sneakily and it sounds like it's a free estimate but it's not really. Only a lawyer would see between the lines in the sneaky written words. He told me I could take him to small claims court but would likely lose. I talked him down to $400 and found a way to scrounge it up to get my stuff back. DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS COMPANY!! THEY ARE A RIP OFF!!!! read more

I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy. Go to Bundy's! I partly blame myself for the experience, because if I had looked them up through the Better Business Bureau, I would have seen that they have a "F" rating with three complaints filed against them. One which is still unresolved. My experience goes this way. I was lured in by their website which at the time had a lower rate for the hardware that I needed recovery from. When I called them on it, they told me that my hardware was not from that category, but that they would do it anyway for the price listed on their website. When I get to their office, I fill out a standard permission form, which basically states that once they diagnose and recover your information, you accept your obligation to pay. No where on that document, does it say, you have seven days from their recovery to pay in full before they delete all your information. The only mention of a timeline is 30 days, where they will keep your property for that length of time before they destroy it. The day after I dropped my hardware off for recovery, I get an email from them saying that they were able to recover the information and I had seven days to pay or they would delete everything. They also added another $65 to the charge and had required me to purchase additional hardware. This was all understandable but unexpected, and I was willing to pay the majority to keep my account in good standing. However, I was told that they would only do the amount in full or destroy my information in 7 days, which financially I could not do. When I tried to speak with the owner, who was very condescending (maybe because I was a woman), he began raising his voice and became very confrontational. At the end, nothing was resolved, and I basically had to turn my world upside down so that these people would not destroy my information. Yes, I could have taken my hard drive to another recovery service after, but you risk more data loss with each handler, and I could not take that risk (and they monetize off that fear). The story does not end there. They give you a 30 day warranty period. When I brought my new drive home with my recovered information, I was able to see all my files and I was happy with that. However, I did not attempt to back-up anything on my Mac computer within that 30 day period. When I tried to back-up, the hard drive was locked. What I found, through calling the hard drive manufacturers and Apple, was that Comp Recovery formatted my hard drive for a PC only, so I was unable back-up to that drive. I emailed them my issue, and as a matter of customer service and their knowing upon my intake that I was working with a MAC computer, I felt that they should in good conscience, correct the situation. I was informed via email, that they would never make that kind of mistake and that it must have happened in my care. Yes, I with no access to a PC computer somehow managed to format my hard drive to PC?!? Incredible. When I called to speak with the owner, he again became confrontational and refused to fix the issue. He then said that if he did it, he would have to charge. So again, I would have to pay for his mistake, because I did not catch it in 30 days. How about fixing it because it is the right thing to do and because customer service is essential to developing new business and keeping current business? This infuriated me to the point where I threatened to file a BBB claim and to let other potential customers know about how they do business through sites like this. I then, hung up the phone. Seconds later, I get a call back from the owner. When I did not pick up, because I was so distraught from the experience, he emailed me saying that he would correct the problem. I am in the process of fixing the issue myself, and made the choice not to accept his service for my silence. He had the opportunity to correct the problem before being threatened and refused. Awful! Awful! Like everyone on here said, they LIE to you about a free estimate. He told me my estimate - $800 - and I told him I couldn't afford it and that I would come and get my hard drive. He then REFUSED to give it back to me, saying that if I wanted it I had to pay $800 for it. Apparently with their "free estimate," it means that if you don't like the price, you're not allowed to have it back. After several arguments with this guy, he finally agreed to $300 and I paid him that just to get my hard drive back. Do NOT NOT NOT ever go to these crooks!
