My favorite night is late Saturday nights, they usually play some excellent hip hop if you catch it at the right time. By "nomally wouldn't hear", I'm not talking about an obscure noise/basement medley/karaoke cover/whatever-else-obscure 24/7 (though maybe sometimes) fest. For instance, just giving it a listen randomly, they were going over some local events (big kid kickball!) inbetween Kraftwerk and Jean Grae. Currently, my good friend Dustin does Freeform on Thursday nights. He knows a lot about music and is a local musician. I've learned a lot about local music and much more through him, and thanks to him I've opened my scope to being more than a hip hop head. Once, he created an entire playlist for me on my birthday -- one of the coolest birthday gifts, ever. I've also taken a walk through the station itself. It's a great place adorned with decades of history on the walls -- Post-Its, scribbin', photos -- along with a well-loved couch and tech stuff like turntables, cassette decks, reel to reels, amps. Those walls are totally made to house sound. If you're curious about a certain DJ, they playlists are posted online. It seems that the students as a journalists lack the wisdom of age, frequently jumping on some "passing trend" train to get name. IT appears there is not a guiding principle for the paper, and merely a stitched fabric of opinionated students that are vying for attention. I will stick to the Nation and Atlantic to get in depth views even though they may not deal with my "hood" issues. But otherwise good learning ground how to write, ... just keep it within its own boundaries so you do not confuse people around you. J.T.

I am doing some documentary work for a nonprofit and will be taking classes here so I will be able to learn how to film, produce and edit film productions with the nonprofit I'm working with and have the programs I produce seen on the community television network once every three months. This is a great to come to work, learn and grow. It also offers classes to those who are members of the Ann Arbor community to do the same thing. The people that work here are very kind and generous and I'd recommend it to any of the active members of the Ann Arbor community and those working in the nonprofit arena.

After moving to Michigan one of my friends told me about the Community Television Network and their free workshops to Ann Arbor residents and non-profits. They require you to take a preview workshop (which is offered every few months) after which they let you take any other workshops. After completing the iMovie workshop I was certified to use editing rooms. The staff was incredibly friendly especially Alysha and I learned alot about the basics of iMovie editing. In the future I plan on taking the JVC Remote Camera and Final Cut Pro x editing class so I can film and edit my own Hi-Def shows. I recommend CTN to all Ann Arbor residents who are interested in getting started with filming, editing, and all aspects of digital media.

This mag is THE source for what to do, where to…read moreeat, and where to catch local bands in Washtenaw County, and it's widely available for free in libraries, coffee shops and other local businesses. One highlight is their annual "best of" issue, where they let readers nominate best restaurants, arts and entertainment venues and more. Each section is broken down further into a variety of categories. For instance, you can make nominations for "Best Cheap Eats" or "Best Middle Eastern Restaurant" for the "Food and Drink" section. They also put out an exhaustive local music directory each November in addition to their brief monthly listings. The magazine carries a mix of eclectic local columns about books, music and culture each month as well as calendars of things to do in the area for that month. I also have a soft spot in my heart for Current because of their annual Fiction and Poetry contest, showcasing local writing talent. Full disclosure, I won a third prize in the fiction category one year and first place in poetry another year. They have a nice ceremony with food and door prizes for the winners and their friends and family, too.

Worst customer service on the planet!…read more A car took out our mailboxes and the neighbors newspaper box . We've been trying for six weeks to get this thing fixed and now the Flint journal is telling us they do not service their own boxes. I spoke to the customer service agent and his supervisor Manuel, who both stated they could send us a pole in a box, but we would have to install it ourselves at our own cost. I advised the neighbor is elderly and cannot physically install a box and a pole. Both of these guys told me too bad and if there's nothing else we can do for you have a great day! My advice don't use Mlive or the Flint journal as they absolutely do not care about their customers. Which leads me to believe all they care about is money. They just lost another customer !
