This is an amazing store to buy either huge volumes or exactly what you need of soil amendments, cover crops, fertilizer, etc. They also have a small selection of tools, seed starting trays, books, and everything a gardener could need. Hard place to find but it is in the Gramark Business Park. That is East of Bob's Red mill retail and then a bit North back always. Literally tons of anything and everything you would want for gardening organic or non. This is the place for variety and moderate sized bags to huge bails. I came by to look at worm castings at a better price then my typical retailer and left with a bag for much cheaper. I've been a customer of Concentrates since they were in inner SE Portland, and have always loved this store. Since they moved to Milwaukie, I found myself going there less often-and after today, that will change-to FAR more often! Money is tight, as it is for everyone, and we have what amounts to a small farm with chickens and over 1000 sq ft of garden. While they garden saves us money, it takes money to keep it going strong, and Concentrates has all the amendments, fertilizers, and seeds I needed for a significant savings over the farm stores in Portland. AND they sell broken bags of various materials for next to nothing! Also they sell the chicken feed we use, at a lower price than I usually pay, and that was on sale today too! I was able to purchase 50# of oyster shell meal for less than $10, I've been buying it for $5/ 5# bag. Ridiculous! They sell bulk apple cider vinegar, another necessity of poultry life, as well as chicken treats for about 20% less than the Portland stores. I had many things on my list, and wound up discovering that if one spends more than $200, there is a 10% discount! I saved another $25 on top of all the other great deals and prices! They can be tricky to locate, call for directions if it's your first visit. read more

Concentrates is in Clackamas Cty between I-205 & Milwaukie is the retail outlet. It's hidden behind other businesses along International Way. Easier to identify is that it's down the street from Bob's Red Mill Restaurant. The staff at Concentrates is excellent!!! Staff is friendly, helpful and usually quite knowledgeable about gardening. It's my go to place for natural fertilizers, soil amendments and mulch. Their blocks of coco coir are reasonably priced and have saved us time and money by reducing the need to water. Seasonally they sell organic veggies starts. They always do the lifting and bring everything to my car and load it! I never have to ask for help as they seem delighted to be of service! I'm always on the lookout for pro spots that sell special items to the general public for cheap. Bonus for good customer service and providing advice. I came across Concentrates because they promote urban chickens. The front counter person, Heather, has even written a pamphlet about it. They have more soil amendments than I knew existed: crushed oyster shells, rice hulls, organic fertilzer in dozens of varieties, non-organic fertilizers - as many, chicken feed. Very helpful in Portland's hard pan clays that otherwise excel in growing weeds. You can get an idea from the retail product list on their web site. They are a wholesale-retail spot for pros - like you! So you make your order and a guy brings it on a forklift and loads it into your car, or preferably a high horsepower biodiesel two ton pickup! Great store, lots of good amendments and feed and growing mix components are the best price anywhere. It's pretty convenient to southeast Portland. It's cool that they have loose amendments and feed supplements and cover crop seeds so you can buy only what you need when you don't need an entire sack. Employees have always been friendly, and usually are knowledgeable. The one time I would have wished they were more knowledgeable was when I was buying waterfowl feed and they couldn't tell me anything about how to use it for baby waterfowl so they wouldn't choke (I ended up making it into a slurry) or whether additional vitamin supplementation was necessary to raise healthy waterfowl. For instance I got: -A box of 4lb Black Gold organic fertilizer and -2 cu ft (56.6 L) Black Gold waterhold cocoblend potting soil (OG) That's what I mean by small They've specialized in organic agriculture since 1938. Here's the website list of some of the stuff they carry: soil amendments, meals, fertilizer, compost, livestock feeds, supplements, chicken supplies, pet foods, and a wide variety of salts. They aren't the type of place you buy a trowel. They are very helpful. I will warn you, it's intimidating when you first go because it's a warehouse, but there's a little office to the right of the parking lot. You don't have to know much. Just go, talk to the person behind the counter and they will help you out. If you don't know specifically what you want, they are more than happy to help you. They had great recommendations for me. You tell the woman/man your order, he/she writes it on a paper, than you take it to the (usually) dude who's loading stuff and he will load it in your car for you. The minus one star is for this whole transaction. It wasn't explained well and there was some wait time, but I just stood outside my car with my book and read while I waited. Google Maps kept telling me I'd arrived at my destination, but I couldn't find it! Concentrates is hidden up the drive behind the commercial building along the street. Head back and park inside the gated area to the far right. It might seem like it's not a parking area, but it is! They had an interested selection of herbs and other starts (feverfew, yarrow, aponia, etc). I was here for supplies for my hens, but being an avid gardener I *had* to check out their gardening supplies. They have a thorough stock of large bags of coco fiber, pumice, peat, 4-way-mix and a number of organic garden and potting soils. As far as their chicken feed and supplies are concerned, I was impressed by their selection, and even more impressed by their prices. I picked up 5 grain scratch, gran-it's grit, payback organic feed, and oyster shell (all 50# bags) for $62! Wow! The young woman running the register was extremely helpful and friendly, and when I remarked how happy I was with their selection and pricing she told me to let her know if I found lower prices anywhere else. The bulk of their business is wholesale and you can definitely feel that, but their public store is fantastic. They aren't allowed to advertise to the public due to regulations in their lease with the business park, but the public is definitely welcome! read more

Been going there faithfully since they relocated to the Milwaukie light industrial park area. Always found the organic feed and and plant nutrients to be good quality at a fair price. The two young men working the retail side were curious and always more then helpful. They actually looked up information if they didn't know the answers to my questions. Lately there has been an older woman working there that is less then curious and always chatting with the other workers but seems very short in temperament when customers have a question or when I needed help loading feed. I dislike going in there because I don't like being around this person. What happened to the younger guys that worked there? read more

I'm not an organic farmer or a gardener (yet), but we do have animals - housecats, to be precise. Concentrates has been our connection to great value on our shrinking budget for some time now. We get most of our cat food (Sportmix is a good brand that nourishes the kitties and goes a long way) and Kozy Kitty litter is a good basic clumping litter that doesn't break the bank. It may strike you as odd to go to an Ag vendor for household products but Concentrates has What You Need™ at a good value. At least give them a try. If you go, say "hi" to Tiny, and see if you can't be introduced to Selene, the cat. She's a sweetie! I love Concentrates Inc. I've been a customer since they were right by the railroad tracks just south of Division, before they were in the red and white building down the street. I loath their new location in Milwaukie, it's a 17 mile drive from my home in NE, and I will never understand why they didn't move to NE near the 205 bridge, for all that Clark county business. I wish they put their current inventory on their website, because 17 miles is a long way to drive to see if they have something in stock, for I often go there early and can't call first. Yet, I love Concentrates so much, that I still gave them 5 stars, despite their location. The reason I will put up with the cost, time, and hassle of the trek down to Milwaukie is because Concentrates is the best place to get soil amendments and animal feed. They mostly sell wholesale, and they give the same prices to the public. I have a large garden and chickens, so I visit about once a month for feed and scratch, plus what ever else I need. They have a huge selection of amendments for the garden all in 50# bags, plus a good selection in bulk if you don't need a full bag. I love that there is a selection of organic chicken feeds and scratch, my hens get so excited when I open a new bag. read more

I have been going to this place for years. UNQUESTIONABLY the best value in fertilizers, soil amendments, and mixes, etc around. I talked with the head honcho a few years back and he said a major company "cut him off" because they were apparently getting complaints from retailers that Consentrates was selling their fertilizers for below what they could buy them for! That should give you some idea of the good values at this place. Generally, you will save the most by buying in quantity (50 lb bags line the warehouse), but there are smaller quantities as well. "broken bag" specials too. Look no further for a better deal unless you need to buy by the pallet-load. read more

The online price sheet is really useful, especially if like me you're the kind of gardener that likes to spend January making spreadsheets of all your plans. Great selection of garden amendments, many are available in bulk so you don't have to buy a 25-40 pound bag if you don't need to. They sell organic fertilizer but you can make your own custom blend and save a little bit per pound over the prepackaged options. They have a small seed rack and various small animal feeds. Check out the online price list/ inventory sheet. I love this! It is great to be able to plan out your shopping from home and have an idea what it will cost. They now carry a line of heavy duty hoes, I bought a couple for Father's Day, they seem to be good quality and effective. The staff seems knowledgable, and they are eager to answer questions. I've only been in a few times so I can't really gauge how good their advice is yet. That's why I'm holding back a star. I have purchased sodium bicarbonate and Organic compost on two separate occasions from this store and I am very happy with the prices and the product. The last time I was there someone volunteered to help me load my car and as a woman who just had a c-section this kind of customer service was much appreciated. However, there is one woman that works there that can make going to Concentrates a very unpleasant experience. I'm not sure if she feels threatened by other women or she is just plain rude but they need to fire her immediately. She barely looked up from her computer when I went to purchase my compost this morning and scoffed at the idea that I needed help loading 75lbs of product into my car. It was a much different experience when I had been there an hour earlier working with someone very pleasant named Shannon. Do not confuse these two people. Shannon is wonderful. I went to a talk that Heather gave, and it was great. She is friendly and knowledgeable. I later went to Concentrates to follow up on her recommendations about amending soil. She wasn't there, but the workers that were there acted like they were too cool to talk to me. I think I ended up getting what I needed, but I left knowing I'd keep going back to Portland Nursery, one of the 7 Dees, or Garden Fever. I can't speak to the deals that other reviewers mention, mostly because how often do you need to buy a 50 lb bag of cottonseed meal? Saving a couple of dollars isn't worth the drive to the middle of nowhere. read more
