This is not the sketchy pipeño that is normally sold in Santiago, this pipeño comes straight from the "campo" - non-distilled, sweet deliciousness. For those who still don't quite get it, it is Chile's version of moon shine, but at Las Pipas they have the best selection. Las Pipas sells both white and red pipeño and is the center of attention during Chile's independence day in Santiago. White Pipeño is most commonly used in Chile's traditional drink (mostly drunk during independence day) the Terremoto. During the Vendimia and the independence day this shop is packed, but on a regular day you can come in and get what you need without waiting too long -- I suggest coming in the evenings. Tip: Ask to try before you by...they will give you a mini taste test! A must during the "fiestas patrias", just remember the pipeño jugs are huge! (like Pirates of the Caribbean style)

We did the historical tour plus tasting, and they served 4 of their signature wines. All super smooth, delicious. They sell most of their production internally to Chile. Their wine is fantastic: dry but smooth. I highly recommend the tour as well, you get to learn about the property, all the owners and how it got to what it is today. The guide, Felipe, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He was able to answer all of our questions, and made us feel very welcomed. We did the "premium" tour, which is a basic one, but there are many options and levels you can choose from. We were able to try three different varieties, and ultimately bought some bottles at a discounted rate. The food in the little restaurant was very good. We just did a tapas style snack with a cheese plate, the melted cheese, and a bottle of wine. The staff in the bar area was very friendly as well. We did not have a car, so we used public transport to get back to the metro station. IT was easy, but if you are unfamiliar with the area, it could be a bit of a daunting task. Overall, I would happily do this experience again if I find myself in the Santiago area.

Wines: I loved the Sauvignon Gris, which I'd never tried before. It tasted like a crisper and even less sweet Sauv. Blanc. I really enjoyed the Chardonnay, which is unusual for me. I found the Syrah to be very good. But my favorite was the Lota red blend, which I had an opportunity to try in their wine bar, and absolutely worth the ~$15 for a glass (the bottles retail for about $80). Facilities: With that 150 years of history, there are buildings here that have survived from day one, severe Chilean earthquakes notwithstanding. The wines aren't aged in the original cellars anymore due to a mold that's taken hold in them, but because of Chile's antiquities laws, all of the original fermentation vessels remain, as well as endless rows of barrels down in the dungeons. There's an impressive combination of the new (modern PLC-controlled stainless steel processing equipment) on grounds hosting some 80+ year old vines that are still watered by redirected streams from the Andes. The People: Our guide Adriane was very informative and gave the tour in a Spanish that I could completely understand (the Chilean dialect can be difficult to those of us so used to the Mexican variety). The wine bar staff were very helpful in answering additional questions, and of course, providing that lovely, decanted Lota red. Getting There: An easy 30 min Metro ride from greater central Santiago, followed by a ~$5 cab ride, which is even cheaper if you get off at the right stop. And for leaving, an employee was giving ~$1.50 rides back to the Metro in her Chrysler minivan.

The sommelier that took care of us (Lorena) was very knowledgeable and gave us a great amount of information about the wines, regions and history on Chilean vineyards. I always know when I walk in that one of their employees will be able to help me pick out something perfect for whatever the occasion. The store is open later too so no need to dash over after work.
