When I think about '55-- My paternal great-grandfather worked here then, living his humble grocer's life, a Chinese liaison bridging Black and White tensions, lending to his Black customers until they could get paid from the cotton work. It was a rotten, hard filled with racism. And now it's the interpretive center. The space was rather large, clean, sparse. The photos and his grocery sign and all of the sad memory that is commemorated here-- set and opened with the intention of starting dialogue of racial reconciliation. It was one of the most sobering moments of my life. The kind young man working here told me that my jin was very good to him and his family as he grew up, and he told me some stories of being a kid and buying snacks here. He let me walk every inch of the place, trying to imagine my relatives living in the rear of their store. I aim to head back for a visit, whenever it is "safe" to.

Because the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin was born here. Aretha Louise Franklin was born March 26, 1942 in Memphis Tennessee. I cannot imagine what it was like back in those times but to see where she came from to what she became in her life is astounding. The dwelling is marked as a Historical Landmark but it is unkempt and not restored. I pray that some group be it her family or her fans find a way to restore it and make it a museum.

It is relatively easy to find, as it is located just across from the Crystal Shrine Grotto. This is one of the more extravagant graves that you will find in the cemetery. The grave is marked by a huge bronze foot stone that has photos of Hayes in different stages of his life and his movies engraved in it. It also has the God's Garden poem inscribed and reads: God looked around his garden And he found an empty place He then looked down upon this earth And found your star He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest God's garden is beautiful now He always takes the best. The interior is furnished with some original and some replica, but all very interesting. They give a quick talk, then you tour on your own. Definitely worth a stop.

They also have trails you can hop on and just explore and enjoy the weather (spring-fall) winter not sure. It's nice to keep history alive regardless of what subject matter it is. Just off a main road Memphis, Tennessee is a bit of history remembered in a plaque. We need to…read moreremember history. It has often been said that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, I truly believe this to be true. The tragic story written on this plaque talked about a lynching of a black Union Army veteran who ran away with a white girl only to be found by 25 masked horseman who promptly lynched him. I find myself stopping when I see a historic plaque. I learned a bit of local history and walk away a more wiser person.

The National Geographic Channel came here and made an episode of Diggers here. They found some old…read morecoins here including a relic coin that was only used locally at the time. It is a Mississippi historic land mark and is part of history around here. As I understand it, share croppers worked all week locally and then came here to "party" sort to speak. They just remodeled the old gas station here and made it look so nice a lawyer or business man moved into part of it.

Glenn was a gracious and warm host. My girlfriend and I felt as though we were part of the family by the way he treated us and showed us around. Do yourself a favor and come check this place out.
