After finding out Aretha Franklin's childhood home was somewhere we could visit, we decided to go!…read more The place needs a proper prayer and better sense of care than what it has become. The queen of soul was born here in Memphis, Tennessee. A woman that was raised here but became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not only did she become a superstar winning Grammy after Grammy. She was a civil rights servant to so many individuals. She used her voice to and fame to keep the civil rights movement going. She performed free concerts and put gas in the vans for people to drive. This is where she came from, now she's watching from Heaven. This special lady, a preachers daughter. She is remembered always for her love and dedication to humankind. When you're in Memphis, Tennessee next time make sure and stop to see this.

This humble home is where the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, first drew breath on March25,1942 Despite being in a rough spot--windows boarded, weeds creeping, and parts collapsing--it still whispers history at every creak You can't go inside, but stepping onto the porch--or as close as allowed--fills you with awe. This is ground zero for gospel that would later shake the world. Aretha herself returned here in 2014 and recalled memories of her father preaching and her family gathering under a backyard tree with nostalgia and fondness The neighborhood, part of historic Soulsville, bears its own scars--decades of neglect and blight. But the house stands at the center of a hopeful revival. Local activists and preservation groups have fought zoning orders and demolition plans, and as recently as mid-2024, efforts to stabilize and restore the site gained traction--especially now that Anasa Troutman owns the property with the intent to honor its legacy in place

It is relatively easy to find, as it is located just across from the Crystal Shrine Grotto. This is one of the more extravagant graves that you will find in the cemetery. The grave is marked by a huge bronze foot stone that has photos of Hayes in different stages of his life and his movies engraved in it. It also has the God's Garden poem inscribed and reads: God looked around his garden And he found an empty place He then looked down upon this earth And found your star He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest God's garden is beautiful now He always takes the best. But when you left. THE BIGGEST PART OF ME LEFT. But thanks for leaving a part of us in KOJO The hardest things always was for you to say goodbye. So I won't either. One day we'll be together again. LOVING YOU WAS THE GREATEST THING I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED YOU'LL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART. My Love, Your wife ADJOWA "MARGARET" HAYES The grave looks pretty awesome and is in great shape. Parking here is very easy. There is parking available right in front of where the plot is located. I know what I want my grave to look like now, when it is my time. Anyway, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. There are many sights to check out in the cemetery including the Crystal Shrine Grotto.
