On a sunny day, I bring my DELE books, order a glass of Albariño, and people-watch from the sidewalk. I'm also a firm believer in the Spanish bar value proposition. When I order a glass of wine, I love to receive some olives or a montadito to snack on. At Planeta, I am presented with a bowl of olives, a full plate of montaditos, and half a tortilla espanola. (Granted, the tortilla is not the best [1], but it's the thought that counts!) For 2.30 euro, I am satiated, relaxed, and leave the bar much better prepared for my exam. There's one waiter in particular who speaks a little bit of English. He speaks to me in English, I speak to him in Spanish. There is only one main course on the á-la-carte menu: the francesinha, a vegetarian/vegan version of a local specialty dish. I've never tried the original dish, but the vegetarian version at Cultura dos Sabores was off the hook delicious. The buffet has a cold section and a hot section. I snuck a taste of the eggplant wrap (filled with plum--yum!!), the seasoned potatoes, and an African kale salad. These were all wonderfully flavorful, reminiscent of vegetarian meals I've had on Buddhist retreats at Spirit Rock in Northern California. Cultura dos Sabores also offers smoothies and desserts. The two fruit smoothies I tried were bursting with flavor and were not overloaded with apple juice, as can frequently happen with European smoothies. The dessert, a creamy pie with a fruity topping, was subtly delicious. My 12-year-old son really liked it, and he's not vegetarian either.

Some days there is a little podium for musicians. There is no tapas menu, so just come here for the drinks! What I like about this square is that you will barely find any strangers (like yourself) and you will be surrounded by locals who go here at night to meet their friends and family. For me a holiday does not get any better, just enjoying these simplicity of normal life: a nice drink, kids laughing, birds chirping, sun on your skin.

The biggest surprise of all was that the espresso cost me 1 euro. The bocadillos were also priced fairly. In such a touristy area, I would have expected much higher prices. Although it is not yet tourist season, I imagine that this bar must be very full once all of the beachgoers arrive. With a spacious patio, there is space for everyone on a sunny day.

We wanted a restaurant/bar that had some people but wasn't packed, so we could still hear ourselves. Theophilu's fit the bill perfectly. They offer a good selection of port wines, but we opted for the 6 port tasting for €20. It's cool because they actually bring the bottles out to your table and pour it into the glass in front of you while telling you what they're pouring. Honestly felt like I was at a winery doing a tasting. Afterwards, they leave the bottle at the table too, so you can reference it if you forget. Our favorites were the Tawny 20 and 30 years, though I enjoyed the white as well. I really enjoyed this experience of trying port in the place where so many port wines are aged.

I'm unsure if this is the norm, as I did see the card readers, or what happened. I recommend to keep walking and find something "inside" town.
