They daven Ashkenazi-Sefard, but it is less chassidish than some of the other nearby shuls. The members of Khilah Marine Park are fantastic. When someone has a baby the community cooks and delivers meals every day for a few weeks. A member sponsors a scholar in residence program for the time between Pesach and Shavous. Past speakers include R' Paysach Krohn and R' Rietti. There is a father and son learning program as well as Shabbos parties for girls. R. Baruch Pesach Mendelson is the rabbi and I believe he has shmicha in eruvim so come visit and a backyard eruv may be in your future.

The main church is almost like an auditorium space and rather circular in some sense. There are plenty of pews to sit at and I've noticed in the past if I arrived before a parishioner who prefers a particular spot that you will get a look. I guess folks get set in their ways. In the back is an enclosed area with windows which was aimed at those with small children or babies. This ensures the crying does not disturb the mass. Depending on the holiday this area can be packed with all sorts of parishioners. I've been known to be in this space since I like to slip out a few minutes earlier than everyone else. The church is clean and comfortable (well as comfortable as wooden pews allow you to be). It is well lit and the speakers allow you to hear even the lowest talking reader or priest.

I guess it's because you can get baptism info in their bulletin and it's something every parishioner should know.. but they don't have a website, so how are outsiders supposed to get the DL? The inside of the church is very lovely (see pictures!). The outside doesn't look like much and the priest mentioned a back courtyard, but sadly I needed to get to Penn Station to go home after the baptism so I didn't get to look around the perimeter. The priest was very nice and I enjoyed his homily. The ceremony was super quick and they didn't even kick us out of the church while we (us + the other family getting their kid baptized) were taking tons of pictures. Some churches are run like "businesses" and make you leave after "services are rendered". The church is literally a minute from the R train and there is that meter parking around there too. Most of the time the no one came up to me and said hello or even cared if I ever came back. The Rabbi's never introduced themselves to me. Beth-El is very different! When I first walked in I was taken with the sun shining in from the beautiful stain glass. The women sit on one side and the men sit on the other. When the Torah came around the Rabbi greeted everyone in both the men and women's section! Women aren't ignored in this shul. He welcomed me and invited me to stay for kiddish. The other members of the shul also said hello and wanted to get to know me. Even though people have been going there for years they aren't cliquish at all. There is a book club, movie club and weekly lessons that are always worth coming to. We have a regular group of people who always have interesting opinions. If you're looking to doven at a shul which has a family feel this is the place. There are young people, older people, a mix of black hats and more modern orthodox. Everyone is respectful of each other. There is a full kiddish meal downstairs and people usually stay and talk for a long time afterward. It didn't take long for me to feel at home here, a matter of weeks actually. Within a year I was asked to join the board.

This is a large building along the eastern parkway which functions as a synagogue. I come with my…read moregirlfriend here every week for Jewish heritage class. We are both extremely interested and involved in exploring more about jewish identity and background. The class located on the third floor and is extremely interesting for an outsider like myself. The building itself is very clean and well-maintained and in many different classes going on a different plus. There's also a synagogue on the second floor but I've never seen it use as we come late in the evening. There is food which is brought during every class, and this is very good for a hungry group like us. It's also interesting to see the portraits of all the previous chairs on the second floor. All in all, I would say that this building is an important part of Jewish tradition and heritage in Brooklyn.
