The Synagogue is a welcoming place for converts. The Synagogue is truly egalitarian. . I like that the services are not noisy. The Congregation is involved with the services. There are classes for children and even babysitting. At the end of services, the Rabbi also says, "Introduce yourself to two people you don't know." These words have made the Synagogue warm and welcoming. The Synagogue is very involved in community activities, such as the Homeless Shelter and newly arrived Syrians, who have escaped from war. The Rabbi does not use the pulpit to spout his political views; he never tells people how to vote. I think he views himself as the Rabbi to the congregation, regardless of politics. At voting time, he sends a prayer for those who choose to use it, a meditation of pondering. I read the reviews referring to Rabbi Naomi Kalisch; she is the Rabbi's wife, not the Rabbi of the Synagogue. These are modern times. A couple is two individuals and should be viewed as such.

They have an amazing preschool, the Kaplan Center for young children (up until kindergarten age) & a Hebrew school program for K-8th grade kids after school. The leadership is great, particularly Rabbi Robert Scheinberg who has led the congregation for many years. High Holy Day services open to all: This year, for the High Holiday services -- which are always…read moreopen to nonmembers, and do not require tickets -- two extra evening services have been added, so there will be 6 pm and 8 pm services for the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you are not a member of a Jewish synagogue, attending Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur services can be a challenge. Some temples are open only to members and others sell tickets to non-members. One congregation, Kolot Chayeinu, which meets in Park Slope, has always welcomed non-members to their services, at no cost, to a great response--standing room only at most services. To accommodate demand this year Kolot has added extra evening services for both High Holy Day evenings, September 28 and October 7th. Kolot welcomes people from across the spectrum of Jewish observance to attend these services. I had my sons Bris here (after a few of my friends and no one had a bad experience except me so basically I was taking advantage of). It started out great, to rent third larger room for my guests to sit and enjoy dinner after the ceremony was about $1400. Once I had already left a deposit I asked to peek into the sacutary before I left. She let me in and then asks if we will be using the room I said of course where else would the ceremoney of the Brit be? She proceeded to tell me that it's a completely separate fee and was acting surprised that I would need to use it. When I asked where most people do the ceremoney she said oh right in the middle of the large room. ( lie). She then proceeded to ask me if i can "give her", I'm assuming she meant for the shul but who knows, an extra I think it was $250. I said yes and because we were running out of time and I had no patience I'm a new mother on no sleep. the day of the bris my caterer went to set up and was stopped when he started to put a bar incase anyone wanted wine or a drink with dinner. The woman called me and told me he can't because SHE would be responsible for the people drinking. I explained to her this was not a wild party and the fully licensed bartender and caterer are well aware of who to serve( people barely drank this was a week night ). She then proceeded to ask me to again give her an extra $400 she said " I think you giving me $400 is fair" again I said ok because it was the day of the event. This woman basically ruined what should have been a wonderful event to plan for my son. 3 of my friends had their sons Brit there and NO one had this experience no one delt with this woman apparently she's a Co-president of the congregation and everyone else delt with the other woman in charge.

BUT I've had so…read moremany wonderful experiences there, with the same sensitive Rabbi, and with many of the same people, that it's like my family away from family . They now have a fabulous Cantor, who's set up a Choir where they stood with him (AMAZING) and sang, then the Cantor invites the members to join in-like the Rabbi, totally without artifice. I've been to Bar Mitzvahs there of my nephews and nieces, I've been to sad services marking my brother's Death and Yartzeit and also for the High Holidays. I find the Sermons to be worthwhile and the sound system is first rate. There are many 'international' members-if that's the word. Anyhow, it is a comforting place and I recommend it.

On Saturdays, there are services in the main Sanctuary, Tot Shabbat in the classrooms and Junior Congregation upstairs. Rabbi Alder is really smart and his sermons are always insightful and leave you wanting more. Cantor Yager trained as an opera singer and has a beautiful voice and is lively and engaging.

I have occasionally gone to the services and the dinners of this synagogue that has managed to…read moresurvive more than 100 years in a community that has constantly changed over the generations. I have made the acquaintance of two rabbis that have lead the congregation over the years. Both have managed to combine Orthodox Judaism with the modern world and provide inspirational teaching and leadership. I have usually found the synagogue's dinners entertaining as both the gourmet and historic dimensions of various kosher cuisines of various traditions are explored. The rabbis and the congregation have been most welcoming to Jews and non-Jews alike.
