The Duke of York's is something of an institution. Now owned by City Screen, this independent-style…read morecinema specialises in cult, indie and foreign-language films, as well as re-runs of the odd classic. Opened in 1910, it's one of the first commercial cinemas to still be in operation, and the interior - complete with balcony - is largely unaltered. The main auditorium is decorated in warm, cosy colours, although it suffered during the late 1970s as a venue for early punk rock concerts. Happily, it has now been restored to its former glory. You can tell it's going to be different from the facade - which has a pair of legs sticking out, Folies-Bergeres style, from the top left of the facade. For a start, the auditorium is licenced, so you can takes alcoholic drinks with you to consume during the film. And the choice of films is definitely not mainstream (venues showing foreign-language films are a dying breed, these days). On Saturday mornings there's a Kids club, with activities and a children's film (though presumably they don't take advantage of the alcohol licence...) and they can organise children's birthday parties too. At the other extreme of the age range, on Tuesdays the over-60s can see an early-afternoon film for just £3.50, and receive complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits! It's a membership venue as well (although it is not a requirement to see a film). Members can attend all sorts of specials events, screenings and receive discounts for their £28 a year (2008 prices). The cinema has a pleasant cafe-bar, open during the day, with a balcony for nice weather (although the din of Preston Circus road junction may not be quite so nice) and wi-fi (free to customers). Gone are the XXL cups of coke that cost more than Antigua, at the Duke of York's the offerings are homemade carrot cake and Czech lager. Celebrating its centenary year, this cinema cannot be missed if you are either living in, or visiting Brighton. The seats are comfortable, the theatre stunning and the crowds electric. Such was the Duke's importance to Brighton that many celebrities donated money to restore the Cinema.The back of the seats are littered with the names of local and national celebrities who helped keep the cinema alive. You won't find Avatar here, nor will you find the latest Hollywood 'romcom', but instead a very studious set of the world's best independent cinema. Special themed 'Lord of the rings' and 'Eurovision' nights mean you aren't just limited to a 90 minute treat, but a host of good nights out. An absolute must.

Dear Mr Allwood, I thought I should report the really poor experience I had at your cinema this evening at the hands of your manager Emily Coupland. I don't usually do things like this but I'm a fan of independent cinemas and believe Emily is doing you a disservice. I booked three tickets and then an extra one ticket for my step daughter (26), my daughter Esme (15) and her friend Molly (15). This was to see Knock Cabin which the girls were really looking forward to. They were excited and actually came in to use your toilets before we went for supper. When we returned to watch the film we were given our tickets only to then be 'pounced on' and questioned about the two younger girls ages. I confirmed they were over 15 however this wasn't accepted. We were then told they needed to produce 'ID cards' or that their mother (away on holiday) should send copies of passports. What 15 year olds carry ID cards?! The above was tantamount to telling me I was a liar. Having travelled from Lewes via Haywards Heath to pick up my stepdaughter and then do the journey in return I can safely say our whole evening has been ruined. To add insult to injury, despite remaining polite and courteous, your manager could barely suppress her smile while she refunded the tickets. Perhaps something happened when the girls came into use your toilets? Perhaps Emily just took a dislike to them for some reason? I appreciate she has a right to question their ages but to in effect accuse a father of lying seems excessive. I'll be leaving a review accordingly. Perhaps you should consider a new and more personable manager? Let me know if you do and we might come back! Thanks

I used to be taken to the cinema at Burgess Hill a lot as a child and have fond memories of the…read moreplace. it was originally built in 1919 and has gone through a number of refurbishments since then. The most significant was the addition of a second screen in 1990. As the building is not that large you will find the smaller screen quite limited and this may not be the place for someone with claustrophobia!! They won't get the new releases quite as quickly as the mega-plexes of Brighton or Crawley, but the place does retain the independent charm of it's heritage. However, they only seem to be a week or two behind and for a cheaper rate (£5.50 for an adult) and deals on family tickets, still worth a visit. They also have a 'super 8' deal where you can buy 2 seats for £8 and may use it for 50 visits. Now that's a pretty good deal and if you live in Burgess Hill well worth investing in. It's not quite as alternative as venues such as the Duke of York, but seeing as big business seems to take over everything these days, I am pleased to see my childhood favourite still going strong.

This ancient independent cinema is like your 90 year old grandfather, to some he may seem like a waist of space but if you are willing to look beyond your cineworld unlimited membership and IMAX bollocks you will find something amazing which deserves your respect. Firstly the seats are a bit uncomfortable, the toilets are a bit wiffy and the blasted buses block it's view 90% of the time, I have no qualms other than that. Potentially it's greatest asset is that it is more than a cinema with a gorgeous cinema historia bar, welcoming café and art gallery all in one building on the seafront. Other nice stuff is that the staff all seem to be pretty relaxed and approachable, student tickets are £3.50, and it is worth our admiration, respect and support due to its unimaginable longevity.

There's only one screening and sadly the directors are never present - which makes the title a bit misleading I know! - but its a great opportunity to catch films I missed at Duke of York. Occasionally there will be something I couldn't care less about but usually it's great art house, independent and world cinema flicks like Into The Wild, Wendy and Lucy and last night's gem, Synecdoche, New York. The rest of the time, this ugly multiplex shows mainstream movies like Fame, Harry Potter and Fantastic Mr Fox. They also sell extortionate ice-cream, popcorn and hot dogs in the foyer. Never tried them myself and unlikely to start now since one of my pet hates is listening to other people eating through a fab movie!

What can one say? This is pretty much like any other Odeon multiplex cinema. It's part of the…read morecomplex adjacent to the Brighton Centre, and now has a large (and separately operated) bar complex beneath it. As modern buildings of its type go, it's not the worst, but it definitely doesn't work in what is a prime town centre/seafront location. The interior is a warren of mezzanines and stairs, all decked out in the corporate colours with blue patterned carpets and cream walls. There are 8 screens in all, all of which except for screen 7 are wheelchair accessible (ie level access via lifts) and and have wheelchair spaces. On the ground floor there is a shop and snack bar selling confectionery and popcorn, and from 17:30h daily there is a licensed bar open to patrons only. This actually has stunning views of the seafront, but they don't seem to make much of it (a badly placed pillar doesn't help, but you still feel it is a missed opportunity). The film choice is your standard Hollywood blockbuster, and it doesn't stray far from this tried and tested formula. The staff seem pleasant and efficient enough, and some of the screens are quite large, which is good for recent releases. Prices are standard for non-London cinemas, with single adult tickets at £6 off peak and £7 at peak times (roughly week-day evenings and week-end afternoons and evenings). There are all sorts of discounts and concessions listed on the website. One advantage of the central location is that it is very easy to get to by public transport: the main Churchill Square bus stops are 5 minutes away, the railway station 10 minutes, and adjacent are the huge multi-storey car parks of the Churchill Centre. For performances with advertised start times of 17:30h onwards, customers using the Churchill Centre NCP 1 or 2 car parks get the first three hours free, provided they get their car park ticket validated by cinema staff. (This does not apply to the Russell Square NCP car park).

You can't beat the old fashioned cinema on London Road, with its one small screen and infamous legs poking off the roof. Well, you can't beat it, but maybe you can equal it. The brains behind the DofY have taken over part of Komedia in the Laines and added two new screens, enabling the range of movies to be greatly increased. They still focus on more art house and world cinema films but also touch a little more on the mainstream now as well. We popped in today on the off chance and were just in time to catch 'This is 40'. Like the original Dukes there is a delightful cafe/bar area, selling light meals, homemade cakes, ice cream, ales from the Dark Star brewery, and a selection of wines. I love the fact that you can take your alcoholic drinks into the movie - a real treat. You select your seats when you purchase your tickets. The back row has double seats for no extra cost so you can cosy up to your loved one! All the seating is really comfy and there is loads of leg room. This really does feel like a luxury experience compared with your mainstream cinemas. The toilets are upstairs and are definitely an improvement on the DofY -all brand spanking new with luscious soaps and hand creams. The price is slightly more than your average cinema but I would rather come here any day of the week than the Odeon or Cineworld. It was certainly a challenge for these guys to expand without losing the essence of what makes them special, but they seem to have achieved it hands down.

Really hate to have to do this…read more.. Why is it always that the really cool places to go have really attitudey unhelpful staff? It really let's places down. My mother has just had another baby recently and I love meeting them for coffees and occasionally going to see a film at the 'big scream' with them. The Big Scream gives new mothers an opportunity to view the latest films with their babies (under 12 months) in the company of other mothers and their wee screaming bairns. FAB idea, these are the kind of things I love about Dukeys. Anyway we decided to try it at Dukes @ Komedia this time around, to go drool over Gosling. Usually I am fine to accompany them. While I was buying a coffee and ticket I was told by the girl she'd have to check whether it was ok for me to go in as I didn't have a baby with me. I stated I was WITH a baby but still the manager had to come and chat with us. Kind of ridiculous - why would I Prefer to go to a film with a load of screaming babies shouting over it? Are you seriously being stuffy about it? It wasn't busy at all either. At first, when he began talking I thought he really wasn't going to let me in but as he went on he explained that the license prevented them from allowing single people in but in this case I would be viewed as a carer. I can understand turning away people on their own because it is specific for mothers BUT I was clearly here with mother and baby. It was the girl standing behind him that was being shirty and unpleasant, standing with her arms crossed, angrily trying to chip in. Really? Tone it down love. There was no need for that attitude - she doesn't have great people skills anyway as I saw her with some other customers. If they're going to carry on upholding the 'Dukes' name - such a great establishment, they could do with brushing up their customer service and she could learn how to smile! The coffee wasn't good either :( hopefully they'll improve next time around but I am a bit put off.

The tickets were priced at a staggering £22 per person-while even at other locations in the UK the prices were regular and not this high, sheerly for the experience of watching the latest release on an IMAX theatre in the neighbourhood and watching together as a family (our son stays in the UK & we in the US so it was one of those rare occasions when a Star Wars movie releases and we all can be together), we did not mind the exorbitant pricing. Overall a good experience, watching the movie together-on a huge screen with great acoustics. AirCon was not as effective both times, why, can't say.. maybe coz those days it was unusually hot in the country.
