My daughter (10) has been taking guitar lessons here for about 6 months. The customer service is amazing and the instruction is very high quality. When I brought in the electric guitar that was given to my daughter as a gift, Brad went out of his way to make improvements on it so that she would get the best experience possible for her first time playing. She has really come along well and loves practicing her chords and finger picking at home. When Christmas time was approaching Shana helped me pick out a new acoustic/electric guitar, she texted me pictures when they came in and set aside the one I wanted until I could pick it up a week later. Not bad. When i moved to Vallejo, these folks were welcoming and straight ahead. Granted prices are a fair chunk higher than online, but it's a local music store in an area that needs more community. I'm very picky when it comes to guitar stores. So this place was a marvelous surprise. It's clear the owner knows and cares about what he's doing. There's not a crap instrument in here: it's a good selection of entry-to-mid-level instruments from respectable makers (I've never played a bad Yamaha or Seagull). The lesson spaces are the nicest I've ever seen, bar none. Plus massage chairs for waiting parents! And, unlike some smaller music stores, the prices are totally reasonable for both lessons and equipment. In short, this is the kind of local guitar shop that you can support because it's really well done -- not just to "stick it to Guitar Center." read more

I'm not exactly sure how to rate this experience, except to say, unnecessarily "demeaning", & very pathetic! My daughter has been taking vocal lessons here for about 8 weeks, & is very happy with both her instructor, & her lessons. They have started doing casual recitals, & encourage the students to participate. Since my daughter is so new, she was pretty nervous about participating, but since it's not supposed to be a "high-stress" environment, she thought she'd give it a try anyway. She was faltering at times, due to nerves, & there were several ADULT women, (who I assume they were the mothers or relatives of other students), in the front row, watching, who began laughing out loud when she made mistakes! That is just beyond totally incomprehensible to me, as a mother, & as a human being. This is why she's a "student", NOT a teacher... I can't imagine myself laughing out loud, at any young student's first attempt to sing on stage, (let alone at anyone else)! I hope this sad lack of empathy, class, & basic common decency, coming from allegedly "adult" women, was an anomaly. I would encourage these women to feel free to bring their obvious "issues" to my face, explain their behavior, & see if they're still laughing :-) read more

I went to Consumer Music to rent a mic to attach to my blue tooth speaker for sound at an important event. When Brad saw my speaker, he explained how my speaker would not be adequate for what I needed. He suggested I rent a small PA system. Brad spent time explaining how the sound would work, demonstrated how to hook up the system (and let me video his instructions to use in case I forgot), he also gave me a discount on the rental! I have been a student at consumer music for about 3 years. I've studied piano and voice with Chie, which has really strengthened my foundation as a musician. Chie is a very kind and experienced teacher who can help achieve your musical goals no matter what level you are at. As a student at consumer music, I've attended many recitals for piano and voice which were always fun. Performing in front of friends and family to showcase what you have been working on, followed by snacks and mingling afterwards. Consumer music also has a ton of events on a monthly basis from their fusion fridays, which I haven't able to attend due to my work schedule, to group seminars. During one of their seminars, I was able to learn how to solo using the pentatonic scale on guitar, which was cool stuff. Shana and Brad are awesome and always help me out whenever I have questions or have problems with my fender strat. I told Brad that one of my goals for 2015 was to learn how to sweep pick on the guitar and he introduced me to a gang of cool guitarists such as Al Di Meola, Yngwie Malmsteen, Frank Gambale, and Larry Carlton. I play guitar in a church worship band (Iglesia El Buen Pastor) every sunday and when I need an accessory right away, Consumer music always has what I need! read more

Brad is great to work with, I took him an old fender acoustic i bought from a pawn shop. He made a few sugestions on what would make it play, and sound better, I had him put on new machine heads, re cut the nut, and saddle, as well as new strings. now my old P.O.S. sounds, and plays better than it ever has.And the price was very affordable. So I called around looking for a certain pedal board due to mine being fried inadvertently the previous weekend. I talked to Brad, and he went through some of the features of the board with me while my kids beat on nearby drums and pipes. Nothing to his discredit, but I would venture to say that Brad isn't around kids all that much hehe. Anyhow... When it was time to go, he gave both of them free harmonicas, no questions asked. I liked that. Shaana rang me up, and even threw in a free pic. These pics are like no pic I've ever played with, and the same night we had a show I used it and now have a new favorite. All in all, it's a nice little shop with a decent selection of gear and some friendly knowledgeable (Brad and Shaana) people. I'm writing this review a month after my initial visit because I wanted to give a complete review including this past month's overall feedback. About a month ago, a close friend of mine who is a music professional suggested I go to Consumer Music in Vallejo to get some expert guidance in buying an acoustic guitar. Brad, the owner was obviously so far more skilled and had far expertise than the chain store I went to previously. What a world of difference. To set the scene, the chain store had guided me into buying a cheaply made guitar but said that it was high-quality solid wood. Come to find out this was not the case at all. I soon learned that the guitar I had purchased there had been made of laminate sides and back instead of solid wood. This was obvious to the owner (Brad) of Consumer Music. I told Brad I wanted quality. He introduced me to a fine guitar company called Seagull out of Canada. They are made of solid wood and have a beautiful tone and are very affordable. He had me compare both (the Seagull and the one I had brought in) in a practice room. The difference was startling! The Seagull one was louder, deeper, and richer by far! I knew right then I had to have it. The Seagull guitar had rosewood back and sides, ebony fingerboard and just plain gorgeous! I was so impressed with how thoroughly Consumer Music took care of me. Not only was the hard case included ($250.00) but I got a digital tuner, books, finger guard, and the professional stiff strings were switched out for extra-light ones that made all the difference. Consumer Music has a fantastic music lesson program. After filling out an evaluation of the type of music I wanted to learn (in my case it's fingerstyle, folk, pop, and classical) I was paired up with one of 10 teachers best suited to fit my style and availability. My teacher is the great Bill Spooner, lead composer/guitarist of The Tubes, a 40 year band that played back up to Olivia Newton John in Xanadu! The only experience I had was the 10 chords from 40 years ago but I haven't picked up a guitar since. Bill didn't waste any time! Along with assigning me my scales to practice, he invited me to learn "Blackbird" by Paul McCartney! I love that song! I learned it in three weeks! That's what a great teacher and motivation will do! I'm having the time of my life!!! Consumer Music also has a great showcase program for students. It's an opportunity for everyone to perform in public once a month. They convert part of their store into a cool stage with lights, mics, amps and instruments. Everyone comes to enjoy watching and cheering on the performances of the students. It's great fun and gives everyone a chance to build confidence and just have a good time together sharing a common bond for their love of music. Apparently, Consumer Music has quite a reputation! I have been there on a number of occasions and the following anecdote didn't surprise me. A gentleman came in asking to buy an amplifier for a bass guitar. The owner said he had one in a practice room. The man pulled out his visa and said, "Ring it up." The owner said, "But you haven't even seen it yet." The man replied, "I don't need to. Everyone knows about your reputation. Your word is all I need - ring it up!" Consumer Music is in the business of not only making customers happy, but also making musicians out of customers. I may have dreamed of playing the guitar, but I never saw myself as an actual musician. Yes, it's true the staff do their best to outfit you with everything you need to set you on your way with your instrument and supplies, high-quality lessons and invite you to showcase at the Songbird Café. But, there's something else that is quite unique to this music store that I haven't found anywhere else - especially the chain stores. It's the personal touch. Every time I have visited the store, no matter how short or long I have been there - I have always come away with the staff (like Jesse) going out of their way to ask how I'm doing, giving me sincere encouragement, and making me feel welcome and respected as a fellow musician with a potential to grow and reach heights I never would have otherwise dreamed of. Brad and Shaana were great with us, I've bought 2 drum kits, one guitar an R24 recording device ,cables, harmonicas & staff is incredibly friendly and willing to work with me on price if they can. They carry some picks like Clayton that are hard to find. The assortment of Ukes is great! Tate store has a great vibe and a wonderful open mic called the Songbird. I always go to them first for gear. If the gear is something they don't carry then sometimes I have to go somewhere else but most of the time they are offering me something with a savings. My experience with Brad at consumer Music has been outstanding. I have always wanted to play the guitar but never got the hang of it. I saw the Chord Buddy on TV a few months ago and thought it was a great idea so i decided I would get it for Christmas this year. I looked at it online then saw there were dealers who carried it as well. I live in San Francisco and the closest music shop that carried it was in Vallejo. I called Consumer Music and spoke to Brad on a Wednesday and told him I was coming over there on Saturday. When i called Friday to make sure he had everything he told me he had put together a package for me with a better guitar at the same price. When i got there he had everything ready and i tried out a few guitars before i picked the one i liked. Well, it turns out the guitar was too wide for me, I couldn't reach around it comfortably when i was sitting with it for more then a few minutes. I called Brad and he said no problem, just bring it back and he'll exchange it. I did go back and got a different guitar, but this time the neck was too wide. A friend of mine let try his 3/4 guitar and it was perfect. I remembered why I couldn't play the guitar successfully before, my hands are very small. Once again, I called Brad and once again he said no problem. We must have talked 5 or 6 times working on getting me the right guitar. He has been extremely kind and patient with me. I decided to go all the way to Vallejo to pick up the Chord Buddy and guitar because I want to support small business when I can. He knows I make a special trip to go there and gives me the personal and friendly service I enjoy when buying something new. I've checked prices on line and at other guitar stores and his just about the same as any other brick and mortar store. He has taken quite a bit of time with me at every visit and has shown me how to do things correctly. The other day i even received a handwritten thank you note for doing business with his store. When was the last time anyone even SAID thank you let alone took the time to hand write a note. I'm very glad I went with Consumer Music for my purchase and would shop there again. read more
