I don't have a gym membership. No gym I've been to has given me a reason to purchase a subscription compared to what my apartment gym offers. While visiting Amarillo, the hotel gym I had access to was not cutting it for me and my routine. In my two long stays in Amarillo, I would constantly pass by the Contagion Athletics building and consider giving it a go. Last week, through all the dust, fire, and terrible dryness that Amarillo offered me, I bit the bullet and grabbed a $20 day pass just to try it. Immediately, I knew I'd buy a membership if I lived in Amarillo. You walk inside the spacious gym to find a large turf field, plenty of strength equipment all spaced from each other where it doesn't feel like you're ass to ass with your neighbors. There is so much strength and weight equipment to use from the rigs, the plate-loaded equipment, the free weights, competition-style weight set-ups, deadlifts, and more. Plenty of cardio equipment is on hand too, including 9 StairMasters and tons of high quality treadmills. They have a small looping cushioned track that I ran 3 miles on, which felt fantastic on the feet and joints. On top of that, they supposedly offer massages, saunas, personal trainers, a cafe, a barbershop, and car detailing. To a point, you don't need to go anywhere else. I got a great workout in here and the energy is great. There are tons of windows that face Business 40 and the rest of Amarillo so you get a ton of natural light. The temperature is comfortable in there which is great because some gyms are way too hot for no reason. Lastly, the space is just beautiful. CA is open 24/7 so you can always get a workout in. Anytime I'm in Amarillo, I'll be sure to give them a visit because they are worth the price of admission. This makes any gym feel like they're playing in the minor leagues in comparison. As someone that is only in town for a few days, I was honestly surprised by the $25 day pass. It's definitely a nice gym and has everything you need for a solid workout, but that price feels a little steep, especially if you're just passing through town and only need a quick session. If that's your situation, you might be better off checking out another gym or using your hotel gym if it has one. As always, if you want to give this place a try, go for it. Just know you'll be paying $25 for the day, and there aren't any discounts for veterans or first responders, there are many other places that do offer discounts if that's your background. One more thing, the saunas should really be on and heated up. After a workout, it's a bit of a letdown to head over for a quick sauna session and realize they're not even running yet. More than a gym...to me, Contagion Athletics is an elite sports training facility catering to every fitness level and busy "life" schedule of their clientele providing 24/7 access. The founder has invested in and continues to invest in state-of-the-art equipment...literally, there is something for EVERYONE including an indoor track and a training turf field! The addition of the recovery room featuring single-person saunas, a cold plunge, and massage chairs for those aching muscles is absolutely luxe. I realized this year that in order to reach my weight goal and improve my overall health, fitness, and strength that I needed to partner with one of their coaches. I needed someone to push me beyond my comfort zone, and Coach X, who holds a Bachelor's in Sports and Exercise Science from WTAMU, has done just that! I am super excited because I am only a week and a half in, and I am already seeing results as Coach X educates me on body mechanics and as he assists me in rebuilding and strengthening my body. The staff are super friendly, knowledgeable, and encouraging. They are more like Ohana than "staff." Love that the women's locker room has an inspirational Post-it quote vanity; so that as you see your reflection in the mirror, you are surrounded by all of these beautiful inspirational quotes that the women before you have left behind in order to lift others up. This is by far the best gym in Amarillo TX, and I would vociferously argue that it's the best gym from Amarillo to Dallas/Fort Worth. Literally nothing else compares if you're serious about fitness. I love that it's not adorned with television screens on every wall, in fact you will not find a single TV anywhere in the gym. The equipment is second to none, and feels like each piece was purchased with intentionality as opposed to soooo many other gyms that feel like they purchased a preselected lot of equipment like a value meal, and then decided to start a gym. It's more expensive than a cookie cutter corporate gym, but imho totally worth every penny. It's open 24 hours, the environment is unique, and to be able to workout with an open overhead door that you could fit an aircraft through, is an underrated, understated luxury that I never knew was missing from my life until I experienced it for myself. I love that it's locally owned and staffed by competent individuals who seem to care about the gym. I have never gotten the feeling from anyone there that it's just another job in a long line of jobs that ultimately don't matter. I cannot say that about many other gyms. Finally, it's just like a cool place to be. There is special attention paid to everything from the architectural design of the building to the lighting and sound system, to the amazing cardio room that overlooks west Amarillo. They regularly host car shows and fitness expos as well as the best bodybuilding show that Amarillo has to offer. We were driving home from Colorado and needed a break. My kids were asking for a Strawberry smoothie and I wanted some coffee. We saw this interesting building that advertised to be a Gym and a Cafe in one, and happened to have a drive through. So I figured I give it a try not knowing if that drive through was only for Gym members or for anyone. It turned out, it was for anyone. They make their Strawberry Smoothies with real strawberries and not strawberry powder or syrup so that was a plus. You can choose to add protein if you want or not. I also got a glimpse of their expresso machine which was fancier than what you would find elsewhere. I was being helped by Ethan who was extremely friendly. He was telling me how they opened up right at the height of COVID and were hanging in there to make ends meet. Since my kids now wanted to go use the restroom, I asked Ethan if they could use the facilities even though we didn't have a Gym membership. He not only said they could use it but could also come in and check out the gym if we wanted. I mentioned I was from out of town so wouldn't really want to waste their time. And he mentioned they were not like other gyms, but rather an art piece inside. I was more curious at this point. When I walked in, I was blown away by the architecture and design. It was more like a museum inside with a fighter jet engine hanging right above you as you walk in and a bench with a gigantic robotic arm as you walk further. Something else that blew me away was one of their employees tattooed their company logo on his arm. I had to ask if that was real and it was. I mean that takes some kind of dedication and commitment. All the equipment there was brand new and the place had a huge indoor field with turf and everything. Nonetheless, we used the restroom facilities and left but I truly wish we had something like this in Dallas. Especially considering I pay close to $110 per month at my Gym (Lifetime Fitness), this Gym only charges $70 per month which is insane. I don't live in Amarillo but every time we go to visit this is a guaranteed stop. Front desk service is always great, rarely crowded, great selection of equipment including Prime, Rogue, and Arsenal Equipment, clean locker rooms, and a fair price. The equipment is top of the line, just impressive. Whether you're new to the gym or a competitive lifter, they'll have what you need. The trainers know what they're doing because they all have degrees, not just certifications. They have an indoor track which is hard to find. They have indoor turf which is great for speed training (and as a former rugby player I appreciate getting work in there). It's the best gym I've been to.
