Hidden in a quiet corner of Siena's historic center, the Museo della Contrada Priora della Civetta feels like stepping into the heart of the Siena community. Housed in the medieval Castellare degli Ugurgeri fortress, it offers an intimate and deeply personal glimpse into one of Siena's seventeen historic districts...the Civetta, or "Little Owl."
The space tells its story through tradition. The image is everywhere...adorning banners, decorations, and decor, symbolizing the contrada's heritage and its centuries-old connection to Siena's famous Palio horse race. The setting feels cohesive centered on deep historical roots.
Inside, the museum is rich with history. You will see beautifully preserved Palio banners, known as drappelloni, along with costumes, ceremonial items, and artworks that document victories and traditions passed down over generations. This authentic experience felt genuine and rooted in local life. Per our tour guide, visitors are sometimes guided by members of the contrada themselves, which adds a level of passion and storytelling you simply cannot replicate.
The setting itself enhances the experience. The ancient stone walls and historic rooms of the fortress-like building create a sense of stepping back in time. As you move through the museum, you are actually walking through the physical space where that history has been preserved and lived. Its focus is about the Civetta contrada and its role in Siena's cultural life. But for many visitors, that focus is exactly what makes it special. The museum is based on the premise that history is not just displayed behind museum glass, but something actively remembered and celebrated by a community. read more
