It is a very eye catching and…read moredetailed sculpture that depicts Mardi Gras Indian Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana, in full costume, with feathers covering him from head to toe. He has a flowing head dress and back piece and he is seen holding a tambourine in his right hand while striking a pose. Chief Montana was a Mardi Gras Indian for over 50 Years. Sadly, he died defending the Mardi Gras Indian tradition in the New Orleans City Council Chambers. The bronze sculpture was made by Sheleen Jones-Adenle and was dedicated in 2010. Funding for the statue was received from the Edward Wisner Donation Trust. I love this sculpture. It is New Orleans at its finest. It is very picturesque and draws you in. Jones-Adenle is also the artist that is responsible for the nice brass band sculpture right across from this one. There is metered street parking available around and in a reasonable walking distance from the sculpture. You may also find a commercial lot to park in as well. Well, as with most public art I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful art in the area to maximize your time and trip. Luckily, there are a lot of other interesting pieces of art in the park to load your itinerary with in addition to all that Louis Armstrong Park has to offer.

These three panels were pained by Langston Allston and highlights the life of Captain Andre…read moreCailloux, a black civil war hero.The pieces originally covered the doorways of the St. Rose de Lima Church, the site of Cailloux's actual funeral, but have since been moved inside the church, after it was decommissioned by the Archdiocese in 2005. the tryptic's panels are titled Andre and Félicie Cailloux, the Battle of Port Hudson, and Father Paschal Maistre, respectively. The left panel depicts Captain Cailloux getting married to his wife Felicie Callioux, There is also images of two men boxing and a group of slaves on this panel. The center panel shows Captain Cailloux, among some other black soldiers, in the heat of the Battle of Port Hudson, where he died. There is also a small image of a white officer on a horse on this panel. The right panel depicts Father Claude Paschal Maistre, a white priest presiding over Cailloux's funeral. It also has an image of black Civil War soldiers carrying a casket and a grieving woman in a white dress. You will see a brass band and funeral attendees marking in the funeral procession in the background. It is believed that his funeral led to the tradition of second lineing. It was noted as the largest gathering of free and enslaved African-Americans at that time. This piece is currently on top of a bar area in the church, which is currently being used by the Son of a Saint organization as their temporary headquarters. It is a nice three piece mural that tells a wonderful story of an unsung Civil War hero. The mural has a lot of detail and has a masterful use of color. It it definitely worth taking a look at, if you are able to. You must get out of you vehicle to see the mural since it is inside. There is free street parking spots available and the church may have a few spots available in its lot, but they are scarce. Fun fact: The pastor from the right panel that presided over Cailloux's funeral, Father Maistre, was forced to leave the church by the archbishop because of him preaching and attending to the needs of escaped slaves and free blacks.

The New Orleans African American Museum is also located here, as is the Backstreet Cultural Museum. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans. I like this neighborhood a lot for its small cafe's, museums and this creepy feeling of being haunted. The New Orleans African American Museum has a project to revitalize the area and to mark the history. They are doing great work for the area. There are some spots that seem out of place here, like a juice bar.

Treme is not the destination for most tourists in New Orleans. It's the seedier, poorer part of…read moretown where the homes are smaller, and not as well-kept as homes in other areas. You probably won't feel safe, but I didn't at all feel threatened while taking a morning run through the area. This is the home of Willie Mae's and Dooky Chase's, where you'll get the best friend chicken you've ever tasted! It's also the setting for HBO's television drama that bears the same name.

A party to celebrate the American drinking holiday, Cinco de Mayo, and the crumbling infrastructure…read moreof New Orleans, aka the Canal St Sinkhole. Suggested as a joke by some locals, work of Sinkhole de Mayo spread quickly through the masses until literally thousands of people had responded on facebook. It was on the news! This is where it's funny to be a California native living in New Orleans, as people I hadn't heard from in years came out of the woodwork to send me links to news articles about this event and say, "Is this real? Is this a real thing? What is happening down there?" Yep, it's real, and yep, it was awesome. There was a costume contest, a mariachi band, some workers from Harrah's came over to dance, someone was selling commemorative t-shirts. People came with their coolers full of booze, of course. We came to this once-in-a-lifetime event because, yeah, this happened. And now we've been. The sinkhole has now been filled and fixed, but I will never forget Sinkhole de Mayo.

This event had a wide selection of vendors with a great selection of food, beer, cocktails and wine. Amanda Shaw was the highlight of the music and the crowd wasn't too crowded so that made it enjoyable as most of the food and drink was quick to access. The only vendor that had an unpleasant line was offering sauteed scallops and I sadly didn't get any of those. Overall a nice event with a good crowd, good food, good drinks and good times!

Jazz musicians. Writers. Painters. Chefs. Sculptors. Artists in so many different genres. I know that the streets and sidewalks of New Orleans always speak to me. Black Butterfly was sculpted by artist John T. Scott in aluminum. Scott received a MacArthur Genius Award. Amazing! Scott's works often explore themes related to the rich Afro-Caribbean culture and musical heritage of New Orleans. Scott taught art at Xavier University for over 40 years. It was interesting to hear his son, Ayo Scott who is also a gifted artist, talk about his dad's influence at a gallery opening several years ago.
