American soldiers who had fought in the Revolutionary War had been paid with paper money called Continental Currency that had depreciated so much that is was almost worthless. As a result, in 1783, the Pennsylvanian government purchased the Depreciation Lands--720,000 acres in the counties of Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Lawrence, and Armstrong--from Indians in order to compensate the soldiers. Currently, the Depreciation Lands Museum is open on Sundays from 1-4 PM from May through October. Some special events, such as ghost-hunting and the Hydref Fall Festival, are held at other times. The suggested donation is $5 per adult and $3 per child, and these donations can be paid with cash or check in person or with PayPal or credit card on the website. My husband and I parked our vehicle in a parking lot that was near a bank across the street. We spent one hour at the museum, although other people might want to visit for a longer time. We felt interested in seeing the church, cemetery, tavern, barn, workshop, log house, blacksmith shop, Indian wigwam, herb garden, bake oven, smokehouse, and schoolhouse. All staff members were volunteers. The staff members wore costumes, and they reenacted work such as processing flax into linen thread, weaving the linen thread into cloth, cooking pumpkin soup in a hearth, making nails out of iron, etcetera. The volunteers spoke nicely to us, and they communicated educational information.

Honestly it's worth it. They are open on Sundays from 1-4pm except when it's winter. And seriously you could spend the whole 3 hours there. The workers are extremely knowledgeable and they act like they came right out of a history book for that time period. It's great for all ages.

They had a banjo band playing! You heard that right -- a banjo band! And... you they were good! Sorta gave me a Haufbrau house kinda vibe. Our fish came ( I got the small and it was plenty). I got there around 5:20 and I wasn't very close to the front of the line. But because of the wait it was nice to talk to the people around you in line. There were even girl scouts selling cookies to everyone waiting which I thought was genius. They have a big fish sandwich and a small fish sandwich and then you get two sides. You can get stewed tomatoes, mac and cheese, coleslaw, or fries. They might have different mains other than the fish sandwiches but I usually just go for that so I don't think I looked at anything else. It is cash only but there's an ATM on site and you can order ahead for pickup. But if you have the time I would say sit and wait and hang out there because they have a banjo band that will also play polka. It's a really great experience and the food is delicious. Just know that you might wait a little bit but it's worth it.

For nine bucks you get a glass mug filled with that beautiful mulled wine, and if you bring your mug back, you get a refill for four bucks. It got more crowded as the day went on, so I would recommend going early. The museum is part of your admission into the Christmas Market, and it is definitely worth a visit. Small, but interesting. I enjoyed the log cabin as well. We didn't buy anything from any of the vendors, but there was a decent variety of wares. Parking is tough, even earlier in the day, so be prepared to walk a bit.

The last exhibit I checked out was called Aftersound and it was quite small. I saw most of it in about 10-15 minutes. Since I was the only person visiting, I was able to try out the interactive pieces without waiting. At the end of the school year in May, they have the senior design showcase at the Miller Gallery and that is definitely worth checking out -- the work shown is always super creative and of amazing quality.

You have to see them in person. The Meissen gallery features unique, VERY antique, porcelain figures that were part of Mrs. Phillips' collection. We were immediately greeted upon entering (Saturday afternoon) and told how to navigate the museum. There are four different galleries to view. You gotta see these pieces in person and read the information. A very cool place to visit before grabbing some lunch! And for only $4 for adults you can't beat that price! It wasn't overly crowded when we visited either.
