It was a three mile loop that took you past a couple of lakes. It involved walking on some uneven ground (roots and stones) but it was relatively flat and very woodsy. We visited in mid July and it was quite buggy so make sure you are covered or sprayed to minimize the bites. Minnesota parks are so beautiful. I get so worries about where I'm stepping, I sometimes forget to look up and all around to enjoy the beauty.

The facilities were well maintained and the campsites have everything you need to have some quiet, sit around the fire, and eat your camp meals. The park itself offers great trails, will set you up with fishing gear, as well as rent you a canoe or kayak or rowboat for 4 hours or a full day. The new trail center is a beautiful building, and the beach is a wonderful place to have lunch or snooze in the sun. We did the hiking loop that takes you back by the backcountry sites. It was about a 3-4 hour hike and we saw a lot of wildlife and had the trail all to ourselves. Next time we go, we'll be staying at the paddle-in site on that loop. It was the perfect spot. We will be back here again.

The Laurentian Environmental Center (LEC) is many things to different groups…read more For some it is a conference center, for some it is a training or team building location, for others LEC is a retreat location. For most LEC is an escape from city/suburban life and a chance to learn about, and interact with, nature. For me LEC is serenity. LEC is also a place for school groups (elementary middle and high school) to experience environmental education. The LEC staff is great and includes naturalists, teachers and story tellers. Students hike, geocache, canoe, fish, learn outdoor and survival skills, play games, learn team building skills, and learn about nature (plants animals weather and more). The cooks and food are fantastic. The cabins are comfortable (bunk beds) place to roll out your sleeping bag and relax after a long day of adventure. Cabins are heated and cozy any time of year.

As you may have noticed, my family and I are definitely adventures even in our own backyard. Today…read moremy family and I decided to take a trip to Tower and visit the old Train Museum. Trains have always been a fascinating thing for me because at one point that was our way for transportation, and the history of the tracks forming from the East to the West is a phenomenal tail. This particular train that sits here permanently in Tower, MN was a former passenger train that ran from Duluth to the Iron Range. Looking inside the the old engineering area is a little eerie looking at all the original speedometers, the compartment for the coals, where a piece of rope once was to help ring the bell on top of the engine. You could almost imagine the puffs of smoke roaring overhead, the whistle blowing, a conductor yelling, "All aboard!" It all feels so real. From Wikipedia it states, "Tower station, often called the Tower Passenger Depot, is a former passenger railroad depot in Tower, Minnesota, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1916 by the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad, it provided passenger train service until 1951." It's a fun place to bring the whole family. Come check it out, you won't be disappointed.
