Today I had the #Misto Quente" the Brazilian eggs benedict with crispy potatoes - dalish. Sat at the bar; Sam behind the bar was in point. The restaurant switches out their menu theme every 3-4 months... including decor and vice. They just had Hawaii, now they're Brazilian and the next month they're doing New Orleans and then after that, they don't know lol... how cool though. read more

We came here on a Tuesday morning for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. If you get there between 8am-11am, they have an $8 early bird breakfast menu. We got a smoked salmon scramble and the tres leches griddle cakes. The total came out to $18, which is an incredible deal! The smoked salmon scramble was fantastic and came with roasted potatoes and an arugula salad. The potatoes were very crispy and seasoned nicely, the salad was acidic and complimented the rest of the food well. The griddle cakes, which were just regular pancakes, came with chopped almonds, sweet condensed milk and a guava syrup drizzle. The pancakes were fluffy and tasted homemade, and the guava syrup was a tasty and interesting twist. They have about 4 items on their early bird breakfast menu, all of which are a great deal for only $8 and change. Where can you find breakfast at a sit down restaurant (besides IHOP or Denny's) for $8?? Will definitely be back! read more

We decided to give Cooks Tavern another try. We have eaten here several times over the past few years, mostly disappointed... and then we wait a year or so to come back and see if things have gotten better. Unfortunately, we were disappointed once again. We thought that since they advertised Moroccan month we might find something tasty out of that vibrant cuisine. There were very few 'Moroccan' dishes, mostly seeming to feature a lamb sausage. We ordered the dish of sausage with shakshuka and it was mostly mediocre. Oddly spiced lamb sausage just doesn't make it ... The service was slow and uneven. They don't have bussers to clear tables and the wait staff is not well organized enough to clear, prep and seat diners even they had at least a dozen people waiting in the front Great location, easy parking, pleasant atmosphere, great bathrooms. Now, if they could only serve better food and be more professional in the dining room. We will give it a try in a year or so and see if they ever get it right. read more

Amazing experience!!! Zach is a brilliant waiter - very attentive and engaging, I went here on a Winter's day - and sat in the corner- lured in by the sunshine I ordered a side of the smashed fingerling potatoes not listed on the menu but I craved potatoes and they told me they did indeed make them which made me sooo HAPPY I also ordered a cup of tomato soup. I asked for a dipping sauce like ranch and the waiter Zach said "Sorry we don't have any ranch but the chef has created a green goddess dressing - would you like to try that?" so that's what I tried I was WOWED - the whole meal and the dressing was so delicious! Dipping potatoes in and out of a dressing (which was named green goddess - but more of an elevated garlic aioli with pizazz and then potatoes into made-from-scratch refreshing tomato soup with Parmesan and the sun streaming onto my table - what a delight! I really had a great time here! my brother and his wife brought me here and they mentioned that the place changes up a good chunk of their menu every season. right now, Spain was in season and they had plenty to choose from on their menu. Service was very great and the staff here appear to really like their job. They weren't too rushed or out of it while serving us the whole hour we were there. We all actually had the paella plates. All three of us thoroughly loved them! just very flavorful and very well done. A good amount of seafood was also present and it was a very filling dinner. It also came with a salad that was good and filling with bread. This place looks like it has been around for a while but I was thoroughly impressed and really can't wait to go back next time I come to town. Parking is on the street but there was plenty of neighborhood parking to choose from. They also have outdoor seating which I'm looking forward to trying this Summer. read more

Every time we come here, the food and service is just a little more disappointing. This used to be a favorite, especially with their rotating menus, but the last three or four times we've been here, the food hasn't been quite as flavorful as I hoped. We just left, and despite being one of three tables on our side of the dining room, it took us almost 20 minutes to get our food. Multiple tables ordered as we got our food, and almost all of them got their food before we'd finished the meal. Not sure how many more times we'll be willing to spend our time and money on something that is increasingly feeling like a middling experience. read more

Chicken and Waffles The portion size was the only downfall I left wanting more, but that's also because the quality was so high. The fried chicken thigh was nice and juicy in the middle and crisp on the outside. The waffle was wonderfully prepared with bacon cooked into the waffle it was a perfect accompany to the chicken. Glad the dish came with a few eggs that were nice and soft. The service was fast had my meal out in less than 15 minutes and the waiter though a little high strung and short with me, but I could tell they were a little short staffed. I've eaten here a few times now any typically it's pretty good. Great drinks too. We ate here last night with a friend and I was disappointed this time. I had the seafood stew and it was just okay and the portion was really tiny for $27. I was the first to finish by a mile and I was still hungry after. It didn't have a lot of seafood in it and the salmon tasted really "off". My boyfriend had a burger and said it was good but really messy and our friend had the Night Hawk which is a traditional breakfast for dinner. My girlfriend and I decided to finally try cooks tavern after driving past so many times and saying "we should check that place out" well we did tonight on a Monday at 7:30. They had a Hawaiian themed menu, so we tried the lumpia and grilled mahi mahi. Taste was amazing, Portions were on the smaller side, so not super shareable. However one appetizer and entree was enough to satisfy for a late dinner. We chose the coconut cake with passion fruit paste for dessert and it was ok IMO. Server was polite and attentive. We felt welcome and were seated promptly. Ambiance was really cool. They have it all decorated to complete the Hawaiian tiki vibe. In two weeks it's Brazilian theme. So we'll be back! What a cool north Tacoma spot. What a gem. Hope this place sticks around for a while! read more

Had a great night at Cooks Tavern. The place was packed so we decided to sit at the bar for dinner so we didn't have to wait for a table. The bartender (and all of the staff) were fantastic, friendly and provided a high level of service. Every month the restaurant highlights a different type of cuisine and this month it was Mississippi Delta. BRUNCH BABY! We had such an amazing brunch that we then went back about a week (or less) later when my in-laws were visiting and it was just as good. Both times I got the Farmer's Omelet with potatoes and a biscuit. The omelet and goat cheese are so silky and smooth and pairs well with the mushrooms! The potatoes are seasoned to perfection - my hubby kept stealing mine. He got the French toast, which was good, but really sweet. My daughter devoured her scrabbled eggs and ate 1/2 of a very large, very yummy waffle. My hubby also stole her bacon which he said was good. I have to give it to them, Cooks Tavern is some of the best food I've had in Tacoma. Not only that, it's versatile, fresh, cozy, and classic all at the same time. They have great options for all meals of the day, and are great for almost any celebration. I also love how often they incorporate new cultural dishes. A special note about the quality of the ingredients. Everything tastes local and homemade, wouldn't have it any other way. The potatoes are to die for, and that's really just the beginning. This time I got the foragers omelette - and it was nothing short of delish. Grand and bold flavors in a classic breakfast staple, Cooks really knocks it out of the park! The drinks are always spot on, the pineapple sage is incredible. I always say it tastes like tropical Christmas. I am not one to leave reviews, let alone negative ones. This was our 3rd time to Cooks Tavern, the first two times where okay, nothing to report in particular, but this time assured us we will not be back. The atmosphere & staff were nice, but the meal I had was probably the worst I can remember. The steak was so tough I could hardly cut or chew it, the side..I'm not really sure what that veggie was, neither were tasty. They forgot to put in our starter order so the entree came before we realized the starter hadn't been submitted. Calamari generally varies from place to place, but I always like it, this was the worst I've had. My husbands meal was better than mine, but he was underwhelmed overall. read more

I ran into this this Tavern while purchasing some towels and checking out the yard sale, on the corner of 26th and Alder , with bright bountiful beautiful flower baskets hanging and people were good a plenty , that's always a good sign. I attended just before dinner, so the menu was limited , but still just enough for me chicken and waffles it be people!! With bacon bacon to the waffle and chives it was a tasty combination served with two boneless chicken pieces full of flavor, with bourbon maple syrup!!! My husband was so kind to order me a Andien Bird!! Cachaca Fermented sugar cane juice, Aperol an Italian bitter, and lime , different to my taste buds but definitely competition for the mimosas I like to drink with breakfast Plenty of street parking, small parking lot on side, and do not get this restaurant confused because there is another restaurant attached to the same color building with slightly different food. The service was good and the ambiance I believe I explained in the beginning is it's always nice to sit outside and enjoy a good meal in the Sun with nice decor!! Based on the other reviews, I'm guessing my visit was an anomaly. We were seated fairly quickly and I remarked on how I liked the overall flow of the restaurant: large, open windows to the patio made the inside and outside areas mesh well together. The art on the walls was unique and attractive. However, that's where the positive aspects of my visit end. Our food was delivered to the table cold. Not lukewarm, but seriously cold. And there was a black hair cooked in to my eggs. I tried to work around it, since nobody ever came back to our table to check on us or refill the drinks. Unfortunately, I had lost my appetite and only choked down a few bites. My wife's waffle was also cold. Eventually, someone walked by and took our plates, but barely stopped enough to ensure our meal was satisfactory. I would have loved to politely give feedback on the temperature and the hair in the food, but opted to just get out of there. I am hoping it was just an "off" day, but it was off enough that I won't likely be back. read more

Ordered takeout tonight via online (toasttab) because it's been a day already. Ordered fugazza bread (baby likes fancy bread), tomato soup, gnocchi (have ordered this dine-in for baby before), chicken fried chicken sandwich, and side salad with green goddess. Parked on street and took stroller with baby because I wasn't sure how the food would be packaged. When I arrived I could see several people working there but no one greeted me, so I looked around and headed toward where my food was waiting, which happens to be the bar. Server (possibly expeditor or manager on duty) yelled at me that I needed to leave because children are not allowed in bars. I tried to say I just wanted my food, and they were like yeah you gotta get out. Went back to waiting area as she reviewed my order then handed me my food. My issue is that there was no, "I'm sorry!" It was just, very abrupt. Food service takes on a new light before and after kids, you know? And I get it, but I wouldn't have gone over there if someone had given me a nod, wave, a couple words, something that indicated I was recognized as a person coming to eat their food. So I get home and the gnocchi was next to nonexistent so baby doesn't really have a meal (this is inconsistent with prior experience where there was plenty and it was somewhat recently because same preparation style ordered so just diff quantity!) and the herb and onion focaccia has crushed red peppers on it making it unsuitable for filler for baby. Luckily she likes the soup, which wasn't for her. Anyway, normally I really like this place but it is just added to the list of places that was excellent or is excellent without children. I wish they were a little more polite, a little more consistent with the appetizer, and a little more descriptive with their bread appetizer. read more

Great local place to get a late night meal with excellent customer service. There was only 3 servers and our server had to double up as bartender. He still provided us amazing service and was attentive. Service 5 stars! Ambiance was a little dim for me, but might just be the feel of a tavern. But nice, spacious, nothing fancy very tavern feeling but cozy & comfy! Great acoustic so you can at least hear your conversations at your table and not everyone talking. Food is good, we went when they were running Barcelona food specials, but they had their regular menu as well, so that is good for those regulars that frequent the restaurant. The empanadillas were amazing, very different filling. The clams chorizo was okay, the seafood was okay, the pork was the best we ordered, it was definitely seasoned from Barcelona . Dessert was to go, we didn't have room to eat, they accommodated the ala mode and made it to go. The apple crisp and date cake were definitely beyond our expectations. Service was great 3. My food was really tasty Cons: 1. My date got food poisoning!!!! 2. In Tacoma, the health rating is 1 of 3 scores, poor, good, or great. The food safety/health rating is "good" (which really isn't good, but adequate)--making it less surprising that my date got food poisoning 3. In the middle of our meal, a staff member approached a table seated in another section and went on a loud rant about how the staff were being treated poorly by management, and he was leaving and other staff were leaving, spewing profanities, telling the customer to stop supporting this restaurant, and stating he hoped the place burns to the ground. Our server was great, but this was pretty uncomfortable. (Should we not be eating here and supporting a business that allegedly treats employees poorly? Is this disgruntled staff member going to do something bad? TLDR; not worth getting food poisoning. read more

We had gone for a hike today and were starving. When we got there, we waited about 5 minutes before someone came and seated us at one of the empty tables. They were not busy when we got there. Our server greeted us right away and was friendly. I typically LOVE corn pudding; however, the delta corn pudding was so bland and oily. I definitely wouldn't recommend. The pulled pork sliders were not hot and barely warm, but they were just okay. Nothing amazing but still edible. The steak was way over cooked, it was ordered at a medium and came out as well done. We didn't see our server for a bit after cutting into and my friend was hungry so they just ate it. The seasoning was decent for them since they don't like pepper or anything near it. The fries were hard like they were old and fried a second time. Overall, it was pretty underwhelming experience and i don't think I will go out of my way to visit again. read more

My family took me to Cooks Tavern for my birthday dinner. I had checked out the menu and knew exactly what I wanted to order ahead of visit. We started off with the calamari and it was lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The accompanying sauce was delicious. We all enjoyed it so thoroughly that we had to put in for another order. I was excited to order the salmon for my main course but was informed that they had run out. I decided on the flat iron steak instead. It comes with a generous portion of chimichurri butter. I spread it all over my steak, mashed potatoes, and broccolini. Yummy! My son ordered the same thing and I was lucky enough to be able to take home his left overs as well as mine (his had no steak left over). I gently heated it up the next day and it was just as delicious! They have dinner specials during the week for $15. I will have to return for steak night. Highly recommend! read more

This is a great breakfast spot! I am super impressed with Cooks. Service was friendly and prompt, the coffee (which most breakfast places overlook) was really good- strong and dark as coffee should be. I ordered the "Forager's Omelette"- was so delicious/ cooked perfectly. The crispy potatoes were a great touch to a great breakfast. I also ordered a side of biscuits and gravy and it was delicious!
