For the price and crowd size, I expected more. The staff seemed stretched thin, and the value just wasn't there. Good for a quick bite if you're nearby and patient, but temper your expectations.

They have dining in a small section upstairs and some seating downstairs, and they ask you to wait until you're called to come get your food so it doesn't hold up the line since it's a small entryway. I think they had a bathroom, but I didn't use it. Like I said, don't except much from the food here, my sandwich had maybe a slice of cheese and one tomato in it and the rest was all bread/baguette. On the walls, behind the counter, next to you, behind you... everywhere you look... puppets! This cafe was my favorite find on a recent trip to St Malo where too many tourist traps abound. La Java is an original joint, the real deal where the owner runs his shop with a good dose of humor and booze. Sit down, relax and don't take anything too seriously. The drinks are cheap, the company friendly and the atmosphere is like nothing you'll ever see anywhere else. Enjoy the happy bric-a-brac and wisecracking that pervades this gem of a cafe. If you feel like chatting to the owner, why not sit at the bar on one of the swings? Uh, huh. Yep, they've got swings. Did I mention that I love this place?
