Not wanting to pay 12 euros a kilo for a bird at the Thanksgiving store, I went to my neighborhood boucherie to order the bird. "Bien sur!" they said, and also mentioned that two orders had already been placed for Thursday. Today I went to pick up my Turkey. The butcher commented "c'est une belle dinde!" I suppose that only a man of the meat trade could lovingly look at a turkey carcass and say that. But I had to agree. At a little over 4 kilograms, and costing around 7 euros a kilo, it was definitely less expensive than ordering one in the Marais. The nice butcher used a torch to burn off any remaining feathers, and even partially trussed the bird for me; I mentioned that I was going to stuff her with vegetables and aromatics. Since he didn't have a plastic bag large enough, he gave me a nice reusable canvas bag with the boucherie logo on it. Now that's service! I also noticed a group of teenagers on break from school ordering roasted chicken and potatoes. The other meats in the cold case looked fresh; I think next time I'll try their pâté, some sausages, or even some poulet rôti.

The North American section made me giggle. I grabbed some fancy French mustards and cookies to bring home for friends and family. Unsure if any locals actually come here or if it's ALL tourists. The layout was extremely confusing to me. Now, I'm sure there are some simply fantastic elements to this store that evaded me due to the sea of people inside. But, I think Erewhon had more going for it. Artistic, clean, bountiful displays of produce. More organization, better lighting, etc. I felt like I could actually see the products at Erewhon, whereas here I was fighting with a lot of noise.

The Maison Butter fridge gets a little hectic in the mornings and by end of the week it is very picked over. Stock varies, sometimes they don't have all flavors stocked. The prices here are higher, but it is a bigger shop with more varied gourmet foods. If you want a one stop shop spot for french food to bring back to the US, this is it. They have vacuum seal bags for 1 euro for the butters (or cheeses!).

They allow one group at a time into the shop for a fully curated Jamon Beurre experience. Yep, that is all you can get here. Ham sandwiches, but it's a much more involved experience than that. When you walk in, there is an entire wall with a cooler displaying every kind of ham possible. You have to pick whether you want cured or just baked ham. What region? They offer Italian, French, Spanish and then you have to narrow it down to the region! Then you do the same with the cheese. I ended up getting two sandwiches, the cured ham from Spain's basque country paired with Ossau-Iraty, or basque sheep milk cheese. My other sandwich was a French baked ham sandwich with comte. Which was the winner? I have to say, the cured meat from Spain was out of this world and in our taste test, was the top winner. I know, I shouldn't say that in France!
