The "attorney" I witnessed was the biggest embarrassment I could have ever imagined. This firm claims to be all for fairness and wellbeing of the father. But what I saw literally seemed like they were working for the other team. I have ZERO legal experience and could have done a better job than the attorney in the case I was witness to. You think a big company that "fights" for men is someone you want to represent you? Most would think yes of course....but NOPE, do not hire these shady crooks. My attorney Clayton Morgan was an absolute disgrace. I contacted Cordell's internal Client Care department who handles issues with billing and your attorney...and it was a joke. They take forever to respond, they will have your attorney's back even when they are in the wrong, and will not refund you regardless!! I reported Clayton for price padding times on my invoices and for complete lack of transparency on the times that were billed to me with their BS descriptions on the work that was completed. Sarah Dotson, Laura Grimm, & Stacey Carlton with the Client Care dept all were handling my disputed charges with Cordell who were clueless and not helpful. You would hope their internal investigation dept would be more thorough and transparent, but not at all. Long story short, the stingy 'managing partner' of the Indianapolis Cordell branch was 100% in favor with my crooked attorney Clayton Morgan for what he did to me. There wasn't going to be s single possibility that a good resolution would come from this because the 'managing partner' is as crooked as their attorney's at this branch!! This company has a horrible reputation for treating their customers with lack of respect, transparency, and price padding. I ignored the honest reviews and hired them because I thought what everyone else though...big company for men and why not sounds great. Listen, just because they are a big company with a flashy website and they heavily advertise for me, it's a scam to just pay way more than what you should be paying. I spent over $4,500 before I even got to mediation...and he argued with me daily. I fired these crooks before mediation and found a smaller more reputable firm. I don't know where i should start, me and my wife hired Stephen to represent me and help me to get her 2 years old son primary custody. But before we even started that process, we had to go thru Emergency temporary custody because father ended up in Prison for 6 months and refused to let us see her son. Emergency custody was supposed to be easy and 1/1 process but it got more complicated because of Stephen lack of commitment , effort and motivation to prepare for hearing. Until he change his approach to the clients, care more about their situation I would advise you to look for another solution. Even if you do hire them, you will probably ended up firing them before your case is over and then they will make sure to make that process as much difficult as they possibly can. Our retainer fee was refiled every monday, with statement what was done in last week. But then suddenly for some reason you need to wait 14 working days until they issue back your money, because of their "policy". Even if we explained that we decided to go with another counsil and that they are holding that process because of that unreasonable hold of our money , they dont care. It is not just "another" process, it is not some insurance claim process... We are talking here about life of the 2 years little boy that is coming back to UNSAFETY enviorement. I thought that was wonder because my xhusband has a 6 figure SALARY and had me a stay at home mother to raise children. I retained them in 2018 and my lawyer that was assigned to my case was Sarah Rizzolo out of Boulder and she was horrible from the get go. They also have to consult with the Leading Attorney and charge you the higher rate for their time. They conveniently run out of money right before the court hearing. Avoid this place (not the particular location but the company). Had a very simple, straightforward modification case. Everything they needed was documented, prepared and laid out as to timelines, context, and important things to highlight. As others mentioned there were tons of bs charges and "conferring", menial tasks were lumped together with 'preparation' to inflate time billed (block billing). Several obvious noted errors on bills. Constantly trying to have more phone conversations which are useless and used to bill, not define strategy as this is a poor way to efficiently strategize. Constantly pushing us to file worthless motions and proceedings to increase costs. Ignored suggestions on what to focus on and highlight (I am also a professional and aware of what is and isnt important for this particular case). Hugely inflated bill, preparation was about 5 times more than what was believable, and even worse after considering the courtroom performance and handle on the facts of the case. Attorney with said massive preparation allowed them self to be owned by opposing counsel who obviously didnt spend any time prepping at all (missed several facts, yet knew how to push their overall point). Would have been better off arguing the case myself. Extremely disappointed performance and focus wise and very much worse off financially for it. This was with a supposed "lead litigator" who with such a title would be expected to at least have some experience and know what they are doing. I cannot stress the simplicity or brevity of the material in this case. Nor the zero added value that came from the mass of preparation between temporary and final hearings. For 15 times the preparation as the temporary hearing, with almost no new information in between, you would expect something impressive in court...but no, same quick questions devoid of any nuance and done. Still allowed OC to mop them around the court room. Finally, their customer service department does not care at all. After extensive attempts to mitigate this through them before any reviews or complaining, they blew us off entirely. They must figure theyve drained you enough financially that you will just give in, and sadly they are likely to win that argument more often than not. Do not use this firm-or at least Lelan Kirk. All they do is charge you money and more money. Mr. Kirk was supposed to represent my son--I paid the legal fees and was present with most all interactions with Mr. Kirk as well as having access to the legal notes for my son. Just to make it clear I know what I am talking about.... Mr. Kirk acted more on the behalf of the mother of my grandson, way more than he did for my son. My son received custody of my grandson due to CPS taking him away from his mother---yes, CPS. Mr. Kirk negotiated with the mother more than my son on what SHE wanted to happen, not what my son wanted to happen in the case! She got her wishes on visitation-she got her wishes on location.....We got nothing that we asked him to fight for. We (I) paid him and this firm over $10,000 for nothing. Mr. Kirk or the firm, even charged us $149.50 for making a mistake on the paperwork (their mistake) in spelling my name wrong as a supervisor of the supervised visitation set forth by CPS, for my grandson. Mr. Kirks mistake for not asking how it was spelled. But yet, we paid for his mistake. We could not get away from him and this firm fast enough. They only care about the money they can charge you---and trust me when I say----you get charged for EVERY thing and every minute of time! Do NOT use this firm! read more

I only gave 1 Star because you have to. If you do not have unlimited funds for their advertising budget DO NOT RETAIN Cordell and Cordell. My attorney left at a critical moment in my case when we close to an agreement. I was told that I would not be charged anything for getting the new attorney up to speed. I was given a free 30 min consult to discuss my case with my new attorney, and that was it. I was then DOUBLE BILLED for her time because I ended up having multiple conversations that I had already discussed with my previous attorney. Then the new attorney did not really do much to fight for me. (Read other reviews this is not the first time this has happened here.) When the new attorney took over I had about $1,300 in escrow and within a few weeks I owed them $1,600 more. Neither of my attorney's filed any court documents, my new attorney charged me billing time from getting the docs from the opposing counsel and she had technical issues figuring out how use the standard text documents attorneys use. So I was DOUBLE BILLED, neither attorney filed anything on my behalf to the court, and I had to pay for my attorney's technical support issues at over $325 an hour, with minor new input into the finial agreement. Oh and let me also throw in breaking of client attorney privilege with my first attorney. I was in negotiations on Alimony because my wife had all the money. I was under employed at the time and had a "new job possibility" that had only been verbally discussed. My attorney asked me what I was doing in my job search and I told her. Well, she ends up having a "professional conversation" with opposing counsel and tells her of this possibility. Well that set off a S*** storm at home. I did not have the job, I had not applied for it yet, and it was on discussed verbally. But then I had to hear about how I was going behind my wife's back and not telling her of any updates on my job search or possible job where I would be making considerable more. Really? It was cost me additional emotional grief that I did not have the capacity for. I even wrote a 5 page hand written complaint to Joseph E Cordell discussing my case sent certified signature required return receipt. I did not hear anything back from them. That is horrible customer service. I did not even get a courtesy call from anyone. Over all they are a big firm and can bring a lot of resources to bare if you have lots of money to spend. If you are a little guy with limited resources DO NOT RETAIN Cordell and Cordell. DO NOT fall for their free large group meetings on divorce like I did. I retained Cordell & Cordell to represent me in a custody battle with my ex, based on their website and radio advertisements; they present themselves as specialists in helping fathers in a legal system skewed in favor of mothers. First, they pulled a classic bait & switch on me: The consultation was with a highly experienced attorney; when I retained them, however, I was assigned an inexperienced lawyer. Their hourly rate didn't go down at all, though - she was still $250/hr. Second, the retainer fee was $2,500. That's a LOT of money (for me, anyhow). I asked for a very, very simple thing - all I wanted for that $2,500 was an agreed-upon visitation schedule for my child with my ex. $2,500 wasn't enough to pursue full-on custody, but I was willing to settle for a set, agreed-upon visitation schedule. The agreement was, I would get a court date with a prepared attorney to argue (and, presumably, win) that visitation schedule. Third: What the attorney did with my retainer: Nothing. No court date. No communication with my ex's attorney. The Cordell & Cordell lawyer burned through my entire retainer in TWO DAYS, then sent me a bill for another $2,500. The original $2,500 took almost a YEAR to save up. We agreed I would get a court date to settle a visitation schedule for my child; instead, I got completely screwed by this person. Multiple attempts to file a complaint with Cordell & Cordell's management about the mis-use of my retainer and the complete lack of tangible results based on the agreed-upon usage of the retainer went unresolved. This whole process felt like I was buying a car from a dealership. During my initial consult, the attorneys representing the firm we're men advocating for Father's rights. They answered my questions well and were very courteous. Once I agreed to retain them, I was immediately switched to a completely different team comprised of women, including my TRO attorney Christine Dolan. She was unempathetic towards my case and situation and also made me feel very uncomfortable with her lack of sensitivity to this matter. Her comments offended me when she began to relate her feelings to the Plaintiff's (ex-wife) in the matter. This was a total bait and switch tactic used in many industries. I was convinced by salesmen and then switched to people that had no sympathy for a client that is going through one of the worst moments in my life. I am disgusted at the amount of money I paid this firm for nothing to happen in the end. No trial. No in person meetings. Overcharged on the invoices, and closed my account in worse shape than when I retained Cordell and Cordell. It was clear my attorney had zero experience with foreigners. I had to explain in detail what the app Whatsapp is about. Don't expect to be in touch with the Men from the consultation and if they call you they will overcharge you for the amount of time you are on the phone. They could call for a mistake on their end and still charge you for the phone call explanation. They may all give their phone numbers and tell you to call whenever you want, but that will come at a hefty price. In the beginning don't expect much attention to your matter, this is a big law firm with many clients and cases and only give you undivided attention the closer you get to your trial. Yet, they will charge you from the beginning as if they give you undivided attention from the beginning. All these fine points of law that was going to totally hem the other side in and we were going to at least get what was fair. I could write another book about how many time's I was charged for writing up these court documents or that proceeding or meetings to go over strategies that were never implemented, and never had a prayer of being implemented. Docs that were prepared for mediation (when no mediator is ever going to use another law firms written order...totally against the whole spirit of mediation: AND what the MEDIATOR gets PAID TO DO...just one example). I have mixed feelings about this law firm, but ultimately, I would recommend them, particularly Jason Hopper. I hired Cordell after hearing about the firm through its radio advertisements. The first attorney I had (female) turned out to be a nightmare. She left Cordell, and I was assigned a second attorney (also female). The second attorney was more competent, but similarly combative and unprofessional at times. While the firm's motto is "a partner you can trust," I found that the first two attorneys I had were not "partners." They were (unexpectedly) emotional, not at all compassionate, and at times I felt like my case was simply a billing opportunity to them. No client should ever feel that way. I'm an attorney and know that first-hand. HOWEVER, when I complained to management (Joseph Cordell himself in MO), they were totally responsive and showed me that they cared about my concerns and valued me as the firm's client. I had concerns about fees, and again, the firm handled it appropriately. Because of a scheduling issue, Mr. Hopper jumped in my case and represented me through the conclusion. He did so with expertise, efficiency and a calmness that was missing from the other two attorneys. I retained this firm because of their advertisement as a firm for men. I am a 16 year victim of South Carolina's punitive permanent alimony and woman biased divorce laws. I paid a retainer of $1,800 after speaking with a Senior Attorney, and was then assigned a lower level, less experienced one for the same $250 per hour. Over the course of approximately six months, and no conversations with ANY managing partners, I was billed over 30 different occasions for anything from an e-mail to my attorney, to the office clerk updating my address, to my attorney having lunch and presumably a discussion of my case with a "partner". I paid over $7,500 for one hearing of 10 minutes, had maybe 3-4 conversations with my attorney, mostly to express my disappointment with their performance and lack of insight. After one particularly nasty call following the opposing attorneys blatant stall tactics, and my disgust, THEY asked to be removed from MY case for lack of trust after I paid them over $7,500. I was forced to find other counsel at the 11th hour. So let's just say, don't bet on the hype of being a men's law firm. Bet on getting billed ever other day for anywhere between $27.90 and $816.00. Bet on them being more interested in not agitating the opposing counsel. Bet on them not agitating the judge even when they are grossly unfair. I met with an attorney who was great, next thing I know, I was assigned to another attorney. Went through three attorneys with this firm for various reasons, before being assigned back to my original attorney. Always seemed to be a step behind. Also, it was as if they sided with my ex. Acted like I never had a chance, even though my ex moved out of state and left my daughter with me. Always had me worrying that I was going to lose. They always wanted me to agree with what opposition was purposing. Work was done on my case at times when nothing was happening. Consulting with other attorneys in the office for increased rates. I have never had an attorney have to consult with other attorneys before. Seems as if this firm is in business for one thing, to make money. Made numerous mistakes that cost me tens of thousands of dollars and time with my daughter. I went through a lot of unnecessary stress due to this which caused health issues. My divorces lasted a year. Spent double what I should have for half the results. Recommend using local attorneys who know the system. Do not make the same mistake I did! read more

I wish I would have checked this site before I signed on to Cordell and Cordell, but I loved their radio ads and thought they would be great for me! All of these negative reviews are EXACTLY what I experienced! They nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING and most are inflated charges that aren't even necessary! I paid 100's of dollars too much for an attorney who flat out told me, "I don't know much about VA laws, I'm from NY and used to practice traffic law." This was AFTER I signed on with their firm. (For a child custody and divorce case!) They assign you to a lawyer AFTER you meet with someone for your initial consultation! Their customer care center is a JOKE! They basically tell you "too bad." You get charged for letters and phone calls that are pointless and have NO bearing on your case. I'm not as eloquent as many of the reviews that I have read, so take a few minutes and read other's experiences! I can guarantee you will regret giving this company ANY money. read more

I agree emphatically with the other reviewers. I chose Cordell because my children were involved and I did not care about cost, I just wanted the best to protect them from an alienating mother. I was happy to pay the extravagant $2500 retainer. I was charged $300 for representation that made errors, forgot about key facts in the case, and had no sense of urgency or conviction. She had no coherent strategy or approach. At one point my ex was clearly in contempt but my lawyer failed to recommend filing for a contempt citation. I did not know that I had that option until later. She was so uninvolved that less than two weeks before the hearing she decided to withdraw on the basis of "irreconcilable differences" - and that was the least of her gaffes. To Cordell's credit, they did not allow her to, but I ended up with a worst case scenario with my children that was unnecessary and that I did not deserve. I was left with the impression that Cordell loads up their lawyers with so much work that they cannot be sufficiently involved in any one case - unless perhaps it is a bigger money maker than mine, and mine netted them in the range of $50K.
