After going to the Cornerstone a few times, I am still undecided on what to think. Good points: Great atmosphere. Great bar selection Good food presentation. Got the Ruben expecting a great sandwich as I have eaten there several times with great satisfaction. It came on a piece of wood with a napkin under it. I picked it up and noticed the napkin was saturated with grease and the sandwich half totally just slid apart and landed on the table. The corned beef was sliced about 1/2 inch thick (just one huge slice). The caper laden dressing oozed all over. The bottom piece of bread was so saturated with grease it disintegrated completely. My table guest were flabbergasted. I politely ate 1/2 of the mess with a fork and knife. Come on Cornerstone it's a Ruben you guys should have the best around!!! Once again Cornerstone delivers. Great food at good prices, well trained wait staff, and Mike the GM is very friendly and accommodating. As I told Mike last week- this is the best restaurant overall between Bethel, VT and Montpelier with the exception of Ariel's in Brookfield, which is a different experience. read more

We love the place, consistent food and service. Great atmosphere. The only problem is the noise level...please put in some noise dampening panels...esp in the fireplace room. It's near impossible to have a conversation without straining the ears and shouting (which adds to the problem). I think the tin on the ceilings makes it worse. We stopped in Barre on the way back to Portland after sightseeing all day. After a short wait, we seated ourselves at the bar. I ordered a water and my hubby ordered the Trout River Rainbow Red. Perfectly fresh and bright beer. Food - he got the turkey club and I got the Vermont burger. Holy wow those were some huge plates but the food was crazy satisfying. My burger was juicy and tender with a yummy aioli. So great. Aside from not being able to finish his huge sandwich, my hubby said it was really great, tender and flavorful. Great American pub!!!! Fabulous layout, lots of space with a decent sized bar. Walk in and everyone greets you. Crazy number of beers on tap, all listed between two chalkboards. Probably twenty in total! Most are local, or from New England. I went with a Stone IPA which was delicious! And I got the angus burger and that too was pretty darn good. Cooked perfectly with melted cheddar cheese, and just enough stuff that it wasn't messy to eat. My friend got a flatbread pizza which looked tasty also! We went on a Thursday around noon and it was fairly quiet. I'd like to come back and see how it is on a Friday night or when a game is on! Nice to have a cool spot like this in central Vermont with a lot to offer for pretty much any occasion. read more

Food is not very good, I've given this place quite a few times to redeem themselves. Steak tips chewy, sauces that don't taste well, dumplings that are hard and just not quality ingredients at all! With all the local foods available at the farms, they should utilize them. I have been here twice now and have not been entirely impressed. I ordered a burger the first time which was great but I found the taste may have come from the massive amount of grease in it. I literally had grease running down my arm. I thought the mason jars were a cute a touch and the setting is more intimate. But too expensive for me not to be satisfied with the food unfortunately. read more

The bf and I stopped by here for one last VT burger before heading back to Boston. So, appropriately, we both got the Vermont Burger which more than satisfied our meaty needs. The burgers were juicy and tasty and...well what else do you really need in a burger. We paid the $1 extra for a side salad which I think is a little silly but, oh well, it's a dollar. I went with a group of 6 on a Friday night, so this review is based on that. I totally understand longer waiting times for larger parties and even more so on a Friday night, but we waited about 45 minutes just to get our drinks we ordered. I got the Green Mountain Mule which was seriously disappointing. Why make a ginger syrup and add to (very, very flat) tonic water? Ginger beer is honestly the only way to make a good Moscow Mule. Our waitress definitely had too many tables to handle so we didn't see much of her. There was also a bit of a mix-up and one of six of our party members got their food about 10 minutes before the rest of us. As far as food goes, I got the Roasted Red & Golden Beet salad, which was very lacking in beets. I also got the fried calamari which was not too bad. For dessert, I split a cheesecake with strawberry sauce. It was just okay, nothing special. I wouldn't recommend this place and I won't be going back. read more

Amazing. I've never had anything disappointing here. Fish n chips (best tartar sauce ever!), calamari, swordfish tacos, salads, pork burgers - all are great. I highly recommend visiting on a Tuesday night when you can get $5 house or black bean burgers (my favorite) along w their hand cut fries. Citizen Cider on tap sweetens the deal, along with a long list of draft beers. The desert jars made by the local culinary program are delectable as well. read more

We went by not knowing if they were open or not. What a great surprise. We had to wait as we didn't call ahead for the table, but it was a very pleasant wait, met some nice people. While we were waiting they took great care of us and got us a couple Margarita's from the bar. Note I'm using a capital, M, they rock, generous servings in a mason jar glass and they tasted great. We split a flat bread for appetizer, which really could have been a light meal for us. The potatoes, scallions and bacon toppings were really good, we ordered ours without the ranch dressing. My girlfriend had the "beer can" chicken. Please don't let the folksy name turn you away. This is very similar to the chicken I had at the Common Man, a high end restaurant one of the owners previously owned. It still amazes me, I tasted it, it's like I've never had chicken before, it's amazing. Makes me wonder why I've never had chicken like this in my entire life, and I've eaten more than my share of chicken, even prepare via beer cans, but nothing this good. Dinners were always excellent at his old restaurant and I suspect they will continue here. We went there steady for years. Personally I couldn't resist trying the Poutin, as I don't get to have it much. It was great, presentation was excellent, I won't get into the details, as it was fun and a bit unexpected. The atmosphere is a class act. Very professional, but casual. It's interesting, you would feel comfortable just having a beer, or if you are looking for some very nice dining, you'll be in heaven here. The menu reflects the same along with the mix of people. We've been out in Burlington, Stowe, Sugarbush Valley and there are very few restaurants that can compete..... its a great bonus for the Barre Montpelier area, truly a few steps up. We loved it, we'll be back. I'd be shocked if someone didn't like what was done here. It's so great to see a new business thriving, you can tell they really did their homework and know what they are doing. We'll be back, no doubt. read more

Wow! Delicious food! Everything on the menu tempted me. Hope to get back sometime to try a duck burger, fried chicken sandwich, or some specials. But the Bahn Mi pork burger I had was tasty with the right mix of flavors from hoisin, siracha mayo, and daikon slaw. My oldest had a good turkey burger w cranberry chutney. My husband's haddock in his fish and chips was 12" long and extremely flaky, not greasy at all. The prize was my other two who got bbq pizzas with andouille, pork shank, and bacon that were to die for! Thank goodness they let me taste it. The wait staff was friendly and though a pub too it was comfortable, modern, and family friendly for older kids. Oh and she my son asked for honey mustard for his salad, I'm sure that it wasn't a regular item but the chef made it for him. read more

Went to dinner tonight with some friends (7/24/18). This is the first time I've been here ... and it'll be the last! It was $5 burger night and the place was packed (we didn't know this prior to going). They didn't have enough staff working. It took FOREVER to get our food. We had to hunt down our waitress just to get the check because she forgot about our table. She didn't ask how we wanted the check split and sure as hell didn't give us time to say we wanted it split 5 ways. When she came back with 1 check we asked her to split it 5 ways and she got an attitude. "Fine but its going to take a while." Well, ask 1st and save yourself the time to have to go back and fix it!! She comes back and gives us our checks. THEY'RE STILL WRONG! She split the appetizers between all of us when only 2 people ordered and ate them. WHO does that?!?! WHY would you do that?? I ordered the pub burger which was on the $5 burger night special but yet it was on my bill as $8.50! At this point we had been there almost 2hrs and just wanted out of the damn place. I wasn't about to wait who knows HOW LONG to have her fix her mistake AGAIN. My bill should've only been $11-$12 but came out to $19! I was so irritated I didn't give a tip! I understand it was busy but that's no excuse to give piss poor service. Normally I'd feel bad for not tipping but I'm sorry when you're a waiter/waitress I feel you need to earn/work for your tip!!!!! She never came back once our food was brought to us either. Absolutely amazing. I live in Massachusetts where there is a lot of rushing and loudness and this was very relaxing. The vibe from the environment, people, and building was amazing to be around. Hired the food trailer to cater my wedding this past Saturday and it was a huge hit! They were easy to work with to customize a menu that fit both my husband and my personalities and went above and beyond making sure everything was perfect on the day of. People are still giving me compliments on how cool it was having a food trailer at our wedding and how awesome the food was as well! read more

Our foursome made the mistake of going to the Cornerstone on their opening Saturday night. Don't get me wrong... the food was very good, the wait staff was cheerful and attentive, the kitchen kept up with the overflow crowd, and the decor was very well done. The hardwood floors, brick pillars, stamped metal ceiling and cream colored walls make for a very good looking restaurant; unfortunately, all those hard surfaces also made for an exceedingly, painfully, unbearably loud dining experience. After about 30 minutes, we gave up trying to hear one another and just beat a hasty retreat to give our poor ears a chance to recover. I'd be happy to go again to the Cornerstone, but I'll wait for the initial, new-restaurant rush to pass, then maybe try a Tuesday or Wednesday--early in the evening! read more

I made my first and last visit to this place tonight, arriving at 9.10 pm after a concert just across the street. What restaurant worth its salt closes its kitchen at 9 pm on a Saturday night? Especially when there are events going on in town that finish after 9 pm, potentially bringing business into the place and people who want to EAT! It isn't hard to check up what's going on in town and react accordingly guys! Seems you can drink at this place until "the last person leaves" (so my server told me) but there is NOTHING to eat - no chips, peanuts, or popcorn. It's REALLY irresponsible to be serving alcohol until the wee hours with no food to mitigate its effects. I'm not even talking about keeping the kitchen open - although you'd make a lot more money if you just kept one guy in the kitchen making pub food/ snacks (fries, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks etc.) or dishing up pricy desserts. Just cold dry food that a bar tender could produce from under the counter would make all the difference. Actually, you've some nerve to call yourselves a "pub" - no self respecting pub in England would serve drinks w/o having crisps (potato chips), peanuts, pork pies, scotch eggs, and sandwiches for sale behind the bar - even after the kitchen had closed. As for the service: I have no issue w/ our server (really, how hard is it to bring a screw top bottle of wine and 3 glasses?). She apologized that we had to wait a bit for the wine to come - she said that was because she'd had a "fight" w/ the bar tender. That didn't seem very professional. But she was young and she was polite so I left her a tip in excess of 20% of the cost of the bottle of wine. Not bad for about 2 minutes work. When we arrived there was no one at the hostess station so we waited a few minutes hoping someone would show up. Eventually someone did and she announced that the kitchen was closed. We asked if we could have a drink and she seated us at a table next to the bar. While we were waiting for our bottle of wine to show up a couple arrived who had been at the same concert as us. They waited and waited but no one came to the front of the house to tell them where they could sit. Eventually the couple left in disgust. We noticed that the hostess who had seated us was sitting at the bar eating and several wait staff were lounging around at the end of the bar w/o paying any attention to the hostess station. This negligence on the part of your staff could prove costly since the person they couldn't be bothered to seat was the editor of a local newspaper. In the restaurant business word of mouth is everything and I imagine he won't have a good word to say. I told my friend (had to YELL at her actually) that I was glad I wasn't eating here and spending a bundle of money b/c the noise level was so loud and so discordant that it was making me anxious! I felt sure that if I were eating a meal I would suffer from indigestion. In addition to the clatter of fractious conversation (if "conversation" could describe the shouting and screeching of bar patrons) there were television screens over the bar blasting out sound in addition to a noisy - but totally uninteresting - musical soundtrack. I want to be fair here. I didn't have the opportunity to try out the food but I would have liked to b/c I've heard good reports in that area. Probably if I'd arrived earlier w/ the intention to have dinner I could have been seated away from the bar and the TV and the music and all the noise - and the earlier patrons who had come for dinner most likely wouldn't have been the screeching 20 somethings who populated the bar area when I was there. Bottom line is, there's decent food to be had at plenty of places. Customer service is EVERYTHING and I really wasn't happy w/ the experience I had at this establishment. I won't be back and you can be sure I will let my friends, coworkers, and business associates know why. Nuff said! read more

I've been here twice. The first time was within the first few months of opening, and I had a good, not great, experience. We recently went again, and it was horrible. Will never return, nor will I recommend to anyone! It was so loud I could not hear my boyfriend sitting across from me, but instead could hear the person from the table behind me since we were so close together. The service was poor and inattentive. We had to remind the waitress twice about our drinks. We both got steak, which took over an hour to get to us, and both were extremely overcooked and tough, my partner who has worked in a restaurant said it tasted like they had been waiting under a heat lamp for a while. For the price we paid, I expect a lot better. read more

Really excellent home style food. My group ordered French fries Poutine-Outstanding served in black crockpot to hold heat absolutely delicious. Mac and Cheese-Huge portion excellent quality cheese used. Shepard's Pie was delicious no flakey crust also served in Black crockpot. Bacon Cheese Hamburger was spot on, no frozen beef here, Varied beer list looks like over 30 different shown on blackboard. I had a few pints of Lawson's various varieties all very good. Waitstaff was efficient but not overly friendly. For me food is all that matters. Don't miss this place you won't be disappointed. read more

My two kids and I stopped in for an impromptu dinner out on a busy Saturday evening. We were seated relatively quickly and our server was so great with the kids. I encourage my 9 & 4 year old to order for themselves, which often leads to confused servers looking to me to interpret or confirm. Our server was fantastic! She listened to each child, made eye contact with them, gave them plenty of time to complete their orders before double checking with me that she had it straight. And this isn't easy since they both had modifications to menu items in order to accommodate their respective food sensitivities (corn, gluten, dairy). The meals (kids sliders, pub burger, sweet potato fries, regular fries, side salad and pork burger ) came relatively quickly, and when my oldest noticed corn on his salad our server was apologetic and made no issue or delay in replacing it. The food was delicious the portions ample. I especially appreciated the beautiful plating. The ambience is a nice combination of relaxed and casual with a touch of sophistication. The bathrooms were clean. My kids were so happy with how they were treated that they were especially well behaved. I don't think most restaurants realize how big of a deal this is. We will certainly go back if we were in town again at dinner time! read more

Cornerstone offers good food and a solid beer selection. They usually have 15-20 beers on tap, many of which are microbrews. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the barely edible Caesar dressing I've had on my side salads. All other food has been quite satisfying! I stumbled on it while searching on yelp and I must say I'm really glad that I came to this place. The ambience is nice, the food is really good and the staff is just super friendly and nice -perfect combo. I tried the southwest chicken with a glass of Pinot Grigio. It was really good. I'm not much of a beer drinker but they had a lot of beer options and read a lot of accolades about their beer. So do give it a try if you are a beer connoisseur. Overall a great place. Definitely recommend it :) read more
