It's the people of the church that make the difference. The sanctuary is unique with its full wall of window facing West to the Albemarle Sound. It's rare not to see wildlife as you worship. My daughter has been the most active attending VBS as well as teaching VBS when she became old enough. The congregation is extremely active in the community and even third world countries where they sponsor children. If your looking for a new church home or just a vacation church home you will feel very welcome attending one of the three services at Duck.

Pretty church, but for some reason I got the Mass time wrong. I don't remember how that happened,…read morebut I was going for the first Sunday Mass, which I thought was at 7AM. It wasn't. First Mass on Sunday is at 9AM. For other Mass times, see my picture. So now I'm left with a decision. I can wait 2 hours, I can skip Mass (which would not bode well with my wife), or I can see if there is another Catholic Church nearby. Turns out there is another Church. Holy Trinity by the Sea is 12.6 miles away, and a 20 minute drive. So rather than hanging out in the parking lot (the church doors were still locked at 6:45 AM), I decided to see more of the OBX and drive down to Nags Head. I always think of going to church sort of like going to McDonald's. You expect an almost total…read moreuniformity where everyone is doing the same thing everywhere but every now and then you can get surprised by what you experience when you go somewhere different. Let me just start by saying that unlike a lot of churches Holy Redeemer is not exactly much of a looker. It looks like it was built at some point within the last thirty years where buildings became more about functionality then about some type of grand outward appearance. The inside is very nice with everything being in a semi-circle format versus the more traditional rectangular format. The mass itself was fantastic. Father Walsh is very warm and personable and does something that I can't say I've seen anywhere else. Before each reading and The Gospel he gets up and explains the important points of what is about to be read. Although it is weird to see that neither Father nor anyone else bow when crossing in front of the altar or that they still use the version of The Creed that refers to Jesus descending into Hell. Can't say I've heard that version is a looong time. Musically there was a small choir and the songs were played some on the organ and some on piano. Depending where you are at in OBX this is going to be your only place to get your Jesus on while on vacation. If you're in the extreme southern half there is another parish all the way down in Hatteras but aside of that it's either Kitty Hawk or Nags Head or hike it out to Elizabeth City. Overall everything was very nice and with the Mass being well attended along with a great homily from Father Walsh. The territory is impressive too and the park that is now there is lovely. It's so great that places like that get preserved and shared. We truly enjoyed our experience! Definitely worth a visit!

I have to say, we were church hunting when we moved from V.B…read more and haven't left. Paster James is the most God loving man that has a heart of gold. I've learned so much from his sermons, as he has a way of joy he brings every Sunday morning and night. The Wednesday night study is great. Everyone is dressed relaxed, it's a come as you are church. Ladies Bible study is Tuesday mornings in the fall, a small group of ladies. You don't have to be a member to attend. The small church is made up of volunteers, Always seeking people to lend a helping hand. The Bible states tithing 10%. That's between you and God. The preacher preaches from the Bible. Many churches have missionary work they give to and special givings around the holidays, just like any other church I have attended over the years. We can't say enough how we love the church and the people.

If you have an idea that might make the Church a little more friendly... for example a "Welcome Center" or Changing the Sign in the front regularly, they have to be in "Charge" it seems they have many Control issues..... I have even watched the Preacher's Wife remove her Heels to stand flat footed beside him in the Pew and if you donate your time to Paint or help out fixing something they expect you to buy the materials.... all while expecting your 'tithe" also. It is a SHAME that some Churches only value their Members based on how much it will benefit them, I really don't think Jesus had that in mind.
