Situated near the town centre the theatre is easy to find with parking available right next to the building. It is only 5 minutes from the M6 so within easy reach of those coming from outside the town. The theatre is your typical two storey theatre with tiered seating and the lack of leg-room you would expect from a theatre of a similar age, but in everything it is pleasant enough, especially the added bonus of the half time ice cream seller. If I remember rightly, this is the oldest provincial theatre in the UK, so worth a visit just for the history. An enjoyable night out indeed.

"Bars" Great place to meet up with friends and have a nice social evening, sometimes have bands…read moreplaying but with 3 bars to choose from you'll always find one you like. "Cinema" Good but only 3 screens. Sometimes will show more arty type movies instead of mainstream. Try to avoid the Theatre screen as the chairs are uncomfortable and very little leg room :-( "Food" I've only eaten here once and it was good, most of my friends would recommend it, so a big thumbs up from here.

And the Dukes has a fine program of arthouse and independent film that just isn't available anywhere else locally. However they do show popular films and have great Sing a Long nights where they show the Sound of Music etc. This cinema isn't about how much popcorn and coke you can ram down your face, it is about watching good films amongst likeminded people. Add to that the fact you can get a drink from the bar and take it in with you and what more could you want. Support this place and other local businesses. The Dukes is one of the things that makes Lancaster a decent place to live in

The new site for the Laurel and Hardy Museum was opened on…read more April 18th 2009, at what was the Roxy Cinema behind the Coronation Hall. Entry is £4 Adults, Children under 12, OAPS, and Student Union members are £3 and if you are 2 adults & 2 children under 12 you can have a Family ticket for £8. The new venue is not yet wheelchair acessable, but they are working on it. I will let you know when this is finished. I will add photos of the new venue soon.

Staffed by one of the Sons of the Desert, this is a perfect day out for parents and brats. A real Utopia located in Ulverston, the museum is guaranteed to leave 'em laughing. This big business has a treasure trove of delights, from Hollywood artefacts to personal letters. The cinema is the finishing touch, with a non-stop series of films. Unaccustomed as we are to see the films on the tv these days, this is a double whoopee for fans. Hats off to the manager. So, pack up your troubles and head for them thar hills. For more the niche films, go to the Duke playhouse/cinema, as it is a great alternative. As a student I get discounted tickets all the time, so I can't comment on the high prices of normal times at prime times, but 90% of the time, the Vue gives out more off coupons on your visit for your next visit within the next month. This means if you visit regularly you'll only ever pay full price once or twice, if you plan your visits carefully. The choice of films is decent enough for a 6-screen cinema, and the seating in all of the screens is good. The projection quality is as expected for a non-digital projection, but hopefully within the next few years we might see a screen or two converted to digital (fingers-crossed). The trailers before each film aren't too long, in my opinion, usual around 5 or 6 trailers, and a few preceding adverts. The screen is a moderate size, not overly large or particularly small. This means you won't feel consumed by the large screen if you sit at the front of the standard rows, nor squinting if your at the top (back) row. The refreshments are over-priced, but that is no different to any other chain. The staff are very very good, and I've never had an issue with any of them in the 3 years I've been coming to the cinema. Orange 241 offers are valid here, and can be used for student tickets too, unlike some chains. Finally, the accessibility within the cinema is good, with good ramps and lifts where appropriate. Which is always a good sign for and persons with mobility issues. And the screen always have 2-3 gaps for wheelchairs in the front row. Note: The entrance to the cinema is slightly hidden from the public. It is found down an alleyway, which can be found next to where Woolworths used to be (aka opposite HMV and Starbucks), or from the other side; next to The Litten Tree pub.

The Coach House really stood out in my mind after my recent trip to Ulverston - not so much for the…read morefood, but the concept behind the place. Situated next to a sort of walled allotment, it's all very much 'grow your own,' and you can even buy potted herbs and vegetables from a table (complete with honesty box) from outside the cafe. Inside there is plenty of seating and walls adorned with art from local artists which is available to buy. The menu is fairly simple - jacket potatoes, sandwiches, (a rather impressive looking) afternoon tea. I opted for a pesto and roasted vegetable panini with a portion of fries. The panini itself was tasty, though not bursting with flavour, and the fries a little greasy. For a few pounds it was a tasty lunch that hit the spot and kept me going until dinner. A great place if you're in the area and need a quick bite, especially those with children. Very family friendly.

The Royalty is a wee local cinema in Windermere, and seems like a quirky little place. Being a city…read moregirl, I'm normally at the huge multi-plexes, which are pretty one dimensional and soul-less, so I found it a nice experience, as The Royalty has a bit more character about it. We went in the main entrance. There's an old-fashioned ticket seller's booth, but no-one was about. A queue formed, and we all waited and shuffled our feet. Around the foyer, there's a few pictures from ye olde cinema days which were interesting to look at. After a few minutes, an employee appeared on the balcony, and called down to us that the movie was showing on the other screen. Clearly we were a bunch of dummies, although perhaps a sign might have been helpful for customers. To get to the other screen, you leave that bit of the building, walk down the outside of the building and into the other entrance, which we all duly did. In that building, there's another booth, and you get old fashioned paper tickets, which pleased me greatly, for reasons I'm not sure about. You can also buy confectionery. The screen is then straight next to it so no traipsing about. Ideal. The screen room (is that what it's called?) had a bit of a strange feature. It seemed to me that the seats were on a slope. Pretty standard you might say. But sloping the wrong way! Resulting in the seats at the back being lower down than the front. Maybe it was an optical illusion but that's how it seemed to me. There were the usual trailers, and amusing local adverts. Then a guy came out with an old-fashioned ice cream tray round his neck. I really wasn't expecting that! The only thing missing was an advert for Wrestler's hotdogs and a declaration that the non-smoking seats were at the side. Remember that - when you could smoke in a cinema? The usual palaver with the curtains. Lovely gold shiny ones I noticed. Then the movie began. The final quirk that I noticed is that they have put a litter bin right in the middle of the aisle. And people actually used it during the movie. So occasionally, as we were unwittingly sat right next to it, we'd get disturbed by someone thudding litter into it. Bit strange. But also, if you had to evacuate the cinema, it's totally in the way! In summary, a reasonable wee cinema, with some funny little quirks to keep us city girls enthralled.
