Located in the quiet yet centrally located San Niccolo neighborhood, the entire building with several apartments is stunning, The entrance, common rooms and gardens highlight the historic nature of the building but the apartments carefully integrate every modern comfort and convenience with the original architectural features and a nod to contemporary features the perfectly merge the past and the present. Our apartment Arno was a two level space with a living room- kitchenette combination, comfy couch and chairs, big screen TV and a downstairs bathroom with shower. Up a spiral staircase was a large loft bedroom with tons of closet space and another full bath. Solid wi-fi throughout. Our host, Fredrico with the friendly young staff answered questions and made recommendations for less-traveled sights and neighborhood restaurants with superb meals at reasonable prices. The breakfast room offered a chance to compare notes with other guests over pastries, coffee and teas. There is an unexpected shoe showcase and shop just in case you need some comfortable new shoes in the convenience of your hotel. And pick up the complimentary Tuscan Life magazine at the hotel for photos, articles and recipes about the region. Their website lists a range of special events so you might check that out too.

Check in was very easy and we were shown to our room on the second floor. This place is large with a lot of stairs, but finding your way around is easy if you follow the signs. The actual room has every convenience you would need, and our room had a sitting balcony that overlooked a beautiful wooded area. But, the best part of the hotel? The dining area in the back. Incredible vistas and views that will take your breath away. Absolutely fantastic panoramas of grape and olive fields. Just phenomenal. My wife and I commented that we could sit in the outdoor dining area all day and be happy. The birds singing all day was another added bonus. Certainly consider staying here if you are visiting the region. We will be back.

We had heard great reviews about the restaurant- and we were able to get in the same day for lunch, despite no reservations. I ordered the homemade tagliatelle with beef ragu- the noodles were fresh and cooked to perfection, the beef ragu sauce had a good amount of meat, and was very flavorful. The best part about the restaurant is how FRESH everything is- you sit next to a garden and will actually see the chef go down and pick out fresh basil, kale, etc. for dishes on the menu. The tour itself was well organized, but seemed a little less personal than others I've been on (somewhat expected from larger wineries). I also found the 3 wines (Chianti) in the tasting to be "good", but not great. Eat beforehand because you get VERY few snacks that will not fill you up. The winery was HUGE and easy to see why they host weddings here- it was absolutely gorgeous and the landscaping was breath-taking. The views are outstanding and you won't be able to take enough pictures. You get a tour around the buildings, the room with the wine-making equipment, the wine barrels, and the garden- but you will not enter the vineyard. They gave a great little description of the history of the vineyard and the Villa (they have the official records to actually date the establishment), and I found it very interesting.

The villa itself has around 6 beautiful rooms upstairs with a lounge and entrance on the ground floor which also doubles as the check-in counter and gift shop (selling local artisanal goods.). The grounds have lots of space to relax- like hammocks, lounge chairs and of course, a sizable pool (with a proper deep end) to cool off under the summer sun. But theres more. Walk away from the pool towards the end of the hill top upon which this villa sits on and you'll be treated to a very quiet scenic sitting area where you can reflect, read, meditate or just stare off into the hills (see pic.) Though the villa is close to the town centre which has great dining options- DO NOT MISS OUT on having dinner at least once at the villa itself. Why? Because the couple who own and operate the villa make dinner themselves using some of the ingredients grown on the property. Literally you can order a pasta dish and they will walk over to the garden and pick the herbs then walk to the kitchen. You can't get anymore farm to table than that! Breakfast is equally as amazing. They will make eggs cooked to order and put an assortment of cheeses, fruits, pastries (which are made fresh everyday in the kitchen and rival anything you're ever going to eat in Paris.) About the owners- very nice and very hospitable couple. Its just the two of them who run this accommodation. They check you in. They cook and serve breakfast and dinner. They do it all. I've lived in Dubai for years and people often rave about the level of service in 5* hotels in that region...but no. The bath products were amazing, loved the LED lights in the shower and I loved how we had complimentary turndown service with chocolates. We spent a day at the pool which was very relaxing! We ended our pool day in the spa where we were able to use the sauna, steamroom, and jacuzzi. The hotel had a gorgeous outdoor pool, but for the cooler months there's also an indoor pool. The hotel's morning breakfast was amazing! They had everything from sweet waffles, pancakes, croissants to cheeses and meats, salmon, bacon and eggs, not to mention fresh fruit and yogurt bar. They also have many restaurants, including La Terrazza Restaurant and Il Pievano. Il Pievano has light dishes and is Michelin-starred / rated, while La Terrazza is your more casual dining also where breakfast was served every morning.

Gabriel gave us interesting information about the Castle, which was built in the 11th century by Benedict monks! He showed us interesting things such as a hidden room where people can spy into the dining room through a hole in a painting, an underground tunnel, and a theater with its original backdrop from 1742. Don't forget to take a few pictures at the giant bench which is a few minutes' walk away. The view is gorgeous and the grounds are well maintained. For the tasting portion, we really enjoy the high quality of wine. Gabriel was also nice enough to let us sample a few other wines beyond the ones included in tasting, such as the dessert wine and the whites. Quite a few of us bought some bottles to take home. There are plenty of wineries in the area and we had visited quite a few of them during our three weeks in Tuscany. This is definitely one of the better ones, for the castle's history, the view, and the quality of wine.

That was okay since our group had our dinners in a separate private dining area. The grounds were nice although the hotel is not in walking distance of anything -- that is unless you want to try walking along very narrow, winding roads. Internet worked most of the time but was out for one evening. Our bathroom and shower were fine but there was no fan or way to vent out steam so the mirrors fog up easily. Some of our group drank in the little bar area nightly but we already had plenty of wine during our tours.

After the second night we demanded to change rooms, as did our friends. It was Fn' HOT in the room. You have no control over the AC. You must call the front desk. They then turn the fan on to max, but instead of cooler, it gets warmer. They have a high tech system. They even showed me, I had the hottest room in the hotel and I was the only person with the fan at max. Clearly the central AC system for the entire hotel was shut off because they are cheap mofos. They actually have the nerve to try to convince you that 24c is cool and that you're wrong. The breakfast buffet is bland and boring. You're sick of it after 2 visits. The toilets don't work well either. Between our 2 rooms and our friends 2 rooms not one of these toilets could flush a kleenex without many attempts. The Turkish hot tub is dirty and oily. Who needs this aggravation? Not at these prices. Find somewhere else. Trust me.
