The Tweed Museum of Art is ensconced within nondescript student center buildings on the UMD campus…read more Keep your expectations in check because the two floors that it occupies -- with its linoleum floors and carpeting -- feel more like a registrar's office. If there were no paintings on the walls, you would not think this a gallery space. There is not a lot on display so spending longer than an hour here would be unlikely. One painting floored me. On the second floor near some bookshelves and a few desk chairs sits Gilbert Davis Munger's large-scale painting, 'Niagara Falls Showing the Canadian and American Views', from 1903. There is an almost endless stream of landscape paintings featuring Niagara Falls scattered in museums across the country and this is one of the best that I've seen. The grand size of the painting made me feel like I was standing at the base of the Falls. If I saw nothing else here, I would have still left happy. There are old master paintings from Mr. Tweed's collection on display in addition to various prints and lithographs. There are also some contemporary items, including Naomi Bebo's 'Beaded Mask', a 2010 work featuring beads and deer hide on an Iraqi gas mask. The most elegant item on display is a high heel shoe covered in birch bark by Cynthia Holmes. Titled 'Primal Donna', it's a modern day advancement on old wooden clogs.

A very interesting FREE museum that you could spend easily an hour or more reading all of the…read moredisplays and watching videos. Given the steamy weather the AC was very welcomed. The staff was friendly and kept everyone informed of the current schedule of the big ships coming and going. They made announcements outside too when one of the ships was preparing to leave. Watching one of these big ships pass under the lift bridge is quite the sight. Definitely worth seeing if you are lucky enough to be here at that time. Parking nearby is pricey since they minimum is three hours for $8.

Absolutely disgusted by the way this place has handled something that could have easily been…read moreresolved or at the very least, they could have taken responsibility for. Among a few other completely ridiculous mishaps in which the decc was responsible for the day of the wedding as well as during the wedding pertaining to prime rib that was completely uncooked... the worst of it all is that unknown to the bride and groom, a family member safely placed all gifts under the gift table... resulting in every gift being left behind after the wedding reception. The decc staff has placed blame on the bride and groom as well as the rest of the family/guests. They have not taken accountability at all whatsoever, which is very concerning being there is clearly a very dishonest thief working for them. The decc has completely ignored and disregarded all contact from the bride after the initial conversation where they proceeded to place blame elsewhere, extremely unprofessional. This place is completely ridiculous and I would not recommend for any reason. Will be sharing this experience with as many people as we can reach in hopes of saving others from having a horrible experience.
