So, what did I do? I grabbed my kid and my phone, dialed 911, and ran the f*#& outta there! The 911 dispatcher sent the call to the Fire Department. As I was waiting on my front lawn, I started to get nervous. I kept checking my kid, but he seemed fine. I kept checking my own pulse, but it was racing from the sprint I just ran and the anxiety taking over. I knew carbon monoxide was odorless and colorless. Had we been breathing in that stuff for hours? For days? Was my new headache and nausea from the killer fumes? Exactly when was I going to pass out and/or die? All the horrible scenarios raced through my head and I started to prepare myself for the worst. Within minutes, the fire department rolled up. No sirens. No excitement. Just 4 burly firemen jumped out and casually went inside. I waited outside, anxious to hear just how bad it was. About a minute later, one of the guys came out and told me to come inside. "Ma'am", he said, "your alarm battery is dead, that's why the alarm went off". WTF? No regular warning? No beeping, like in normal smoke detectors? Just a crazy robot voice telling me to leave the premises or I might die!!! I apologized to the 4 firemen, but they were very cool about it. They even changed my batteries for me. I kidded that I know who to call the next time I need some batteries changed, but I don't think they appreciated the joke. They played with my kid until one of their badges poked him and he started to cry. Then they gave my kid a fireman sticker and took off. The Costa Mesa Fire Department. Good people who are there to fight fires and save lives. Just don't call them when you need to change a battery.

In Los Angeles, LAFD always answered requests for neighborhood assist. Badge 107 replied "we are not LAFD we don't do neighborhood assist". That means Costa Mesa Fire Department does not care if there are members within their community who are disabled and in need of help and completely defeseless. They DO NOT CARE to help disabled. The attitude of badge 107 made it clear he considered disabled people and helping disabled people to be beneath him and a completely worthless task. he refused to give his name and only gave his badge number but I would like to find out who this man is and teach him that disabled citizens are people too!

They keep our city 'one that many call home, and many visit from around the world" SAFE!!! And of course, how can we post a review without, stating that those summer uniforms are the best!!!!, Who doesn't love those uniforms. Yet on a serious note. I agree with the poster below... most of the officers here are amazing, yet there are a handful, that clearly don't do the department any justice. My only complaint (as silly as it is), is their Facebook page. It's not engaging with others. It's cold and not welcoming. I also follow the Huntington Beach PD on my facebook, and there is such a huge difference in the way they (HB) interacts with their neighborhood (via facebook). I really think Newport Beach, needs to take a page from HB. To become neighborhood friendly and not so standoff'ish, this would only benefit the department and our beautiful city. That's it, that's really all I wanted to say. STAY SAFE out there, these are crazy times.

When I was in 4th grade my class was doing a project. The project was that we needed to do one…read morerandom act of kindness. My random act of kindness was to make(with my mom) a home cooked, two day brewed roast for the fire department. My mom had come up with the idea because she figured that they had such long shifts, they didn't get to have home cooked meals very often. So we first started with home baked cookies, I was too nervous to start with a roast as I was afraid the firefighters wouldn't like it. They were OVER the moon for the cookies. So we came back and brought them a pot roast in my moms crock pot and told them to give us a call and we'll pick up the crock pot when they've finished eating and such. Coincidently, I had a fire start in my trash can in my drive away about a week later and they had responded to put it out. So then, they had known my address. Once they realized it was the food people's house, they did something unimaginable. After putting out the fire in my trash can, they left. They left my house and went to the store and purchased flowers, a teddy bear and a thank you note (and also went to the station to get the crock pot lol). They pulled up to my house and gave me all these gifts because they appreciated my 4th grade self, bringing them a home cooked meal. I'm 21 years old now, I live in Monterey and I quite literally think of that day, almost every single day of my life. The gentlemen that let me sit in the drivers seat of the fire truck, the flowers, the little white lamb stuffed animal- everything has made such a positive impact in my life. I don't think the men that had participated in that event will ever see this, but if by some luck they do I want them to know I think of it everyday and that they are the reason I am in the career field I'm in now. Firefighters are usually the sweetest, however the kind acts those men made just because I brought them a roast and cookies, will forever make me smile.

Every kid got a fire hat, and some of the vendors had booths of freebies too. We went on a fire station tour, got to see the chief and captains rooms, along with their kitchen and dining area. Witnessed a fire saving demonstration with real fire!! They also did a car door extraction from a fake car crash on site. Lots to learn. We toured the rescue boat too. Wow, fun times for the kids to explore. Lastly; our kid got to be a Junior fire fighter by doing their obstacle course of pulling rope, carrying hose, walking over a tiny staircase, hammering to get Captain status, and actually using a real water hose to save fake fires, carrying a heavy fake person to safety, and doing a rope pulley. Kids earn a certificate card of completion at the end. Phew, what a day! The line to do the obstacle course was the longest, maybe 40-45min? Fun though.
