However - this does lend to overcrowding, queuing and a shortage of pre-packed nibbles and drinks - not an ideal situation. The coffeehouse is located in a very long building, with the majority of seating towards the rear - great big sofa's and long tables share the room space with standard tables and chairs. The toilets are hidden right behind the back (always a good idea) - but this does mean there not easy to find on the first visit!

So unless for immediate usage I do recommend getting milk (and probably meat) elsewhere.

It's cluttered, but surprisingly easy to find things, and it's a great place for bumping into people you know. Prices are reasonable and it feels great to support a local shop rather than trekking to the electronic, advert-filled world of Oxford supermarkets.

Word to the wise for US visitors…read more... They drive on the left side of the road. But that part is easy. The hard part is avoiding getting slammed in the shopping aisles because yes, they even walk down the aisles on the left side. So unless you want to get bashed around by a very polite group of old ladies, blend in and move to the left. If spending enough at Whole Foods while at home in the US isn't enough, this is where I go to REALLY spend the big bucks. Waitrose is basically a bigger, better, cooler version of Whole Foods but instead of everything being at least $20, everything is 20 pounds. This location is right across the street from my office so when I am looking for some prepackaged bangers and mash with gnarly mushy peas, I bust out my ATM card and let her rip. Centre.

The branch offers many services including: Waitrose Entertaining Quick Check/Pay Cash Point Child/disabled parking services (they have a very large carpark!) And offer a variety of different counters including meat, fish, cheese, olive bar and salad bar. Admittedly Waitrose prices can be pricer than shops such as Sainsburys and Tescos but often the quality is far superior. Personally I shop here very often (I work 5 minutes away) and find the cash point and large car park handy.

I have taken pictures of the sugar selection alone to send to friends back home in the US. Check-out staff are very pleasant. Only downside is that floor staff think nothing of blocking aisles with restocking carts, chatting while they work (slowly), and simply walking in front of you -- especially if you back off slightly to avoid gridlock with other clients. This makes getting through the store difficult -- and getting what you want off the (blocked) shelves harder, contributing greatly to the frustration factor in an already crowded store.

The produce is of consistently good quality and, although not the largest supermarket around, there is sufficient there to do a weekly shop - assuming your pockets are deep enough. Prices have remained consistent following the opening of Sainsbury a few doors up, though the evening opening hours always manage to confound me. All the staff are friendly, helpful and posess congnitive functions. There is a decent sized car-park and you can get your pay-and-display back if you spend over a tenner - not hard to do in Waitrose.
