The butchers are very friendly, know their stuff and seem to like questions and recommendation requests. These chaps do trade/industry customers, but the store front is based on the busy walk up business by regular customers like you and me. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

Had a perfect mocha paired with a jam filled donut baked at the St John Bakery. Everything was absolutely perfect. The raspberry jam paired perfectly with the mocha without being too overly sweet. Overall this shop would be a perfect stop for lighter fare, fresh baked bread, and they also carry a fair diverse selection of wine for a small shop. Certainly worth the stop in the area. It's located right in the center of a well traveled shopping area next to Waterloo. The outdoor seating made for a great place to enjoy it all despite it being just a touch drizzly.

This is quite possibly my favorite find during my stay in London…read more Greensmiths is deceptively small from the outside. My friend wanted to come in because she was starving and wanted to get something from the display windows. We found a cute little bakery area and a butchers area, in which we proceeded to order a couple baked goods to satiate our hunger. There was some ground meat with a crust on the outside that was absolutely fantastic. The mince pies were okay, but I might just not be used to the taste of mince pie (I'm still not sure what it should taste like..). Then we noticed stairs! There was a plethora of other things to see. Fresh produce, coffee shop, extensive wine collection, groceries, and a restaurant! I loved the little restaurant hidden in the store. It was obviously the place to have a quiet lunch with friends. The atmosphere was relaxed. If I didn't live an ocean and some thousands of miles away, I would love to spend my afternoons here sipping on coffee and enjoying a meal with friends. Amongst four of us, we shared a turkey and cranberry sandwich, mushroom risotto, salad, and squash appetizer. The food was light, healthy, and filling. I could tell a great amount of care went into picking fresh ingredients. Greensmiths has a very young and happy vibe to it. I loved coming in here and I loved browsing around. Definitely a place I would frequent if I could!

"Mark, I want a box full of angry crayfish" "Mark, I want something for dinner but I don't know what. Be a good chap and get me something tasty?" "Mark, I want foie gras. Not cheap sh*tty stuff in a jar, I want big hunks of liver." "Mark, I'm redecorating my flat and want some wine boxes because I'm a little bit boho and I can't afford shelves at the moment because I spend all my money on foie gras." He must hate me by now, but he always delivers (quite literally...) Plus the girls in the office all fancy him.

I live pretty near Billingsgate. Have done for about 8 years. I've been once. I went for an article I was writing and had a great time (met a fisherman who hated fish - go figure), but once was enough for me. I do not do well with 6am starts. And the last thing I feel like pre-coffee is buying seafood. But I like cooking. I like making tasty things. I like having fresh food that didn't cost the earth in the supermarket (although my local fishmonger is also awesome). I basically want all the good stuff, delivered to my door. Marky Market does that. Not just to your door, but to your office too. I live so close to Billingsgate that I'd have had a very early wake-up call (Mark starts his day at 2:30 am - I'm not even asleep by then a lot of the time). So Qype laughed at me when I got half a kilo of samphire delivered to their office. I made tasty salads with crayfish for a party, everyone was impressed. Even shared some in the pub with some other Qypers. They were happy too. I'll use Marky Market for any special occasion. If you don't like early starts and you like tasty food, you should too.

Excellent butcher in Bermondsey's Maltby Street Market…read more Great selection of hi and lo cuts, there is a viewing counter in the front part of the store and in the back is where they keep a majority of the meat. Specials hang on the back wall, Jacob's ladders and ox cheek were well priced when I stopped in. I ended up getting 1.5 kilo of Jacobs ladders (aka short ribs) for about 20. The meat is really good quality and well worth the price. Service is to the point, but friendly and very accommodating. The man who was helping me kindly offered to cut my ribs down to size so that they could fit in my pan (don't get me wrong, im an awesome cook but not so great at cuts!) Try and get there earlier in the morning, as some of the more popular cuts will sell before the afternoon rush of the market area (especially on weekends!) I'm really glad I stopped in. My friends who live in the area have been raving about them and now I can definitely see why. Will be back!
