    Mala Japanese Pork Loin.
    Benedict T.

Crispy perfection! I can't believe we've never been here before! Cotolet is a small restaurant tucked in the corner, specializing in katsu. They offer four main proteins (pork loin, fish, chicken, and brick cheese) paired with 9 different sauces. You can definitely find something that fits your palate - savoury, sweet, spicy. Each katsu dish comes with a side of miso soup, rice, and a lightly dressed salad. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the katsu were breaded and fried - just enough breadcrumbs for the katsu to be crispy without being too thick, and fried perfectly to a rich golden brown without being drenched in oil. Some katsu dishes offered by local restaurants tend to over-fry their dishes, but Cotolet does it justice. The menu looks a bit pricey at first but believe me, the portion sizes are MASSIVE. We got the Buldak Cream Sauce Pork Loin and the Mala Japanese Pork Loin. The Buldak actually comes with a spicy Buldak cup noodle, which makes for a great presentation. The cream sauce is slightly heavy, but pairs well against the spicy noodles to calm the tongue. It is quite rich, so don't be surprised if you start to get full midway. The Mala Japanese sauce comes out cold which was interesting, but the taste and fragrance is very reminiscent of Chinese hotpot (Ma for numbing, La for spicy). I think this was probably our favourite flavour. You can also order sauces on the side, so we opted for the Yuzu Miso sauce as an addition to try something new. It was slightly sweet, with a strong yuzu profile throughout. A little bit savoury, a little bit sweet. Definitely come here on an empty stomach - these portion sizes and rich sauces will fill you up! Cotolet truly reminded us of Japanese katsu. We rarely crave fried food, but I suppose katsu can be an exception every once in a while.

Great Katsu and even better chicken Karaage. My only comp is that none of their Katsu comes with authentic Japanese curry sauce.

We haven't been here in a while and it looks like they've updated their menu with some new items such as Mala Japanese Sauce and Deep Basil Sauce. Choice of protein is still pork loin, chicken, fish and brick cheese. They also still carry a small selection of pasta dishes. Miso soup comes with all the entrees. We tried the Deep Basil Sauce with pork loin. It comes with a side salad and the katsu is sprinkled with dorito chips and a selection of nuts (almonds, cashews and pistachios). Quality of the katsu is still very good, light and crispy. The nuts and chips were an interesting addition to the dish but the sauce was very good. Still a great place for katsu.

Chicken Katsu with Brown Demi-Glace Sauce

Tried the Chicken and Pork Loin, both with the Brown Demi-Glace Sauce. The sauce honestly tasted like Japanese curry mixed with fruit juice - maybe peach? It was kind of like you ran out of curry so had to add something else and you decided to do an experiment and added sweet fruit juice. But it actually tasted very weird, at least to me. If you're looking for something with a sweet touch, I'd probably go with the Teriyaki sauce instead. That said, the chicken katsu itself was great - a big, juicy piece, lightly breaded and not greasy at all. the pork one was a bit dry but good too. The space seems like it was converted from a car wash factory, has an industrial vibe. We went during weekend lunch time so it filled up pretty quickly. Service was friendly. The staff lady even gave us a warm goodbye as we left. P.S., They need to double check on the spellings on their menu (i.e., Port Loin, LOL) Food (quality, creativity, consistency) - 3.5/5 Drinks (quality, variety) - NA/5 Ambience (interior design, cleanliness) - 3.5/5 Service (courtesy, knowledge, timeliness) - 4/5 Value (quality vs. price) - 3.5/5 ($$) OVERALL - 3.6

I went here with a friend who was very familiar with the menu and so I asked her to get us anything that she recommended and we ended up with so much food haha. We shared the bulgogi cream pasta and I think it was the red-demi glace sauce katsu. The portions of both were HUGE! The pasta was so creamy and bulgogis was sweet and pasta was al dente. The katsu was equally as good where the sauce was full of flavour and katsu was thick and crunchy. Atmosphere is very nice, well decorated and super clean.

Went back to Cotolet as we were craving some Katsu. The food we ordered was what we always get one spicy Katsu and one cream Katsu the portion of rice seems to be getting smaller and smaller every time. As well as the amount of sauce you get for both the Katsu and the salad. The great thing about this place before was that they had refills on both rice and miso soup, but unfortunately there is no more refills on rice, but they do refill your miso soup. Service was really good usually there's only one person serving so if it's a full house, you do have to try to get their attention. Food came out pretty quick. We did not have to wait really long. The Katsu was very crispy and the sauce is very nice. The restaurant food quality is very consistent, which is nice but the portion size varies. Trying to balance the Katsu and rice. We always run out of rice with half the Katsu remaining and no sauce. Definitely wish it came with more sauce and the refills of rice. The Restaurant Plays music at a low volume, which is nice so you don't have to talk over each other when the other tables are full . We'll definitely visit again, but always hoping to more sauce and larger rice portions

Ordered takeout from this place on a weekday. The resto occupies the spot that Apron Cafe used to sit in. My order was ready in 15-20 min. Walked in and was greeted warmly by the hostess who handed me my food. I ordered a yuzu miso pork loin and an okonomiyaki. The pork was crispy and juicy. The miso sauce was great! I get very similar vibes between this place and Katsuya. The menus also look VERY similar. Okonomiyaki was tasty as well. I liked the fresh salad on top. Overall, food quality was excellent! I do think it was quite pricey though for the quantity of food. Prolly wouldn't be a regular because of the price. Will return to try some of their other katsu flavours!

Pork loin cutlet with creamy seafood sauce

Cotolet is the place to go if you're looking for high quality cutlets! We came by for a weekend dinner and it was crowded. We managed to get a table right away. Ordered the pork loin cutlet with creamy seafood sauce which came with a side salad and miso soup. The cutlet was crispy and flaky on the outside, without drying out the meat. The creamy seafood sauce came with a mussel, crabmeat and squid. I think this sauce was on the heavier side but they provide pickled radish on the side to help cut the heaviness of the dish. The miso soup and side salad were great as well. The portion size was huge! Really great value for the quality and quantity of food.

I ordered the pork cutlet with the brown sauce (on the side so it stays crispy). The pork isn't as greasy compared to other katsu places so it was easier to digest, but the crunch factor was lacking. There was a bit of crunch, but not a satisfying crunch that you normally get from a katsu. The sauce was ok. Definitely tastes better with than without for the katsu. The sauce is on the thinner side (I personally prefer it to be a bit thicker). The bulgogi cream pasta has a bit of spice. Flavour was decent. It's different from your typical pasta sauces which I enjoyed, but it's nothing to write home about. If you're in a rush, keep in mind they'll probably ask you if you're ok waiting 30 mins for your food. Overall, ok. Not dying to go back or wouldn't go out of my way to come.

I got the Poke Katsu with Mushroom Sauce. Crispiness is absolute perfection. Tenderness didn't blow me away. I've tried the mushroom sauce with and without Parmesan sauce. Either way it's quite creamy and rich. A bit much for me personally but I can understand many people, like my friends, will love this. Salad and rice were solid. I would come back again but get whatever sauce on the side so that I can savor every bite of that crispy perfection.

my family and i tried cotolet premium cutlet for the first time on new year's day in the late afternoon, so we were seated at a table immediately. the staff was easygoing and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant was relaxed. every dish that we ordered was saucy, slightly spicy, and super satisfying!!! i felt that the portions were proportional to the price as well. 01. bulgolgi soy beef cream spaghetti 02. mozzarella brick cheese katsu in brown demi-glace sauce (made with various fruits & vegetables) 03. chicken katsu in mushroom cream sauce 04. seafood cream spaghetti

This place is in the corner of the Shoppers Drug Mart Plaza right after the T&T going north. There's quite a bit of parking so super easy. It's actually a small little place with a boutiquey ambiance. The service is prompt and very friendly. We only dropped by to get take out this time. We ordered the spicy tonkatsu set. It came in a compartmentalized box with salad and rice. In two separate boxes were the sauce and miso soup. I asked for the sauce separate but I think they usually keep it like that anyway so your tonkatsu doesn't get soggy. The tonkatsu was beautifully fried - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The spicy sauce was definitely the star. It had a slight kick and was tremendously delicious with the katsu. The rice was a little more cooked than I'd like but that's personal preference. The salad had a nice tangy dressing that went with it. We saw some other customers order pastas as well and they were served beautifully in the restaurant. We are definitely coming back to try dine in!

Service was really good and there is plenty of parking in the area. We got a chicken yuzu miso and a pork loin brown demi glace sauce. Should have gotten sauce on the side. When the katsu came out it was already kinda soggy :( Both the katsus were juicy and not dry. The sauces were decent. Overall if I am in the area and craving katsu I would come back.

The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

That's because every other guest was a well-known "regular" -- a very good sign. We were ushered through the tranquil restaurant and seated at the sushi bar, a zen ambience. We chose the $55 sushi+sashimi omakase lunch course, and it didn't disappoint. The eight pieces of nigiri featured a somewhat typical selection of fish (and hotate/scallop), but slightly edgy and unique in the choice of seasoning and flavours, prepared by Chef Takinami with all the pomp and ceremony and you would expect from fine omakase. The pacing was excellent, we never felt rushed from piece to piece; the wait staff were attentive as would be expected from a high-end Japanese restaurant, on par with omakases that cost three times as much. Overall, incredible value on the meal, for both the food and experience. We couldn't help but look around at what the regulars were enjoying (in addition to their omakase nigiri) -- botan ebi nigiri with deep fried shrimp heads, chawanmushi, cooked dishes featuring monk fish livers, tempura appetizers and more... some great ideas for our next visit!

Ordered tempura vegetables and shrimp with 6 pieces total was only around $9. This tempura tasted truly delicious compared to other pricier restaurants! The whole staff greeted us the moment we came in with smile and felt their kindness/patience while we were looking through the menu. They were very accommodating with changing spicy salmon roll to dynamite roll in the dinner sushi sets for me since I don't eat spicy food. Other restaurants would always charge extra regardless if the price was the same or cheaper. The rice ratio for the rolls was PERFECT! Definitely the best one I've seen by far. I would love to try their signature rolls next time to see if they're the same. I would come here again for lunch and check them out. -1 star because: The sushi to rice ratio is a little too much so I had to take some off unfortunately.
