Sitting next to the river the access in and out of the ground is poor for large crowds, but it is in the town so conveniently located. The pitch is good and the boundary short, so scoring is usually high. Spectator viewing is not great and the facilities are poor by modern standards. A tip for the gents, do not try and use the toilet at the interval at a T20 match. You will be queuing for 10 overs of the 2nd innings and miss most of the action. There is one small toilet for about 3000 spectators. Madness. The atmosphere is usually great though. Which is why it gets 2 stars. The fans are what makes it a good night out. read more

New Writtle Street is home to Essex County Cricket Club and has been it's headquarters ever since I started going in the late 80's. The ground hold around 7000. It's a bit of a hotch potch of vary marquees & stands with the main stands being the Tom Pearce stand & the general public stand at midwicket. The county ground has held world cup cricket games in both 1983 & 1999 Essex CCC recently said on their website the ground is due for a makeover sometime in the next year when most of their home games will move to either Southend or Colchester read more
