Why would I review a church during a vacation? Because this church is so beautiful from the…read moreoutside as it is on the inside....as you walk down Duval St, at night you can see the beautiful exterior all lit up...that bright image will make some curious bodies to check the inside which is also nicely lit at night. The church offers a nice clean place to sit, pray, or rest while shopping, eating or drinking in Key West. A bit of history on this church. The first service for the parish was held on Christmas Day 1832 in the County Courthouse on Jackson Square. That same day the congregation signed an "Act of Association" of the Episcopal Congregation in Key West to be called St. Paul's Church. The original church made of coral rock, was built in 1838-39. On October 11, 1909, disaster struck, and the church was destroyed by a hurricane. The parish hall (completed in 1904) and the Rectory survived the storm and were used for services. Plans for a new church were approved in 1911, which would be constructed of concrete. The church would be located at the corner of Duval and Eaton Streets. This required the moving of the Rectory to its current location in 1914. The first service in the current building was held June 8, 1919. During this time, many of the beautiful stained glass windows were ordered, and installation began in 1920. The organ arrived in 1931 in time for Christmas services. A major restoration of the church began in 1991 to save the building from collapse. Work was complete in 1993 at a cost of nearly one million dollars. Today the church continues to stand as a beacon of light and hope within the diverse cultural community of Key West. The church is open daily for prayer, meditation and visitation. If you do visit, check out the nice stained glass windows that give the church a beautiful look. Between January and May they have frequent concerts, check out their website for more information.

And Saint Mary's has the usual Mother shrine but goes one better with an outdoor Grotto named Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. It is magnificent AND powerfully protective. The Grotto includes the statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and Bernadette which was dedicated on May 25, 1922, the Feast of the Ascension. Sister Gabriel of the Sisters of the Holy Name designed the structure using natural rock gathered from these Church grounds and throughout the island. Sister Gabriel had survived three major hurricanes since her arrival in Key West on August 25, 1897 and was saddened by the suffering, devastation and heartache she had witnessed as a result of these terrible storms. It was her spiritual desire to keep Key West and its residents safe from future storms. This, in turn, inspired the devout nun to build the Grotto to seek heavenly blessings from Our Blessed Mother Mary, who is traditionally thought of as the gracious protector of seafarers. City lore notes that Sister Gabriel is said to have remarked on that dedication day that as long as the Grotto stood, "Key West would never experience the full brunt of a hurricane." And as all residents can attest, there has not been a severe storm on the island since the erection of the Grotto in 1922. This Grotto is featured in guided tours of Key West and television news crews broadcast live from in front of the Grotto when a hurricane threatens," said Wikipedia. The Grotto now hosts prayers in advance of hurricanes and tropical storms. Terrible 2017 Hurricane Irma glanced Key West and struck the Keys far from this area and many are the thanks given to Mary for this. Many Catholics come throughout the year to honor this Great Woman of God. In front of the Grotto, inlaid stones indicate a rosary. It is an honor to say the rosary and Hail Mary prayer in this beautiful shrine and grotto dedicated to Our Mother Mary.
