It's the timeless setting that makes Royal Dornoch such a pleasing place to play golf. It's wild, isolated and, at the same time, absolutely beautiful; there's the blaze of colour in early summer when the gorse is in flower. The pure white sandy beach divides the links from the Dornoch Firth and it all feels very humbling. Formed in 1877, Royal Dornoch means exceptional standards and we always aim to exceed the expectations of our frequent visitors and loyal members. However, we aim to do this in a relaxed, informal environment, with an emphasis on traditional highland hospitality. The old course is a classic links designed by Old Tom Morris with deep revetted bunkers, undulating gorse lined fairways and smooth fast greens. It is a superb test of golf with seven par fours over 400 yards.... The seaside setting is beautiful, apart from the Royal Air Base that provides more than enough noise to an otherwise peaceful setting. This is really a fun course that provide some treasured golf memories. Also a good value. Hope to return!

The New is testing enough, and has…read moresome memorable holes - but the Old is a genuinely underrated gem, seemingly just below the radar of many who play Nairn and Castle Stuart in the area. The front 9 is quite varied, moving gradually inland after a gentle opening hole, with stern tests at the 3rd (elevated green), 4th (long par 3 with a road behind a very narrow green), 5th (well-bunkered drive, on a par 4 which is a beast into the wind), and 8th (another well-guarded hole featuring fairway bunkers and plenty of heather). The 9th and 10th offer some respite, birdie chance short 4s over nice undulating links terrain, before another few challenging 4s, culminating in the rugged 14th, where the RAF landing light in the fairway is your line, and the green butts up against the beach. Then, the last four holes go straight for home, and the 18th is probably the finest closing hole in Scotland, OB all the way up the right with the town and the clubhouse overlooking your efforts. Avoid Hell Bunker on the left of the raised green. This is the kind of course when, played once, you will be desperate to come back again and again.

A challenging but fair course (spend the £5 for the yardage book which is also a nice souvenir, and don't be afraid to leave your driver in the bag when looking at a blind shot into a narrow strip of fairway). With sheep and cattle grazing here and there as traditional grazing rights are still held over the land by local farmers, come here to experience three things in one: a sense of the authentic roots of the game in its native land, a fantastic golf course by modern standards, and a breathtakingly beautiful seaside links setting. On top of that, the members and staff were as friendly and hospitable as you will find anywhere in Scotland, which is saying something. And the restaurant is quite tasty with welcoming members and a beautiful elevated view of the tribulations of the 18th hole and the sea. In mid September on an excellent weather day, I had no one in front of me and the closest group two holes behind, which added to the peaceful and unique atmosphere. If visiting from the U.S. as I was, do yourself a favor and scratch a "name droppable" course off your itinerary in favor of this gem that is overflowing with character. Particularly if any of the courses on your list contain the name "Trump". And don't rent a cart unless you really need it -- you'll walk this course in 3.5 hours with a much better feel for the amazing spirit of the place than if you ride.

This is not like a normal golf club. The atmosphere is very relaxed and they even accept jeans in the club house. The staff all give a genuine Scottish down to earth welcome. The food is great and the service is exceptional. I would thoroughly recommend visiting this golf club.

Great golf with great service…read more As you drive through the fields across from Inverness you can't quite tell you're about to play a world class golf course. Rye grass and bluffs shield the clubhouse until you turn the last corner. Staff is incredibly personable and knowledgable. The pro shop is well equipped with the best merchandise I saw in Scotland (including St. Andrews) Many brands like KJUS that you can't get in the US. We enjoyed lunch in the clubhouse overlooking the course and the Moray Firth. Leather chairs and dark wood appointments accentuate the many windows of the clubhouse. Our server Charlotte was kind and attentive. The course itself is in immaculate shape. What we couldn't control was the wind and our general mediocre play. Most holes are along the water so you always have a great view. We did encounter 40 MPH winds toward the end of round with made the long par 5 18 incredibly difficult. Do yourself a favor and visit Castle Stuart during your next trip to Scotland.

Macloud has made improvements on 3 holes (I believe) making Tain gettable yet challenging. Sheep are visible (and audible!) on nearly every hole. The wind will test you on holes 16-18 but will also provide you with eagle opportunities on several holes. Tain is about an hour north of Inverness. Put it on your list!

It's an easy, pretty straight forward 17min walk or so from the port. Course was in pretty good condition. There was a little bit of rain the day or 2 before, but fairways and greens were firm and solid. It does get pretty windy being by the water and all. But that also allows for some great pics on some of the holes. I will say that only thing confusing if you're not a regular is where to go for the next hole. You really gotta pay attention for the arrows and look at the signs. Other than that, awesome course!
