We had a great first experience at Cowbells. We have frequented other breakfast establishments in town but wanted to change it up. The food was great. We got there before the Saturday morning rush but by 915am people were waiting for tables. The prices are fair and the portions are perfect. My omelet was great. Checked out Cowbells with my two kids recently and it's nothing to brag about. I found a hair in my sons eggs. The waitress was great and very friendly, the food my daughter and I had was standard. Welcome addition to Whitman. I have been there twice for lunch. Each time it has been packed. I have tried their Reuben and their Rachael Sandwich specials. The sandwiches were very good as were the fries and pickles they came with. I also have tried their New England Clam Chowder. At $4 a cup, while it was loaded with potatoes and diced clams, it was watery and lacked any kind of flavor. I will definitely return to Cowbells, but I will steer clear of the chowder. read more

Just came from Cowbells after having breakfast. Kim, our server, who also made our food, was excruciatingly rude and our meals were the pure toxin of the earth! It was all we could do to choke it down and put up with such terrible and torturous service (KIDDING!!). Actually, Kim was very welcoming and extremely funny and engaging. Our food, which she did make, was very good. My husband and I had been there before, but apparently had never been there while Kim was on shift. I went back for breakfast recently. The breakfast was also good. I had the hash and eggs (poached) with rye. Perfectly poached and the hash is homemade. Hash has a little bit too much bell pepper taste for my liking, but was still good. Their home fries are more like a potato pancake, but good as well. Cowbells Cafe is a comfy, warm little stop with friendly staff and a decent menu for a quick spot of breakfast or lunch. The Look: Hikaru Utada says it best: Simple and Clean. This is a small spot that makes good use of its limited space with a warm and inviting little cafe atmosphere that manages to fill itself with tables without seeming crowded. There's nothing in there that grabs your attention--but when you're just a local stopping in for a small town breakfast or a spot of lunch, all you need is a cozy little slice of hometown, and Cowbells does that well. Along with its good organization and nice decor, it's well cared for. The tables are kept clean and ready, and everything looks to be in good repair and clean. The Attitude: The staff are friendly, patient, and both willing to engage in conversation and (more importantly for me, antisocial lout that I am) to keep things to the point. They also care enough about their customers to know them and remember them on multiple trips, even repeat take-out bums like myself. The Actually Important Thing: My suggestion is, if you're getting a proper meal, stick to the breakfast menu. The hash browns are high quality, and the biscuits and gravy are decent, if not memorable, but the real star is the corned beef hash. This isn't your average half-assed canned mush that most cafes, even supposedly respectable breakfast spots, will serve. This is the real deal. They make it themselves, and it is GOOD. The thing on the breakfast menu I'd stay away from is the breakfast sandwich, especially for takeout. It's fine in most regards, but they use an english muffin for it, which is a rookie mistake. Dining in, an english muffin will do the trick alright, but it adds nothing to the sandwich, dead weight instead of the binding to a good sandwich. And for takeout, an english muffin is a death sentence for a breakfast sandwich. I live less than 5 minutes away, but even in that short a time, an english muffin becomes as soggy and unappetizing as an overused, deteriorating dish sponge. A bagel, with its more resilient structural integrity, would be so much better. Every lunch option I've sampled so far has been middle of the road, no better. The turkey club is so basic that I could have done it on my own just as well, and there's nothing to set the pastrami apart from any other eating establishment's. Overall, lunch options are a mild disappointment here; I know that they could do so much better. And how do I know this? Because of the true, wonderful gem of Cowbells Cafe's menu: Onion Rings. Whether you stop in for breakfast or lunch, something quick or something substantial, you owe it to yourself to get a side or full order of onion rings. These are hands down the best onion rings I've ever experienced. They're flaky and crunchy, but not so much that they lessen the onion's part. They're soft, but not soggy. They have just the right amount of batter. They're sweet, salty, and buttery in the perfect combination, with a subtle excellence that sneaks up on you as you eat. These are the onion rings of the gods, and what has kept me coming back regularly. Overall, Cowbells Cafe is a solid local spot. It looks the way it should, it feels the way it should, and as long as you're ordering the right menu items, it's delicious. That said, this business SHOULD be earning a rating of 5 stars from me. The chef's got the skill, you can see it in the corned beef hash and those divine onion rings, but so many items are inexplicably average that they pull the score down from what it could be.
