Set up on Greengate Square, Cowherds can be found next to the Grindsmith pod. It's a shame that the Manchester weather still isn't playing in June, but I felt like I needed a longer walk than usual over my lunch, so took the time to visit them!
Their menu changes throughout the week, but everything is guaranteed vegetarian - a rarity in this age of burgers, hot dogs and fried chicken (don't get me wrong, these are some of my favourite items, but it's good to have a break!) They have juices, raw pad thai, vegan sushi, and a hot 'buddha bowl' option.
On my visit, the hot option - perfect for the cold wet weather - was a mushroom strogonoff, served with wholegrain rice and steamed kale. I'm not usually a mushroom fan but felt like hey, sometimes you have to take a chance. At £5.50, it was a healthy lunch portion and kept me going through the afternoon. It was packed with mushrooms and plenty of sauce to soak into the rice, and you can also add some seeds if you'd like.
I'll be back over the summer I'm sure. Service was really friendly and swift, and I can imagine that, once the sun finally does stick around for a while, the square will become a great place to spend some time. read more
