He signed the wrong date on my smog check 5 months prior to date we did the smog on The first 2 times I asked him nicely to correct paperwork because 2 potential buyers noticed the date. This is a very simple fix that a normal person would just do and apologize. Not this ignorant racist. He told me he would not fix. He started calling me names and said I was stupid because I don't understand the rules. So I paid $57.00 for his screw up and I can't even show paperwork to potential buyers because it is incorrect. Updating my review to address Lucinda's negative "compliment" on my original review for some transparency: Cox Auto Service never bribed me with anything and as someone proud to be part of the Yelp Elite Squad, I am very disheartened at the implication that I would take a bribe in order to write a review for a company. I went to this auto shop after having horrible service at another location(of course that location received a less than stellar review from me on Yelp). Everything about my original review was based off my own personal experience- of course your experience may vary. And I explicitly called out their blunt behavior - which I adore- because I am aware that others may not have the same views as me. I came in the get the fuel injectors serviced and the owner begins to argue with me about my car first telling me I don't have a turbo. I lifted the hood and show him the turbo and a plate saying TURBO. Next this guy tells me it's a hybrid?!? I said no it's a 2.0 liter turbo, no batteries in this car other than that one you see. Ive had enough at this point snd thank him for walking over, I extend my hand and say thank you and this clown walks away. What shitty customer service. Honda had it up and running for 1/2 what this clown quoted. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere that actually knows cars. read more

DO NOT TRUST THESE GUYS!!!!!! I went for a simple engine spark plug change and i knew the issue and even brought an entire evaluation i got from autozone who has the readers in terms of reading the cpu. They later told me my reading is bad and tried to charge me $60 for something that's free. Then later tried to charge over $900 in issues when sparkplugs are only about a $100. And to top if all off, two weeks later i had the exact same engine problem. I honestly believe these guys needs to be shut down especially when the owner of the shop talked about his kids and tried to make me sympathize when i tried to negotiate for a cheaper price. I'm a college student and don't make a lot of money so knowing there are still people who basically enjoy taking candy from a kid really sucks, especially when i went to investigate the issues to realize they've only done half of what was originally promised to be fixed. AVOID THESE GUYS AT ALL COST AND SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! THEY WILL CHARGE YOU AN INSANE AMOUNT THAN WHAT IS ACTUALLY WORTH THE COST TO REPAIR!!!!!! I showed up to have them check on wife's car AC and brake lights. Staff was friendly. Roughly 20-30 minutes of diagnostics/troubleshooting pass. Results -AC: Compressor died. -Brake lights: Some electrical problem -Oil change: Black sludge oil! Apparently really need an oil change badly (later found out only had been 2500 miles since last oil change). They said the quote for compressor would be $900 and labor is $360. For the brakes they said they couldn't figure it out and would need to do a complete check of the entire electrical system and they could do it while changing to compressor. (Unknown cost for the brake problem) I purchased a OEM genuine compressor online for 72% cheaper than their quote price and paid a private mechanic $200 for the labor. Which was about 20-25 minutes because the compressor is completely accessible from under the car without taking any parts off besides shielding. The mechanic also checked on the brakes and it took him 2 minutes to figure out that brake lights were just burned out. Replaced brake lights for $12. Either they just didn't check the brake lights at all or were using that as a way to get me back to do the compressor. Also, what amounts to about $700 per hour for labor? read more

Car service wasn't too bad, although it costed almost 1k to replace brakes on a 2003 Toyota Minivan which I'm still in shock about, just doesn't sound right. Alex helped with getting my car smogged which was awesome, however there was a huge lack of professionalism. He's a family friend & maybe that's why he thought it was okay to make flirty advances, like taking me home, and questioning my relationship, and inviting me out to party. COX AUTO REPAIR in Vista, Ca. is a scam, They are crooks... every time I spoke to Alex the price went up without any real explanation, even when I went there to pick up the car after being quoted another higher price, the price was another over $100... And my car was block by other cars when I got there, I asked why, Alex said he was afraid of it getting stolen, (the car is 20 years old) I believe it was blocked in the garage, because Alex thought I would not pay the doubled charged price at this point. I had planned to scrutinize the bill due, but I knew it was futile and I just want to get the heck out of there. Alex replaced the front brakes and rotors on my Chevrolet Tahoe the very same day I called in about 3-4hrs. Not only did Cox Auto Service get the job done quickly, professionally and affordably, Alex even offered to drive me home (with my 2 big dogs in tow) so I didn't have to wait at the shop. Do yourself a favor and skip the dealership service center. These guys are a NAPA shop and have the parts you need same day without having to wait 4-6 weeks like you would if you took it to Chevy. Terrible customer service. I was working with the guy that runs the front desk and he was ok. And I mean not great not super friendly and really kind of put out by my questions. I was trying to get an older vehicle smoged and they were not willing to work with me. I had information from the CA state referee service and was trying to explain what needed to be done..... Then the owner jumped in. Talk about rude and condescending. He refused to run the Smog a 2nd time to failure he aborted the first test. (probably do not want a failure on their record) If it doesn't fail I don't know what to fix. He immediately said $300 for a diagnostic..... Well again he has no record of a failure so where does he start. There was another customer in the office and he actually walked out I think he was uncomfortable. The guy at the front desk was uncomfortable and I do not think he agreed with the owner. Long story short.... DO NOT use this place they are rude and seem to not not care what the customer has to say. I spent many hours researching and working with the state referee service so I know what I was talking about. OH AND BY the way, I called another place explained the situation and what I was told by the referee and he said no problem bring it in. I did he did what I was instructed to do by the referee and my vehicle PASSED. My choices out there for SMOG testing skip this one. read more

I came in asking for a look over an 86 f250 I had recently bought, I called about 5 other auto shops that said they could take a look in about 1-2 weeks. When I called Cox they said "just bring it on down we'll take a look." The wait wasn't too long as I grabbed a drink across the street and got a call about 45 mins to an hour later saying what all needs to be done. They installed all the parts I requested in a timely manner. I also had a new clutch sitting in the bed and they said they could install that too. They actually sent my flywheel to the machine shop because it was in need of some tlc. Cox also filled all of my fluids and gave a military discount. I would highly recommend this shop for auto needs. read more

I had service at Cox Auto repair, and 1 day after service, my car failed. When I called to complain, the worker hung up on me. They refused to take responsibility for the fault, and told me they would see what was wrong with my Truck, and charge me for their time, even though they caused the problem. Amazing service, quick turn around and fair prices. Went in for my check engine light. They were able to get me in the same day and identify the issue which originated from an accident 2 years ago that wasn't fixed. They showed me the damage and advised me, in detail, on how to go about getting reimbursed by my insurance company. They even offered to drive me home and pick me up while they were fixing my vehicle. My vehicle was fixed and my insurance company is in the process of refunding the cost of my repairs. I definitely feel they stayed true to their code of ethics and plan on doing all my future business with them. 5 stars! read more

They tested out everything it could be, found the issues, and went above-and-beyond what I expected. Alex also brought me back to take a look at my car to make sure I understood what was going on. I asked another car repair shop, and they were so busy I wouldn't have been able to get in until next week, and they quoted about $150 more than I paid at Cox Auto Service. I came into Cox Auto Service in San Marcos, CA fresh out of Miami, FL as the final leg on my cross-country trip. At this point, my 2015 Lexus ES 300h was having major transmission problems. I looked around the entire San Diego region for a place that I could fix my transmission at a reasonable price, and I could not find any such place. Finally, I came across Cox Auto Service, and they fixed the transmission in my Lexus for a very reasonable price. Unlike every other mechanic shop in San Diego, Cox Auto was honest with me, and they did not try to squeeze every possible dollar out of me. Excellent and professional service. For ten years, we've wanted to write this review and finally getting around to it today! Alex and his team are honest and always have provided excellent service! Taking care of my girls' cars and in emergency situations, he NEVER over quotes or pushes to service something that doesn't need service. We've had tires put on by a local tire chain and they always call to upsell us with costly services. When we take the vehicles back to Alex, they never need what the tire chain says we need! Great service, no BS. I recently had my oil changed by Jiffy Lube and after enduring Jiffy Lube's torrent of upsets and up charges left with my oil changed. (see my Jiffy Lube review for details of the nightmare) The folks at Cox figured out that my drain plug washer had been torn by improper installation (Jiffy Lube) and oil was leaking through the drain plug. Cox handled the problem quickly and gave me a break on the cost. They also took the time to answer a number of questions on maintenance due on my car as I'm now near 60,000. I know enough about cars to do most of the work myself but don't have the time or place. In a way the Jiffy Lube fiasco was a blessing because I now have a solid garage to go to locally. read more

Terrible service. Took my car in to have an issue looked at and they ended up breaking 2 other items. When we brought it up, they proceeded to tell us we brought it in this way. When we proved we didn't, they started talking to us like we were stupid just because we are women. They even insinuated to my husband I was stupid. I Didn't appreciate being treated like less because of my gender. I will never go back. It is every woman's nightmare when going to a mechanic. It didn't help that they made my car worse. I have just moved into the Vista area and I came across this Cox Auto Service they have a great price for oil change and not only that when I had to have additional repairs done on my car. They took the time to explain what needed to be done and why. For example: I thought I should have my transmission fluid checked. They took the time to first check it and then show me that the fluid really did need to be changed. I was also impressed by the care and time they take to assist elderly in car maintenance and not take advantage of their time or money. Rather they give their honest professional opinion. My car was towed to Cox Auto Service Repair Shop on service rd. In Vista, Ca.. I was told over the phone 3 quotes to repair my timing belt, I had talked to the owner Alex who told me he would repair my car for less than the other quotes I had gotten. Alex quoted me $580.00 that included the labor too. Then he called me the next to tell me its $1352.00! He wanted me to agree to that quote over the phone and I refused noway how did we get from $580.00 to $1352.00. I told him no I do not and will not agree to that quote. I was referred to him by another auto repair shop who was very fair with me Master Care. I explained to the owner Alex that Mastercsre had gave me a great price on the parts they had worked it out with me by letting me pay for my parts at wholesale price not retail price which is always higher. So telling this to the owner Alex he said he would work out the price with me over the phone. I trusted this man to be a man of his word only to find out at his shop he was NOT! I had not met or seen this owner prior to meeting him for the first time at the shop. As soon as my friend and I another lady arrived at the shop the first thing he said was, Wow, 2 beautiful women at my shop! Which was inappropriate. Then he went through this long explanation why my bill was so high. I had told him I dont have this kind of money which I told him over the phone the day before and said again that I do not agree to that bill when his quote to me was $580.00. Then my boyfriend had told me do not let them do the job for more than $700.00. When I had told Alex this he was very disrespectful and rude. My boyfriend had also found coupons online where they were advertising my Timing belt for a 4 cylinder at $199.99, then he also found another coupon $250.00 off your bill which when I went back to thier shop after he charged me $1352.00 to try to talk to them 4 times about the coupons and the discounts. The first time I had gone back to the shop regarding the coupons I had my boyfriend on speakerphone and he was listening to me talking to the owner Alex and my boyfriend was defending me when the owner Alex kept touching my phone and hung up on my boyfriend in the middle of the conversation 2 times. My boyfriend and I was just talked down to and completely disrespected. Never did I get treated properly. Then Alex when he found out I worked in a doctors office he kept talking like I was making big money and can afford to pay the big bill. He had a plan he took advantage of me financially and I plan on taking him to small claims court and have allready filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. After the multiple times going back to the Cox Auto Repair shop trying to work things out, I had the conversation video taped so I can prove his behavior. Alex is the best! Took my car in last minute, an hour before closing, because it starting falling apart. Fixed what he could and went out of his way to call both my insurance company AND warranty company MULTIPLE times until he got answers. Called the dealership and set up an appointment for me to take my car in and get a loaner. Who does that?! I've been turned away from the same dealership before when they said I didn't have a warranty and Alex would not take that as an answer because he knew I did. Alex is so kind and accommodating and really takes care of his customers. I HIGHLY recommend Cox Auto Service to anyone and everyone, but especially those with german cars whose dealerships like to take advantage and/or charge crazy high prices. Terrible service, we brought the car in because my wife had added too much oil. This turned into a 5 week back and forth of all the items we needed. We picked the car up and within 10 miles a cooling hose burst. We brought it back and needed a bunch more work! They rebuilt the transmission valve body. They had terrible communication with us until we had to demand they finish because we needed the car back. Alex was sexist and inappropriate to my wife. When she complained that we had to keep coming back, Alex said it was just because she wanted to keep coming back to see him. When she mentioned she had a husband he became hostile. We picked up the car and within 100 miles all the check engine lights came on. We brought the car back and they said it was nothing and reset the codes. It happened again within a week. We brought it back and they again had the car for almost a week, they could not figure out what was triggering all the check engine lights. I didn't want to write this review or confront Alex, in case the vehicle needed to be brought back. Well sure enough 6 months later the transmission is out. I went in this time, and Alex was immediately hostile. "Who are you? It's not your car, I'll deal with your wife." I still tried to play it cool and said my wife was busy, or couldn't deal with it. Alex kept saying they didn't do anything to the transmission and was skating trying to not take any responsibility. Alex kept asking for my wife saying he would deal with her. Once I snapped and told him, she doesn't want to deal with you, doesn't like the way she was treated, etc. he got extremely hostile, hung up on me multiple times, and wouldn't face either of us when we went to pick up the car.
