I don't know what to say.... We signed in ahead of time on line, checked in when we got there and still waited 2 hours, and still NEVER GOT ANY FOOD. We checked in several times, people came after us and get sat and served food while we watched. We asked and waited politely, even after we finally got a table. I am diabetic and my blood sugar was very low. We waited at our table and watched other families being sat and served while we only got drinks. I think our food order was in for over 39 minutes before we finally had to get up and leave. We just went to a fast food place nearby bc my blood sugar was so low. Consuela that served us sounded sick as a dog and seemed inattentive, had to ask another server to bring us biscuits. Steak was pretty mid and chicken strips left some to be desired. Our miserable experience started in the lobby where we were told we would have a 10 minute wait. After 10 minutes they began calling our name every 2 minutes to let us know "our table was almost available " this lasted about another 15 minutes. We got a table at 9:45. Our coffee arrived 20 minutes later and at 10:30 we were REALLY wondering where breakfast was. We watched two tables get sat after and fed before us. One of the tables recycled 2 x while we were there. We finally ASKED for our meals .The table behind me left w/o eating......... needless to say, we were pretty upset and left angry. On our recent trip to Abilene we came to be Cracker Barrel! A restaurant and store into one. I loves that concept because while we were waiting to be seated which didn't take long on a Tuesday evening we were able to browse around the store they have. They actually have many different trinkets and small gifts. We bought a Mustang encyclopedia on sale. Upon seating right away I noticed the country style decor not only to the outside of the restaurant but also indoors. The menu has various country items and of course delicious biscuits and corn bread. The cool thing is that they have breakfast all day! I really enjoyed my chicken and biscuits meal served with a side of fried apples. I will definitely try other items on their menu although I do not know if we have Cracker Barrel in California. read more

I've eaten at this Cracker Barrel probably 20 times. Once was for dinner, not the best meal, not the worst. The other 19 times were for breakfast and only once did the waitress forget to put our order in, so it took a long time (40 minutes from order to arrival of food at the table). The other 18+ times I visited was for breakfast and it has always been consistently good. I get the same thing nearly every time and it's delicious. Uncle Herschel's breakfast with fried catfish, hashbrown casserole, eggs over medium, grits and coffee. It's the reason I come back again and again. Yelp reviews should be rated according to the statistical average of your combined experiences. I read so many reviews that are written "it's normally great, but this one time I had to wait.....so I'm rating the whole of my experience at 1 star". That's just not accurate. Too many Yelp reviewers use Yelp as a forum to rant on their ONE bad experience, which skews the overall rating of a restaurant to be seen as a primarily negative experience. My son goes to Texas Tech so I've made the drive through Abilene quite a few times. Twice the hunger pangs hit driving though Abilene and it's one of the bigger cities on my path to Lubbock, so there's options here. Cracker Barrel is one of my favorite road trip stops. It's just nostalgic to me and the food is usually tasty. Gotta love the gift shop while you wait for a table as well. This particular location left a lot to be desired. The staff was friendly but service was extremely slow. The food was lukewarm and wasn't up to par with the other locations I have been to. They didn't offer the rolls or cornbread like usual either. So the two times I've stopped in Abilene to eat, both times have been meh! I'm packing a lunch next time! read more

Traditional breakfast Diners in Abilene are scarce. One I wanted to try was cash only and that doesn't work for my expense report so I decided to revisit CB&CS. Someone with a distinct lack of focus and a Hemingway complex wrote this ridiculous menu. I have always HATED having to read paragraphs for every meal and trying to find what subtle differences between options. I am an intelligent, well educated and a voracious reader and it annoys. I ordered a la cart to get what I wanted. 4 eggs, over medium, grits, turkey sausage and coffee with cream is what I wanted and it was all prepared correctly. The coffee was decent and my server, Jami was attentive and got everything right. She was great and made everything good. It was served fast and hot and my experience was really good. She even offered and got me coffee to go. Everyone remember that servers are the unsung heroes of the DemPanic. While hundreds of thousands of people sit on their couch and collect enhanced benefits with money taken from the taxpayers, these folks work hard for tips. Their hourly pay rate is a crime. They are often working more tables because people don't want to work. Tip generously. I tip 20% (max allowed by travel policy) and add cash as well. Be patient, kind and generous. Ordered the roast beef, which has been my favorite for years. Received two small slices that were so tough that I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it. It had no flavor and was not edible. They covered my fried okra with gravy, which should have been served in a separate bowl to prevent soggy wet okra. No refills on the tea. When I told the waitress, she was not concerned in the least. Ate here while I'm out of town for a few days. This is always a cute place to go to. We had a party of 21 and they were really attentive. Each section had different waitresses and they were all really nice. One thing I didn't really get though was that when my waitress came by to fill up my coffee she said "I'm going to fill you up one more time because once we get busy I won't be over here that much." If I could give this restaurant zero stars I would. First off, we sat waiting for a waitress to just take our drink order for 20 minutes. A manager saw us and asked if we'd been helped, we said no. A few minutes later a harried waitress came to get our drink order. I told her that we would go ahead and order our food too because it took so long for her to get our drink order. We waited and waited, no food and didn't see our server anywhere. We finally asked another waitress to check on our food, she came out and said we'd only been waiting for 18 minutes, which was a lie. We'd been waiting on our food for at least 30 minutes at that point. She told us that our order would be out next. We waited some more, meanwhile two tables got their food and they came in after us. I asked for the manager. That took forever, he got there just before our food got to the table. I started to tell him what happened and when he saw our food, he said, "Oh, there it is." Then he just walked off, ignoring the fact that I was still talking! I was fuming, and guess what? We only got half of our food, and it was cold! I asked for the manager again, I wasn't done with him. When he came back, he still didn't care, nor did he offer to make it right. Oh he did offer to bring more food, but we didn't want to wait another 45 minutes. Finally another manager came out, but he started out giving excuses. My finance, who is the sweetest man I've ever known, and never gets mad, blew a gasket when after we told him that our food was cold, he said, "I don't cook with ice on my hands." Having eaten at Cracker Barrels all over the country, this is the worst. Had to ask for set ups AFTER they delivered the food....waitress was surprised we had our food and after starting to eat, I understood...the food had been previously prepared, except, perhaps for my two fried eggs. My wife's scrambled eggs were cold and obviously precooked. Seriously? I was a fry cook when I was a teen and we NEVER precooked anything. The biscuits were cold and hard, the bacon was 'almost' cooked, the Hashbrown Casserole tasted different than we remember....did you foolishly change the recipe? My love for Cracker Barrel started back in my college days, when my friends and I would road trip to Dallas to watch the Red River Shootout (Hook 'Em!) and feel ourselves extremely famished after driving from Austin to Dallas and just craved comfort food. So sure enough, right as we pulled in Dallas, we would head straight to Cracker Barrel. Now, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the food at Cracker Barrel but what really draws me in is the ambiance. Something about the comforting down-south décor, their coveted rocking chairs that you can actually purchase, and the large checkerboard and checker pieces just gets me. The food at Cracker Barrel is a few steps above your normal Denny's or IHOP. The chicken and dumplings are delicious and make you feel warm and fuzzy. The pancakes are fluffy and buttery (if you get a fruit pancake, ask for the whipped cream on the side or else they lather your pancakes up real good). The country fried steak isn't overly greasy and comes with two generous sides. The biscuits are generally superb but the cornbread is a bit dry. I always feel like visits at Cracker Barrels are hits or misses. Some days, the food is mediocre. Other days, the food is pretty darn good. But the real consistency lies in the staff - they make you laugh, they make great small talk, and most importantly, they make you feel like you're at grandma's house. read more

Service stayed out slow. Ida was our server. She forget several things, but they were doing all their side work. So some of the other servers made sure our need were taken care of. However, we didn't get a single drink refill the whole time we were there. Overall, the food was good, but it would've been nice to have something to wash it down. Our server seemed a little distracted or irritated, but everyone else working was super pleasant, warming & inviting. Will definitely return. This is your classic Cracker Barrel experience and while the food was fine and grilled chicken salad was pretty tasty I was more impressed with the staff. Everyone was masked from the shop to the restaurant and they were constantly going around cleaning and wiping down or sweeping etc. I know that might not be too out of the norm for them but in these times it is appreciated even more. Our server was great and we received just the right amount of service. We were seated at a table for 6 even though it was only 2 of us but - distancing. The wait wasn't terrible on a Saturday and there weren't that many people in the shop so we were able to look around before we were called up. I've been to many Cracker Barrel's across this great land of ours. The people out there who know me know I spent / wasted most of my youth traveling the Untied States and several other countries, by motorcycle and or aircraft. I'm not sure what the attraction this chain of this restaurant chain has. My guess is its just fun to see something different. Atmosphere: Its like stepping back in time. Old time rocking chairs set outside, inside everything from scented candles, candy, and toys. Basically Little House on the Prairie feel to it. (that the intent so the achieved it). Food: Had breakfast there several times mostly the biscuit and gravy, cant go wrong there. This time I went safe chicken fried stake, mash potatoes, corn and fried apples, and a sweet tea chaser. Nothing AMAIZING about the food . They have a good menu with wide chose of traditional American foods most around the $12-19 range.. Service: Seated after a greeted from the hostess, waitress there within minutes, I had just started fumbling around with my cell phone. Placed the order and maybe only a ten minute wait till the food arrived. Overall: (B) I definitely recommend Cracker Barrel.
