1. Prologue: Before this review, the only thing I knew about Cracker Barrel is they start sprouting like mushroom clusters after a storm when driving to Dallas or San Antonio. 2. Today we went to the family Cracker Barrel in San Marcos and had an amazing experience mostly because of our server Bryan. Yes our food was good but Cracker Barrel always seems to have good food. Bryan is what made this location stand out. Apart from his amazing smile he was on top of everything. When our drinks were running low he was on it. When we needed napkins he was on it. What an interesting breakfast this morning! I decided to lay around in bed until 10am. Then, not knowing how anything was in San Marcos, I suggested Cracker Barrel. Chain restaurants can't be too bad. So off to fight the Saturday morning breakfast crowd we went. Being a Christmas Grinch walking into a overstuffed room that looks like Santa threw up in was a bit overwhelming. But after making my way through the maze was able to get on the list to be seated. The hostess said ten minutes. Exactly at the time she said that, someone walked up and it was like a scene from Seinfeld. The girl said to the hungry man, oh only 5, 10 minutes. He said it had been 30 and he thought his group would go ahead and find somewhere else. I got nervous, but decided that browsing upon the 95,032 items in the store would keep me distracted. Much to my surprise, exactly 10 minutes later, my name was called! YaY!! After being seated we noticed there were a lot of tables around us with no food on them and a lot of hungry looking people. Getting a little anxious again that something was awry, we searched our menus for what would satisfy a late morning hunger. If you've ever read the first 4 breakfast plates on the menu here, please tell me what the difference is in them. It was like looking 4 of the same options, just worded in a different order. My friend says, "I'll just point to one and hopefully after I get some food in me I can think enough to order what I really wanted. Jeez I hope there's not a test." About that time our lovely waitress came to bring our drinks and inform us that just in case no one had told us, half of the grill was broken so the food was taking a REALLY LONG TIME. Nice to know after we had ordered. I do have to mention, the super sweet waitress brought us a plate with 2 biscuits and jelly as a little something to hold us over. Unnecessary, but she knew how to earn those tips! Just to our surprise, when we were contemplating heading off somewhere else there came our food after only about 15 minutes. Lucky 2 times in one place. The food was good, our service was great and the price wasn't too bad either! This trip could have turned out really bad. This place used to be decent. Ever since covid it is just not worth it. First off, DO NOT USE THE WAITLIST IN THEIR APP!!! No matter what. You will wait longer than people at the restaurant. They are extremely unorganized. 1-1/2 hour wait to eat breakfast is ridiculous. The service and food have suffered. It is just not worth going out to eat anymore. After a long day of window shopping at the outlets in San Marcos, I'm always in the mood for lunch or dinner at Cracker Barrel. While I'm a self-labeled health freak, the fare served here is simple home-style cooking that I crave every once in awhile. I suggest going for an early dinner or late lunch when it's calm and quiet. Comfort food isn't so comforting when the dining room is crowded and noisy. There's often a long wait at rush times too, but the waiting isn't half that bad considering there's a country store full of knick knacks to oogle. The food at CB is satisfying for a chain restaurant, although I've had a few misses, especially with a really hard and dry country ham. However, the service staff has always been fabulous at taking care of the problem and making sure I'm satisfied. This is the absolute best restaurant! With its affordable prices coupled with its simply amazing down home country menu, you would absolutely be in love. Food is "OK." Not sure about all the good reviews for their country gravy. Both times we've been here, you could take the bowl, turn it upside down, and it hardly moves. It is like one big congealed glop of gravy. It also tastes like they don't cook down the flour enough when making the roux, it has an uncooked flour taste to it. On the other hand, their grits are runny, so go figure. Scrambled eggs - way overcooked. Bacon - also way overcooked. Last time we were there, hubby specified when ordering to not make it super crispy, and they obliged. I'm just not that impressed with their breakfasts (which is the only thing we've tried). I did try a bite of one of my hubby's pancakes, and it did taste good. Maybe I will just have to stick to that if we go again. Service has always been good. First time at Cracker Barrel. Well, actually my first time was on Veteran's Day just to get a piece of their Coca-Cola cake which was free to veterans. This was my first time actually ordering food. The first thing that struck me was the size of their menu. There are a million items to choose from. And they serve breakfast all day. Now I'm wishing I had taken a picture of their menu. Kinda made it hard to choose. My wife decided on breakfast while I ended up getting the maple jam and bacon burger. They have something called hash brown casserole they serve with breakfast and it tasted great. More exciting than regular old hash browns. They even mixed it in with the eggs. While driving to san marcos for the outlets me and the family got hungry and decided to try this place out since there are none in cali. Its a general store/restaurant which we were not used to but i guess time passed by quicker while we were waiting to be seated. after we sat down the service was quite attentive. Came asked for drink orders, took order and checked in on us every so often to refill drinks. The food was OK. I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, country green beans and fried okra. The steak was good, not over cooked and the gravy with mashed potatoes went together well. Fried okra i didn't really care for, tasted like cactus which i am not a fan of, but all in all it was a good meal. i the peach Iced tea was heaven in a glass. Exactly what i was craving at the time so im going to rate this place a 4. This place is good if your in the mood for country breakfast or southern food. read more

Sometimes it looks like the lines are crazy and they are, but what seems to be and hour wait from a glance ends up bring a 30 min or less wait that's worth it if you like good old American country comfort food. I've sad to see this place only have 3.5 stars as I've had good experiences every time I've come. Though I may never crave this place enough to drive all the way from Austin to get my fix of Southern American comfort food, it's definitely a "go to" when I'm in San Marcos. I've had decent quality food and service every time I've been and the experience of browsing through the country store out front combined with the food is pretty satisfying. I've had the ribeye, the haddock, the meatloaf, and the lemon pepper rainbow trout. I have to say the quality isn't "amazing" or "spectacular", but it's good. The sides are decent quality and the portion size is quite big. What helps tip this over to a 4-star is the cornbread and biscuits. Well, mainly the cornbread, but I thought the biscuits should get an honorable mention The cornbread is moist but not greasy, not dense at all, but fluffy instead, full of flavor but not overly salty or sweet, it's just a winner in its own right. There are very few cornbreads out there that are this good. And that's all I have to say about that. read more

It was my first time to visit a Cracker Barrel location and I went in with my son for breakfast today. The store in the front was busy and clean and I made my way to the host/hostess stand and signed in and was immediately taken to my table where I was seated and my server David C. came by and took my drink order. When he came back he told me the special for the day but I opted for something else. The food came out within 5-10 minutes and was hot and ready to be eaten. The breakfast I had was great..everything was very tasty including the homemade biscuits. The baked apples were good just odd they cut up the apples and baked them with the skin on the apple. Made it hard to chew up...but the food was good. My son made a mess and threw up all of his food at the table (he is only 10 months) so I cleaned him and the vomit up and went into the bathroom and it was pleasantly clean. The baby area was a little small but it was clean as was the rest of the restroom and smelled clean as well. Some places has nasty restrooms but this one I give a 2 thumbs up. The cashier process was slow because there was only 1 girl up in the front and a long line. Finally someone came to help her and got the line moving along and I was paid and out of there really quick with a sick child in hand. Desperate times call for desperate restaurant choices.. Haven't been to CB since the early 2000's. Back in Missouri, folks felt like this was a fancy Sunday morning breakfast place to go. I got my fill back in the day so avoided them at all costs. Was in San Marcos at the outlet mall doing some Christmas shopping and before heading back to Austin we needed sustenance and our options were limited. My friend wanted soup so we headed to Cracker Barrel. It was 1130a on a Friday and the place was packed. The store, the hostess counter, the aisles, people everywhere. Despite the cold we put our name in and went outside for a little air. Within the time promised our names were called and we were sat. Our waiter Daryl was fast and efficient. Once he knew we had been there before he was ready to take our order and get down to business. Guess the crowds have them focused on turning tables over more than building relationships with customers. We get it and were onboard. Ordered the oven baked "fried" chicken with vegetables and my friend ordered chicken and dumplings. Food came out within 5 minutes of ordering. The chicken was basically a piece of chicken breast with panko bread crumbs dumped on it. Not much flavor and nothing that made it anything but a dried piece of chicken breast. The vegetables were okay. The chicken and dumplings tasted okay but portion was pretty small and they looked like the dumplings you get out of a can at the grocery store. We ate. We paid. We left. We accomplished our goal but if we don't go back for another 15-16 years I am cool with that. read more

I'm surprised this place doesn't have more stars than it does. The Cracker Barrel is one of my favourite chain restaurants in the area. It's consistently tasty and the service is always friendly. If you go during peak times, be aware there will likely be a wait. It's the only place that I'm aware of that offers sit down lunch in the outlets, so it's a popular place. Their portion sizes are plentiful and the prices are very affordable. Plus they serve breakfast all day. How great is that? read more

The fact that this is a franchise restaurant takes the guesswork out of what's on the menu. Nevertheless I imagine each restaurant might vary a bit in quality simply because of the different people working there especially in the kitchen. That being said, I do want to complement the cooks in the San Marcos location. The food was very fresh and prepared perfectly. (Nuthin' like chicken fried steak with all the fixin's on Valentine's Day!) The server was polite and friendly and offered to give me iced tea in a to-go cup when I was ready to leave. This is a small gesture that feels really appreciated in Texas where the hot weather persists almost year-round. Being female, I couldn't resist perusing their country store at the front, especially the old-time candy and toys. We live quite a way from this location. Most of the time we dine in but the last few times we have had our puppy with us and needed to get the food Togo. The last two times something small has been missing out our order. This time my husbands entire order was missing. We should have checked but did not. We got all the way home and had to go back to get his order. The management and employees were nice and accommodating but did not offer to refund our money for all the time and gas spent going back also the portions and quality was not good!! Over the past several years I have watched the quality at this, my local Cracker Barrel restaurant, go down down down. Although this location is 20 miles from my home, it is the nearest Cracker Barrel. Yet, I am now driving an additional 20 miles or so to the next nearest location because the quality of the food and the service at this location has gotten so bad. I have eaten at Cracker Barrel restaurants from Texas to the Atlantic and sadly, my local eatery is the worst of the lot by far. As a matter of fact, with the exception of one meal at a Cracker Barrel in Mississippi many years ago, I have not had a bad meal at a Cracker Barrel outside of Texas. A few weeks ago my wife and I ate at this location in San Marcos TX. The food was horrid and the service was pathetic. The waitress gave us a hard time and was argumentative and couldn't get the order right. I called and complained and after speaking with two different managers, I was told to come by and they would make it right. So, I went by and the 'manager' made me re-tell the entire incident before he would comp me. He comped me by giving me a coupon to have two meals at this Cracker Barrel ........ No thanks says I.... I want to go to a different Cracker Barrel. So, he finally gives me a coupon for a different location. A couple of days ago my wife says to me "let's give them one last chance." So, off we go to the San Marcos Cracker Barrel. AND, once again the food was tasteless and COLD. I ordered the rib eye and baked potato with collard greens and fried apples. My rib eye steak was a mass of gristle, the potato was the size of a golf ball, and the collard greens were so cold (from a can) that I couldn't even melt a pat of butter in them. Yes, I could have sent it back, but I don't go out to eat so that I can have the opportunity to send food back to be done over. My wife had the fried chicken, which I tasted, and it tasted like old burned cooking oil YUCK..! Our waitress, who we named Miss Frowny because she never smiled, had the personality of a card board cut out. Speaking of which, the gal who decided to sweep the floors while we were eating was annoying too. AND, while we were eating I noticed some of the staff eating in the same room with us. They were getting up and going to the kitchen for food and coming back to their table. Probably not the best idea, and most likely this practice would be frowned upon by corporate. IF not, it ought to be.... All in all, this particular Cracker Barrel is the bottom of the barrel. In the future I will drive the additional 20 miles or so to eat at the next nearest location. read more

This was my first time at a Cracker Barrel and the service was terrible!! The young lady who was my husbands and mine waitress pretty much ignored us the whole night, our meal came incomplete (no biscuits or corn muffins and one of my sides was forgotten til I mentioned it to the young lady who wasn't our waitress and she looked at me like a deer in the Headlights), and while my husband was finishing his dinner our waitress came and tried to kick us out of the restaurant. The restaurant wasn't even full y'all! There was only like two other tables no more than three. I'll be calling the manager tomorrow and corporate. read more

Finally got the chance to eat breakfast here on the way to Schlitterbahn. I was honestly craving a sandwich and was a little sad that they didn't have any sort of non-breakfast options but I made do with some pancakes, turkey sausage, and something heavenly called hashbrown casserole. The pancakes were good, but not the top of my list. Same with the syrup. Yummy, but I wouldn't write home about them. The turkey sausage was a nice option and they were just about as tasty as the real stuff, and the hashbrown casserole - lets just say if I had daily access to this wonderful concoction it would be bad news for my waistline. Enter the Cracker Barrel. Ok the food is good here, it's just the staff that sucks. I received my food from kitchen help, and noticed a side was missing. After waiting at least 15 minutes for my waitress to show up so that I could point it out...she was annoyed at me ! After that, I never saw her again until she decided to bring my check. No offer at any point for an ice-tea refill, no offer for desert...just my check and a "have a nice day"... Then I get to the cashier, and patiently wait as other people pay. I am a fan of Cracker Barrel in San Marcos, TX. because if you live here you know there are not many good eating places in town. The staff is always friendly, and for the most part I've learned what to order that is good food. There Lemon Pepper Rainbow Trout is always good in my opinion. I go there just for it. I love their fried apples, although lately someone is not coring them right and you have to pick out the core parts. There bisquits are mostly always good, but sometimes you will get hard bisquits. I never order their chicken tenders because they are gross, but other then that I like the food. I like the environment, the women's restroom has always been clean, and I love looking at the shop while I wait for my food. read more
