Loved walking around here! We had a bit of some trouble finding it but nonetheless! Its beautiful! Lots of pretty flowers, fountains at the back, a view of a lake, trails, a Japanese garden. So many trees to shade from the hot heat. Only issue was the mosquitos. Get you some bug spray or wear long pants! I saw kids taking HS senior pics and heard an outdoor theater event in the background. I even saw two girls lounging on a blanket. They must've brought food to picnic on the grounds. It's such a cute place! I'd come back again just for a nice walk on some of the trails we didn't get the chance to explore. Seems like it was maybe a rich persons house and they gave it up to be maintained? Unclear but it's such a wonderful, seemingly hidden place! read more

Michigan is fortunate that this school opens the grounds to the public. It has wonderful landscaping and cultural buildings with sculptures throughout. For ticketed spaces you can visit the museum and formal gardens, but the grounds are free. There is a beautiful reflection pool, which looks onto a wooded waterway. We visited the Japanese garden, which is going under an update. The grounds surrounding the main house have formal garden arrangements. You can easily spend 30-60 minutes walking around and more if you visit the main house and cultural buildings. read more

On the way home on multi-lane Woodward, Jamie W. had a recollection of coming to Cranbrook House and Gardens as an adolescent on a school field trip. On a whim, he took a treacherous left turn off Woodward to see if his memory of the grounds was accurate. Indeed it was as we freely perused the manicured English-style gardens that cover over forty acres. Unfortunately the 1908 English Arts and Crafts-style house was closed the afternoon we visited, but the expansive grounds were quite idyllic as they included various styles of gardens that somehow melded together. They're flanked by classic sculpture, fountains, specimen trees, and a lake. Definitely worth the stop when you're in Bloomfield Hills since it's free for anyone to enter. Cranbrook, my love! A staple in Oakland County all my life! As a child, I came here for summer camps at the Science Institute, climbed that stegosaurus, and played about in the fountains. As a teenager, Cranbrook was my rival, as I went to Country Day for high school! As an adult, Cranbrook is one of my favorite places to walk with my dog all year round. We love coming here to appreciate the House & Gardens, walk around the lake, soak in the architecture & art, and share it all with our family and friends! Every time we come here, we see photoshoots happening (and maybe I have done a few for my dog too in the past) - whether it be senior photos, weddings, family photos, or what - Cranbrook is the perfect backdrop! It's dog-friendly, if you haven't gathered that yet, and the campus is so big that there is so much to do here. Nowadays, we love parking at the art museum and walking over to the House & Gardens and around the lake to the Japanese Garden and just doing that path regularly! It's a fantastic time every time we come here and I hope we can continue doing it for years on end. Thanks for being you, Cranbrook! read more

Cranbrook gardens is a beautiful place to spend the day and walk around. It's free and open to the public. There are so many photo ops for taking professional, family, and other types of pictures. It was also a wonderful place to put down the technology, get your steps in, and enjoy nature. Since Cranbrook also hosts a couple museums, you could make a day of exploring other parts of the campus on top of the gardens. But you could spend an hour or two exploring the grounds. The garden area has an adorable gift shop with little trinkets. The staff in the area was friendly and helpful, and let us know they do offer garden tours. There are not many gardens of this nature in the area. So it's nice that Cranbrook has such a beautiful piece of land to explore. read more

We went to the Cranbrook holiday Christmas, tea and tour. For $65, it was not anywhere near worth it. The tea was from a packaged Bigelow tea and the bread on the finger sandwichs was stale. Desserts were exceptional, service was exceptional and the house tour was very nice however not worth the money. I highly recommend The Meadowbrook Christmas tea, such a better option. read more

The Cranbrook gardens are absolutely stunning. Each time I come here I discover something new that I love about this place. You can spend hours here exploring as around every corner is a new hidden gem. Find some inner peace in the reflecting pond, catch a show or put on your own in the Greek theater, check out the owls (yes real ones) or the Japanese Gardens. So much to see and revel in. While you're there you can check out the Cranbrook house, Christ Church which is stunning, the school, the science center, greenhouse or art museum. You can make an entire day of it or just an hour or two. There is ample parking in the visitors lots. Be aware they have strict rules on no dogs, no bikes, and no picnicking. read more

This review is only of the gardens, the house was closed on the day we went (Saturday). This is such a beautiful place to have a nice walk outside and enjoy the scenery. It was one of those days that was too nice to be inside, but it was already mid-afternoon, we decided to check this out after having it on our list for a while. You just walk up, and you are suddenly surrounded by flowers and a gorgeous house. We spent hours wandering around. I imagine as the seasons change, so does the view. read more

Lovely gardens and trails to explore for free. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for walking the grounds. The garden house is sprawling with flowers, plants and fountains. Wonderful local garden destination to take the family in a day trip. Admission and parking is free, and there's plenty to look at. Our fav spot is the Japanese Gardens, with the running stream and bright red bridge. There's paved and dirt paths, depending on what shoes you brought that day. You can schedule a tour inside the Cranbrook house or just stroll around the garden. They usually have maps/pamphlets to guide you around the whole area. You can't get lost! Gorgeous outdoor area that's perfect for strolling through nature or doing a fun photoshoot with friends. We visited the area and we were blown away with architecture of the buildings and the well kept gardens and walking areas. Definitely recommend charging that phone because there are plenty of photo opportunities for you and a group of friends to enjoy yourselves with for an hour or two. Autumn is the best time to visit because of the colorful tree leaves, but I would imagine winter could be nice too. Parking is free and theres no admission fee. read more

My kids go there to school so I walk everyday there around no matter Rain or snow. It's calming. Its meditation. It's great Metro Detroit has beautiful places that is being taking good care of and constantly maintained. It gives it a historical touch. Summer concerts and their programs are nice. read more

My mom and I went on the Cranbrook house tour together. I've been to Cranbrook for the art museum, the science museum, and just wandering around the gardens ... very beautiful, any time of year ... but this house tour was the bomb! You need to arrange in advance to take the tour. (See website.) You'll see the residence of Cranbrook's founders, Ellen and George Booth, as well as the Art Deco house of the architect Eliel Saarinen. I think we saw a third house, but my memory is a bit foggy. Once you see the woven tapestries and rugs made and used by Loja Saarinen, you'll understand why the weaving program at Cranbrook is so strong. I saw a woven, rug-like coverlet that was used in the household as a way to stay warm in the winter. The family would sit on a wooden bench, and bring the coverlet up and over their legs. Very cozy, if you ask me! I remember the cool expanding table, which opens like an iris to increase its size. The globe table. Clever! This tour provided a very special glimpse into the lives of the people who started the Cranbrook school. Not everybody has a choice about living in such an artistic way, so it's a treat to see what beauties can be accomplished when art is at the forefront of one's very existence. You'll have to slip off your shoes at each house, and don slippers in order to protect the floors. My mom had a run in her stocking, but I said, "So what?" Not for young, rambunctious kids, but OK for teens. read more

What a treasure! My first visit and I'm smitten! The tour was full of history and our Docent was a wealth of knowledge. We enjoyed the tea and were treated to a lovely afternoon. Unfortunately, we were a day late for the gardens in bloom. The annuals were just removed. We still found a few things in bloom and totally loved the grounds. Can't wait to come back next summer and take in all the beauty of the place in full bloom! read more

The gardens were well kept and stunning with the exception of the Japanese Garden. They really can't claim that they have one--it's way back on the property and consists solely of a stagnant pond and token red bridge--a huge disappointment. We did not get to tour the house because it wasn't giving tours on the day we went, so I can't rate that. Not sure I'd bring young children either. read more

cranbrook school and ground is beautiful! it's a great place to take a walk in the trails or the gardens. the paths are gravel/mulch and some steps to get around so not super stroller/wheelchair friendly. admission to the gardens is free. i'm looking forward to taking the house tour and exploring the art and science museums in the future. read more
