Cool handouts that you can take with you
    Annette H.

Love the $2 off savings from Yelp! We came here all the way from Nor-Cal just to visit this place. It wasn't too bad. I guess my expectations were a little higher, having visited the Smithsonians in the East Coast. But for a small scale museum, it isn't too bad. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was how much TEXT was on the walls. I know they're trying to make the place Biblical with all the verses, but are they seriously expecting people to read all those verses? Way too many words. The live animal exhibits were interesting. A lot of the exhibits look like they'd be really fun for kids to touch and play. They also had paper handouts around the museum that you could take with you. I took a cool one about "The Chinese Language and the Creative Hands of God." ( see pic) They also had videos playing around the museum. The first one we watched was about Mt. St. Helens and it was really boring. I could only watch about 2 minutes before I got up and walked away. The narrator just talked too slow and couldn't capture my interest. The one I liked was something about Hitler, evolution or abortion. That was pretty interesting. Some of the exhibits looked pretty dated but others were quite interesting. Definitely a good attempt to cover the different areas of creation, the human body, etc. There was also a wall of evolutionists and creationists that was interesting to read. There's some "Scantibodies" building nearby that we also saw an exhibit for. I guess you can donate plasma and get paid for it. Not sure how that links to the Creation Museum but something to look into. Not the most impressive or innovative museum but 4-stars for the efforts. Oh, they also have really nice bathrooms!

We had fun visiting the museum. We did minimal reading of the informational placards, and it still took us about an hour and a half to see all of the exhibits, including The Tabernacle presentation (located inside the book store, separate from the main exhibition area). There were lots of replicas of various artifacts and live reptiles and birds which made for an interesting experience. The Tabernacle theatre presentation is 30 minutes long and shown four times a day (10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm) in a mini theater. When we went on a Tuesday afternoon, we were the only ones there, which was really nice. We liked the fun special effects (curtains opening and closing, items lighting up, etc). There's plenty of space for a stroller to move about, a water cooler available (next to the restrooms), and a clean and spacious bathroom.

Telling kids that animal sacrifice is OK if it's "for God".  Pass the jihad knife, anyone?

I'll start with the good: The fabricated exhibit items were excellent quality, very detailed, and well lit. BUT.... you'll need to check your brain, education, and common sense at the door. The premise here is that The Flintstones was a documentary, not a cartoon. The walls are lined with plaques that contain complete fabrications and mis-statements about science, biology, physics, and astronomy, all of which come to the conclusion "God must have done it". Don't bother looking for references to back up the absurd scientific claims, there aren't any. Any attempts to follow the logic of the claims on the walls is an exercise in frustration, as great liberties are taken with even basic use of the English language when it comes to "proven", "evidence", "theory" and "conclusion". Another group had a guide, who explained that "Only Earth has gravity, God did that for humans" and "God placed the sun the exact distance from the Earth to work best for humans". No attempt was made to explain why the Mars Landers aren't just floating away, or where the tides came from, and questions were not welcome. Oh, and they DO answer the burning question of "how did all of those dinosaurs fit in the Ark".. it says they were actually only 3 feet high and fit into a small cage. They even have a replica of that cage to drive that point home. The "Free Admission" sign that you can see via Google Maps Street View has been covered up, and it's now $7 to get a load of anti-logic.

This is a great attraction in the San Diego area! I loved the exhibits! They were very family friendly and interactive. It was also very informative.

Proof that they were advertised to be open December 31, 2021.

I would love to change my review in the future, but for now I have to give 1 star being that I wasn't able to go inside. They advertised as being open on New Years Eve, December 31, 2021, but after driving an hour and a half today, arriving at around 1:45, all gates were locked. I did try to call multiple times and only got a voicemail, I'm hoping to hear back and figure out why this happened. I won't be making my way back down until I hear back. This is such a bummer not only for the wasted time, gas, and miles to my car, but because I was really looking forward to this experience.

A very chatty docent offered me a tour of the normally off-limits restoration hangar, and I enjoyed that. There is a MiG 21 in there under restoration as well as a recently painted yellow T-34 (as I recall). My attention was on the MiG. Outside, there is an interesting lineup of military aircraft, including one of San Diego's own, an F-102. The Atlas missile is also a San Diego product, as is the pedestal-mounted drone. Unfortunately, all the aircraft are showing signs of weather damage, some more than others. At least the canopies have been covered with blue tarps. The placard describing the deep blue Douglas A2D Skyshark indicated that of the 12 aircraft produced, it is the only survivor. Why is this uniquely rare aircraft displayed outside? Can't room be found for it in the Balboa Park location? It's a Navy aircraft with folding wings, so it wouldn't take up much space. It is a restoration facility, as well as a sort of catch-all for miscellaneous artifacts, most of which are aircraft-related. That said, it has a haphazard look about it that perhaps can be improved.

Ok so I will split this into two reviews:…read more 1: the ships and actual adventure 2: the reservation process and customer service 1: booked a trip for the Spanish replica ship adventure the San Salvador and really loved it. The ticket also got you access to the other ships to walk around which was cool. But the coolest part was that San Salvador was sailed like they would have sailed it waaay back when. We got to see real rigging masts sails steering all being done by a crew and it was a totally amazing experience and such a perfect day. Bonus: we saw dolphins and it was a perfect day. Drawback: the gentlemen speaking throughout didn't talk into his mic often so missed a lot but oh well - who's really going for history?! such a good time!!. 2. I had a good with my tickets and called and tried to talk to folks in person and could never get someone. The tickets were cancelled but not refunded which was a bummer and staff in the kiosk even said they phone lines were messed up. A bummer. :(

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is honestly one of the most impressive history museums I've…read morevisited because the artifacts are the museum. You aren't just looking at history -- you're surrounded by ships that actually survived it. The Star of India, launched in 1863, survived mutiny, violent storms, collisions at sea, and decades carrying immigrants across dangerous oceans. Some sailors believed the ship was cursed after captains died during early voyages, yet somehow she survived long enough to become the oldest active sailing ship in the world. HMS Surprise shows the brutal reality of naval warfare during the Age of Sail. Ships like this once carried enough cannon firepower to destroy enemy vessels while sailors lived packed below deck surrounded by gunpowder, disease, and fear of battle. The Berkeley steam ferry even helped evacuate survivors during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake while much of the city burned. One of the most fascinating exhibits is the Soviet B-39 submarine from the Cold War. The inside is unbelievably cramped and gives you a real sense of what life was like beneath the ocean during one of the most dangerous periods in modern history. The USS Dolphin may have been my favorite. This experimental deep-diving U.S. Navy submarine helped test advanced underwater technology and launched the deepest-fired torpedo in naval history. The museum also includes the San Salvador, recreating the ship that explored California's coastline in 1542 -- long before America existed as a country. What makes this place incredible is the timeline it creates: 1500s exploration... 1800s global sailing... steam-powered industry... world wars... Cold War submarines... All sitting together in one harbor. This place doesn't just teach maritime history -- it shows how ships shaped exploration, immigration, trade, warfare, and entire empires.
