Ocean Beach gets a lot of attention, but I prefer a beach with a more depth of field view. Here you can see out to the bridge, Alcatraz, Angel Island, the city skyline, and Berkeley instead just the abyss of the ocean. Most of the time parking is easy but if you get to one of those beautiful hot and no fog SF days OMG the parking and line into the parking lot from the street is crazy. I'd highly suggest bringing food in as there isn't a lot around here. Dynamo Donuts, is close-by but for lunch type food I'd suggest picking something up at nearby Safeway first or walking 10 minutes to the Marina.

Well... I was going baker beach (been there a few times riding by car).... I actually went from pier 39 via bicycle to here (rode bart and the closest would be embarcadero).. and my maps said 20 ish more miles to baker beach but I got tired (still a bit out of shape but was 30 lbs heavier 3 months ago) This.. is actually a fine beach. Fine enough to Just to go relax and sit.. To ... just get away and reflect, and think. There's "Crissy Field" and "Crissy Field East" so overall covers a good area. Feel that breeze and the ambience of good people around you. Bring your pet dog if you like and there's a doggie wash / rinse area in front of the bathrooms. I sat on this nailed long piece of weathered wood out on the sand but it's hard and numbing my butt. There's benches tho but off the sand. You still get to see the Golden Gate Bridge but probably not up close as if you were at baker beach. Best bring a chair, blanket quilt etc if you wanna sit in the sand area. The cycling of a distance isn't that bad for me (of course I had to walk my bike due to pedestrian traffic and if you're going uphill being a struggle).

Beautiful beach. I went into the water in July, it was very cold but quite an experience that I will never forget! You can see the Golden Gate and the Bay. Make sure you warm up with a heater in your car and have 2 gallons or so of water that you can warm up in the car also beforehand.

    Close enough for solstice pic??

Part of the great Fort Chronkhite to Pescadero coastal areas! Enjoyed a short walk on a very cold windy Dec. 20. Sometimes beaches are best in their cold/wild day solitudes.

It is beautiful area for family gatherings together with 5-6 BBQ pits with benches. You can enjoy the beach as the Golden Gate Bridge is the centerpiece! There are trails you can walk with amazing view of the bridge and the beach. I came here on Labor Day weekend which was pretty busy but I was able to find a parking space around 5PM for the sunset view.

Fantastic place to view the Golden Gate Bridge from the other side of Baker Beach. Super soft sand like the desert. "Premium" even. We'll be back.

Beautiful getaway from the city noise! Did you know that Crissy Field was the first Air Coast Defense Station on the Pacific coast? Many of you probably did, but did you know who it was named after? It was named in honor of Major Dana Crissy who was one of the pioneers of air travel in the United States and the base commander of Mather Field in Sacramento, California. He died on October 8, 1919 when their plane crashed during a landing at Salt Lake City, Utah. Crissy Field was an airfield until the end of the Vietnam war in 1974 when the Army closed it to airplanes, but let helicopters continue to operate for a few more years. Then in 1994, as part of a national reduction in the number of functioning military bases, the Army decommissioned the Presidio and the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy took control of the area. At that time Crissy Field was declared a "derelict concrete wasteland" due to environmental concerns. However, after a successful campaign led by the Parks Conservancy that started in 1998, Crissy Field was transformed into a space that all San Franciscans could enjoy and opened to public in 2001. Crissy Field is a recreational paradise to those of us who live in the city. It offers amazing views of San Francisco Bay. There are has easy hiking routes as well as beaches and picnic areas. The beaches offer an enjoyable recreational space for families on warm and sunny days. There are areas where dogs may go off leash and run around or even swim! It is so much fun to watch dogs chase after a stick into the bay and swim back with it in their mouths! You can walk on the sand all the way to the end of the beach near West Bluff Picnic Area or take the trail just above the beach that leads to under the Golden Gate Bridge.

East Beach is an underrated SF beach that more people should know about! It's fairly quiet compared to other SF beaches, but there's a lot of runners, walkers, and people with dogs. It's good for picnicking and offers a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and downtown SF and the Palace of Fine Arts from many different vantage points while also still being close to Crissy Field and the Presidio. It can be foggy and windy (what does one expect in this city) but I think that just adds to the aura and view.

** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** I have to admit It's difficult for me to think of San Francisco as a beach town even though it's surrounded on three sides by water. Of course, there's Ocean Beach to the west and a speck of a beach at Crane Cove to the east (among other such specks). To the north are several beaches that actually feel more like beaches like Baker Beach with all them nekkid people and this more kid-friendly beach that happens to be surrounded by the city's big landmarks - the Palace of Fine Arts, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Wave Organ. Yes, the Wave Organ. Ga-bloot, ga-bloot. Not that there wasn't any nekkid people here either. Just one guy who was doing a happy dance in the sand and giving new meaning to getting jiggy with it, or more accurately, jiggly. But that didn't prevent families from parking themselves on the sand, though the populace consisted mostly of kite surfers and polar bear swimmers in wetsuits. The more rustic part of the beach westward was worth a stroll as well, and the adjoining Golden Gate Promenade takes you all the way to Fort Point (even though it's currently closed). Decided to head into the city and have dinner. Would you arrived early have the kids wanted to see…read morethe beach so I found this little Park. It was pretty packed and we had to kind of parked illegally but they were lots of people parked where I was so I was not in fear. It was a beautiful sunny day and they were tons of people swimming across the bay doing exercise. Swimming is my main form of exercise, and I thought this would be really nice to try it. Of course they all had wet suits on. The kids walked up the beach and I stayed near my illegally parked vehicle. No one on the beach or on the walkway was wearing masks. No one seemed concerned with social distance rules. I headed over to the old pier and got some bread bowls with clam chowder for the kids to eat at the beach. Also got some fried calamari. They enjoyed their dinner/picnic at this beach. One thing to let people know, a huge change in the city. They took out all of the parking and parking meters that were on the Embarcadero. Also, on the old pier, the restaurants closed at 7:15 PM. They used to be open till 10 PM and you could park all along the road. The only parking option was the expensive parking lot, however they do validate if you get there early enough.
