It is still possible to do a tasting without an appointment, but it is always a good idea to call ahead because the location is in middle of nowhere. You can always opt out on the tour and go straight to the tasting at the bar. This winery also sells the famous olive oil that you perhaps may have seen in the various restaurants in Portugal. Prices are decent, so stock up if you can or if your luggage allows it. Obviously, they also sell all the wines on the tasting menu lists. They do not ship to the United States, but they have referrals of their distributors (mostly in the East Coast and one from Seattle). Wines varies here, so have a good idea of what you might want to try. The profile from each of the menu is quite different and you can only choose four of each tasting menu. The tasting menu has at least 8 to 12 choices. If you have the car and the time, it is worth making a stop at this winery. Saluté!

Guide in Evora/Alentejo Area…read more If you are fortunate, as we were, to book with Prof. Libanio Murteira Reis, you will enjoy an authentic and depthful view into Evora and the Alentejo. Notwithstanding that his family extends back generations in Evora, what decidedly sets Prof. Reis apart is his expertise as a scholar and professor of history in the university there for thirty years and his work in sustainable tourism. We first saw him recommended in Rick Steves' guidebook and later found he has been consulted and interviewed by Fodor's, the BBC, National Geographic, Michelin, and numerous other programs and publications. One would be hard pressed to find a more engaging and knowledgeable guide with a contagious passion for his home. Our trip was made memorable by the very personalized approach that seems his ardent philosophy. In one instance, knowing that one of us had China roots, he arranged on the spur of the moment with a staff member at the Ducal Palace of Vila Vicosa for us to view a special collection of blue Chinese porcelain not usually on display to the public. Having visited Lisbon, and central and north Portugal, if I had it to do over again, I'd devote more time to the Alentejo, with its high concentration of amazing sites and experiences in a relatively small area. There's a lifetime of exploring there, but soak it in for at least a few days, if you can. I'm not a fan of typical tours, but in the case of Evora--so dense in history, symbolism, and multiple cultures-- we would have missed so much without a guide. It was well worth the reasonable expense.

Had a wonderful hearty fam lunch - tried acorn everything including coffee (must say the coffee had a good fragrance but tasted nothing like coffee...). They have a small store and we all got acorn flour - good gifts for anyone you know who likes wheat substitutes.

The hotels are decent, the locals are friendly and the sights are consuming enough for a day or two (Roman ruins, chapel of bones etc) Couched in this one night stay are an impressive array of local-sourced restaurants. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer to try more. Cartuxa Enoteca is one of several I had on my list to try and it did not disappoint. We ordered: Mushroom, sheeps milk cheese and mint gratin - outstanding! Sautéed squid, chilli, lemon and rosemary - great Sliced beef tongue- I didn't eat it but others at my table loved it! Fries in olive oil - good (I had the audacity to ask for mayo in a place that I believe make their own oil - they politely declined and said "no sauces - only olive oil taste") A couple of diff glasses of their reserve red - both were delicious The olive oil pudding - an absolute must try. I left extremely satisfied.
