How about lumber, snuff, black powder, knives, pistols, cotton products, grist, buttons, nails, iron wire, paper, and clothes wringers. That's quite an eclectic list! Now be honest, did you know what grist is? I didn't so I looked it up. It's a processed grain that is ground into meal or flour. This is a one-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It is fastened to an exterior wall near the main entrance of Middlefield Town Hall at 393 Jackson Hill Road. The marker was dedicated in 1981 and is in excellent condition

She is standing on an eagle-shaped bow of a ship. Nike is quite the fashion plate - and she sure loves her fashion accessories. She's wearing a helmet, a wind ruffled gown, and a sword hangs off her left hip. In her right hand she carries an overhead torch and in her left hand she carries a shield with the American Flag and Connecticut seal. There is a sculpted military panel on each side of Nike -a rifleman and a sailor. Below Nike is Spanish American War medallion. The statue's base morphs into a stone bench on both sides of the statue, engraved with the words: TO COMMEMORATE THE VALOR AND PATRIOTISM OF THE HARTFORD MEN WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WAR WITH SPAIN 1898 The engraving on the bench is badly soiled and worn out. A plaque on the rear of the monument reads: Erected by The City Of Hartford 1927 Richard J. Kinsella-Mayor Norman C. Stevens-Mayor (8 Commissioners also named)

As my helpful e-mail read, "There is a memorial on the South Capital lawn between two weeping beech trees". Basically it's very close to the sidewalk on Capital Avenue in front of the gold domed Capital Building. This simple memorial consists of a bronze plaque placed on the front lawn. It was dedicated exactly one year after that terrible day. The plaque's inscription reads: IN MEMORIUM September 11, 2001 We mourn the victims, we honor the heroes Dedicated - September 11, 2002

This monument honors Burlington's Civil War vets on one side and World War One vets on the other side! Curiously, the Civil War plaque is in a lot better condition than the WW One plaque. The Civil War plaque bears the inscription: The Town Of Burlington Has Not Forgotten Her Beloved Brothers Who Offered Their Lives To Preserve The Union 1861 - 1865 A list of 88 names follows. Some of the names are preceded by an asterisk., The plaque is also dedicated to "and those known but to God". The World War One plaque bears the inscription: Let Us Hold In Honored Memory Those Who Served Their Country In The World War 1917 1919 A list of 43 names follows. The plaque is in poor condition and is very hard to read.

As you approach the University of Hartford on Route 189 your eyes might spy something very unusual…read more- a brightly painted and very large ship's anchor sitting on the front lawn. The three-ton and thirteen-foot tall anchor was salvaged from the USS Hartford. It was commanded by Rear Admiral David Farragut, and played a role in the civil war, especially in the battles of New Orleans and Vicksburg. The USS Hartford was in service from 1859 until 1926. When the Hartford was decommissioned in 1926, it was stored in Charleston and Norfolk. It fell into disrepair, with a leaky hull and rotted decks. Attempts to restore the Hartford ran into congressional delays and budget trouble. Thirty years later, in 1956 Congress was still debating it's restoration when the Hartford sank from a pump failure. This was the end of the ship; on November 6, 1957 it was towed out to sea, demolished into pieces, soaked with incendiary liquids and set on fire. Several mementoes were saved and put on display in Portsmouth, VA. Later that year, the Hartford Historical Landmarks Committee requested possession of the ship's bell and bow anchor. The bell went to the City of Hartford, and the anchor went to the brand new University of Hartford in March, 1958. At a dedication ceremony Representative Ed May said "Many historians now claim that the USS Hartford was the salvation of the nation during the Civil War." It has become a custom among University of Hartford students to paint or decorate the anchor, today it sported a bright white coat of paint with red lettering all over. The Anchor has become the centerpiece of many University of Hartford traditions. It's on-line newspaper is called "The Anchor" and the prestigious "Anchor Award" is awarded to those alumni who have achieved high levels of professional excellence.

It consists of a four-sided shiny stone base below an open white stone frame. Below the frame, suspended over the base is a gold fire bell, and above the frame is a gold Wethersfield Fire Department helmet. There are four inscriptions on the sides of the base; including the significance of the bell, a memorial to two firefighters killed in the line of duty, and one dedicating the memorial to Wethersfield's past, present, and future firefighters. It's a pretty sweet memorial.

The Connecticut River - New England's longest is soo beautiful especially in the fall. Blue waters…read morewith the sun bouncing off at places like sparkles from a fire cracker, and the sides lined up trees with all possible colors of leaves except green ! But....We were a week early so missed the fall color enchantment....the river was beautiful nevertheless. Another interesting historical piece, all those railroad bridges along. Some of them are rusty and defunct but make a great location for a pic. We stopped at one such bridge to capture some frame worthy memories. The Connecticut River is called a " Blueway" and is known for connecting Canada all the way to Long Island. Also known for its biodiversity, scenic beauty, and historic importance for indigenous trade. There was a little local store with Native Indian artifacts like pots and stuff. The colorful shop just popped up out of nowhere, that is, until I read that Native Indians played a very important role in New Hampshire history and still, very much live in these parts. Bought a few trinkets to carry home and left on our way. The River and its blue stayed with me

The Connecticut River was my route to Shangri-La as a boy. My dad and I would take our 18-foot…read moreoutboard motor boat across Long Island Sound at its widest part from Mattituck Inlet and follow the river north. There were lovely little side tributaries we'd explore, including Hamburg Cove and a really intriguing unnamed jungle-like stream which somehow left the river and then came back to it, so turning back wasn't necessary. Gillette Castle, high on a bluff, was always a great landmark to look forward to. And every few miles an automobile bridge or railroad bridge would cross over our heads. The construction of these bridges was always fascinating, as you'd view them from afar before eventually motoring underneath them. The trip always required an overnight stay on land somewhere, usually with a docking at Wethersfield Marina in Wethersfied Cove. We never would quite make it to Hartford, because my dad said the river wasn't navigable beyond there and our nautical chart ended prior to the capital city. Now I'm a resident of a small city in Massachusetts which brushes up against the banks of the mighty Connecticut. Mostly a coincidence, except I know that I wanted to live in this region based, in part, on those wonderful youthful excursions. To this day I get a thrill whenever I cross the river on any of the bridges above Hartford. You see, I can look out the car window and examine what I never got to enjoy while cruising its waters on our boat! If it were only navigable beyond Hartford, it would be a cinch for that extra star!
