I'm extremely sad to say, but this is one of the worst places to eat in Hilo. Just why, is it so expensive for absolutely the worst food!? I got the chicken strips (because, who can mess up strips!? Like they usually are frozen and you fry to order) Well well they proved me wrong! Their "chicken strips" were very thinly sliced dried out chicken breast. Barely breaded and most likely thrown into a fryer until dried but not crisp. Yeah that junk was $17 for 4 tiny dried out chicken pieces. I didn't eat it. It was almost like a smack in our face, to serve it to us (look at the picture for reference) I'm sure even the waitress wouldn't eat it! Side of fries were $13 for old fries! Old fries! My husband got the burger and it was like a frozen May's patty on a store bought bun for $27 dollars!!!!! Please do not eat here. There was someone singing, the output was echoing in the entire place. So we couldn't even here each other speaking.

We had great service, yummy food, in a nice cool sports-bar. They had huge windows with ocean views, and multiple TVs with lots of different sports. We tried the Mauna Loa fries (delish, kinda like poutine) and each had a burger. The burgers were cooked perfectly and had both flavor and fresh toppings. We ended up taking home the sides and half the appetizer - still good later on! Well worth the stop!

My husband and I wanted to eat some burgers and wings while we watch the FIFA World Cup so we figure we come to a sports bar with good burgers. My husband ordered his hot wings, burger and drink and I ordered my burger with drink. We were kind of surprised that they had hula on all the TVs. So we asked if they could put on the FIFA World Cup, the waitress didn't know what that was so I had to explain that it's the men's world soccer championships going on. She said they were trying to find the channel. They finally did and we were enjoying ourselves. We got our burgers pretty quickly and as we were almost done eating them, my husband asked if she forgot to bring our hot wings. We were ready to leave. She never came around to refill our drinks and she forgot to order our hot wings. Oh well, I guess it's hard to find a sports bar that is actually a sports bar. All televisions were on but no music or any sound to cover the silence besides people talking. Will try again next time

This is such a fun spot for a good bar and grill vibe! Family friendly but also perfect for a younger crowd night out. Our servers name was Andrew and he did a phenomenal job checking in and offering suggestions. They were out of a lot since they were so busy during the day but they still had such great menu options and Andrew was able to help out a ton. The food came out hot and tasty and we left with full bellies and a new T Shirt!

Cronies Bar & Grill is my go-to in Hilo when i'm craving a great burger. If you aren't a big burger person, their other items are not to be slept on either. Their Mauna Loa Gravy-Cheese Fries is a perfect appetizer that can be shared amongst your whole party. If you're not that big into bar food, they definitely have one of the best steaks you can find anywhere in town. Off of their "not-so-secret" secret menu, the Lyman Steak might be the most delicious thing on their menu. They have multiple TV's that span across the entire restaurant, making it easy to catch all of your favorite sports. The ambiance of the restaurant is perfect for football Sundays! The servers are all great as well, but our server Mathew made the experience a 10/10. I recommend this place to everyone.

Cronies has some of my favorite bar foods. I've always been a fan of the burgers. It's a mix of your classic burgers and one of a kind like the "loco burger". I was impressed with the service and how fast the food came out. I actually went with a friend who worked there so maybe that's why we were seated immediately lol. The steak and salad were also very good and the portions were bigger than expected. The prices have gone up from previous years but definitely a place to check out if you're in downtown hilo.

Chicken burger , tots , chicken sandwich yummmm.

The restaurant is nice, cozy atmosphere. Service was outstanding. Food was absolutely delicious. Try the tater tots!!!!! Prices are reasonable. Restrooms are very clean. My family will be coming back here again. They all left with their tummy's full.

We had the Tamashiro burger which was everything inside, from bacon to two different cheeses, onion rings, mushroom, onion etc.

You definitely want to make a reservation in advance, especially if there are cruise ships in port. Otherwise, you're going to wait in line. I would say that the very best thing on the menu is the Teriyaki Flank Steak Appetizer ($19)....this thing is SICK. We ordered the appetizer and it is the most unique Teriyaki steak I have ever had. The teriyaki sauce is rich and just amazing. Just order it. I am still craving it. We also ordered the Lilikoi Hoisin wings and SON OF TIKI DAVE ordered the Lemon Macadamia Chicken ($28) which was delicious, too. They have a full bar and the Mai Tais are awesome. We ordered a couple a piece. Ambience and service is great. And with your receipt, you get at 10% discount at Wilson's Shave Ice across the street. I got the bleu cheese burger medium rare, a solid choice that I was satisfied with and the crispy fries and sweet potato fries were yummy too! Shout out to the bartender working on 6/18 when a drunken patron bothered our group. We were close to leaving anyways and I made sure to speak my mind to him, but the situation was handled well by the bartender and the staff was apologetic despite it not being their fault so hopefully the rest of their night went well! We're staying close by so I drive over and make the takeout order in person. Super easy and a member of staff is there to take my order as soon as I walk in the door. After taking my order and payment, I'm told to hang outside at a red bench in their courtyard which I guess you could also eat at but also serves as their de facto holding pen as another guy is also out there doing the same thing I'm doing. After 15 or so minutes everything is brought out to me. Caprese Burger - California Burger - Bacon Cheese Burger Let me start with what's good. The burgers were all cooked to their requested temperatures. The fries were also decent as well and many packets of ketchup and mayo were put in the bag if needed. What's not good. The buns are not toasted so in a takeout environment they become straight up wet diaper soggy and it's also disconcerting when you ask for the bacon to be cooked crispy and it's served white/soggy/limp and barely cooked. Everything seemed nice enough inside and if ever back on the Big Island I would probably try HBJ again, but if you're taking online orders, please enable the platform and if not, remove the website prompt that you do and cook the bacon dammit, wet noodle is never fun. We were in the mood for Poke and rather than get it at the local market, we decided to check out 'Bite the Eye'. Best Local Grindz in Puna - Support This Inspiring Business!…read more Last night, we finally dined in at Bite the Eye, and let me tell you--it was worth every bite! We've ordered takeout before (because let's be real, when you find local fresh fish, you don't let that go), but stepping into their shipping container-turned-restaurant was a whole different experience. Vibes? Immaculate. Food? Busted my mouth. The Setup: A Unique Industrial-Rustic Dream This isn't just a restaurant--it's a masterclass in entrepreneurship. Owners Christine and Kaiana built a fully functional commercial kitchen inside a shipping container while transforming another into a stylish dining/bar space. The open-air setup with a heavy-duty tent, rustic wood, custom murals, and ambient lighting creates the most relaxing, family-friendly dining experience we've had in a long time. And get this--they're bringing in karaoke and open mic nights soon! You already know I'm coming back ready to SING & GRIND. The Food: Fresh, Local, Made With Hustle My husband, a culinary genius (and harshest food critic), was blown away by the flavors. The fish is locally sourced, the sauces are next-level, and there's something for every palate--from fresh poke to comforting island favorites. Why You NEED to Support Them Christine and Kaiana aren't just business owners; they're hustlers fighting to do things the right way. They've jumped through every legal hoop to make this dream happen for their community, and it shows in every detail--from the seamless teamwork in the kitchen to the warm, welcoming vibe. ‍‍‍ Perfect for Families As a family of six, we don't just go anywhere. But here? Kid-friendly, safe, and stress-free. The space is tucked away from the main road, and even better--they have a friendly dog that played fetch with the kids. My Final Take? If you love fresh fish, support local, and want to experience something new, you need to go. And if you haven't yet--GO NOW. Thank me later. Bite the Eye - Puna, Hawai'i 5/5 - Will be back (and probably singing at karaoke night) This shipping container restaurant is changing the game in Puna! Fresh local fish, chill vibes, and coming soon--karaoke?! You NEED to try this place. #SupportLocal

My wife and I stopped by for pre-dinner drinks and we absolutely loved the drinks that we were able to try out. I started out with a cocktail called the "Spam Dram", a crispy Spam fat-washed barrel-proof bourbon, combined with seared Spam and nori syrup and topped off with a spam musubi garnish. As one might guess, this drink was presented in a spam musubi tin, and atop the bed of crushed ice was an *entire* spam musubi. The drink was a perfect representation of spam musubi in a glass -- sweet, savory, and full of umami. Props to whichever bartender put together this creative drink. The next drink I ordered was the "Smoky Bear", another bourbon based cocktail. This one had bird's eye chili essence in it, and was much closer than your traditional Old Fashioned, except it had an incredible amount of smokiness and a punch of heat to it as well. If you enjoy stiff drinks with complexity, look no further than this cocktail. While we were seated at the bar, we overheard somebody close to us mentioning a password special that had been posted on the Instagram page of The Hidden Nene. We checked their latest story posted two hours earlier and the password special for the day was a "fizz me baby one more time", a strawberry and yuzu gin fizz. My wife ordered this cocktail as her second drink and loved how refreshing the drink tasted. Overall, if you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to check out The Hidden Nene if you're in Hilo.
