He also told us which parts were important for the exam, which were not, and how to study and prepare for the exam. John was down-to-earth, goes at a good pace, and easy to understand. The only thing I would advice students is the PM Academy practice exam questions are nothing like the actual PMP exam questions. Use the practice exam to get used to the time pressure and learn how to time manage. I would not get hung up on the practice exam and keep on repeating it until you get 75%. As long as you know the material well (at least 50% of the PMP exam is agile) and know how to time manage, then you are good.

Some of the substantive law lectures were excellent (Ks, Con Law, Wills/Trusts). Before signing up, I heard their MBE materials sucked; but, I found them to be very helpful. The video tutorials explain each question and the answer to help you easily get down to two choices and pick the correct one without guessing. Contrary to what I heard, the MBE prep was good. The Amp exercises were a waste of time.

Preface: I took the…read moreBar Exam in another State and passed it on the first try back in 2008. I moved to California to take the Bar Exam, having already taken Bar Bri. In the other state, I studied for about 3 weeks - from July 6 to July 26. I passed by 16.6 points and did, maybe, 7 practice essays. In California I started preparing over a month early and did about 60-70 practice essays. PROS: Content: Bar Bri has an excellent staff of professors teaching the substantive law. If you actually pay attention during the lectures, they are superb and the professors are often funny (Rich Freer and David Epstein are two examples) and often in self-depracting ways (Paula Franzese and Erwin Chemerinsky come to mind). They have good war stories which are encouraging. You're getting top-notch bar review lectures with these guys. Format: I attended the Live lectures which took place at 9AM to 12 or 1PM. I'm the kind of person who won't get up in the morning to study for the bar unless I have to (although when I took Bar Bri last time in a different state it was at a comfortable 1-4 class). Forcing me to get up at 6AM to beat the traffic to San Francisco on the bridge did WONDERS for my study habits. I only missed one [substantive] lecture and it was a video lecture. Most of the lectures were video but the live lectures were always a nice treat. Essay Workshops: In particular Professor Sakai, who is a multiple bar exam repeater himself, offered a very honest assessment of how to prepare for the essays: do them. Do them to learn the substantive law, do them to practice for time. Don't just sit in bed and circle MBE answer choices. Force yourself to write a full 1-hour essay per subject over and over and give yourself time crunches. The Performance Test lecture by Lisnek was also very good because he made us prepare an actual PT in class. Most people don't practice PT's, period. The Website: Here's the key: the website has all of the "Early Bird Lectures" and "Law School Lectures" already up on the website long before the class starts. I watched all of them. Less than a month after that, they put the actual substantive lectures up on the website that will be done in class. I watched all of those the month before Bar Bri started. That way I had already reviewed each substantive area 1-3 times before the class even started (I think I've heard enough of Erwin Chemerinsky for a lifetime between this bar review and last). The point is if you have a short attention span like myself, you won't pay 100% attention during the class. But if you're hearing it for the 2-5th time, yeah it will finally stick. CONS: Price: Though I can't really complain because as a second bar exam taker from another state, I got a discount, the price is very steep. Expect to save up or take a loan out for the bar review process. Essay Grading: This has to be the strangest and least intellectually honest part of the class. Bar Bri seems to instruct their graders to purposely fail everyone to motivate them to work harder. This is negative for a few reasons. Option #1: People will be demotivated and stop trying. That happened to me the first time when I received a low score on a subject I knew inside and out. Option #2: People will just ignore the Bar Bri grades. That happened to me the second time. I just added 5 points to every essay Bar Bri graded. I received 3 60's, a 65 and a 55 on the Performance Test. You need an overall of 65 on all to pass the essays. And I passed the bar exam. My advice is to just ignore Bar Bri's grading and seek an extra service to help with grading essays if you need it. But if you prepare correctly the vast majority of essays you write will not be graded and you can just compare it to the model answer, which moves us on. Model Answers: These model answers in the essay books were written by very intelligent people with all of the time in the world. The Bar Bri graders seem to just compare our graded essays with the model answers. They were not done in 60 minutes with other essays done right before that. On the flip side, the model answers are very positive as well. If and when you don't finish all of the essays, start memorizing the model answers, It will do wonders when you regurgitate them on the actual exam. Bar Bri's Schedule: Bar Bri's regimented schedule is unrealistic and not geared toward people who have different strengths and weaknesses. It's not flexible. Find out what's best for you (for example I took the no-MBE Attorney's Exam and just ignored all the Bar Bri AMP and MBE lectures) based upon your strengths, weaknesses and needs and do that. Even one of the Professors told us to ignore the schedule. No one keeps up with it and if you try and follow it you'll just end up thinking you're deficient. I didn't even look at it. Why 4 Stars? Because I passed the February 2013 California Bar Exam. The overall pass rate was 41%. And if you put in the work, and have faith, it might work too.
