By the time we got to the peace, half of the church had introduced themselves and wanted to know who I was. So, for the first time since I moved here 10 years ago, I have real friends at church. I'm just not another guy in the pew. There's tons of young families, lots of kids, and activities (most of which provide licensed childcare). A typical month has several dinners, a wine study & bible tasting (that's not a misprint), classes, and a tennis league. Whatever age, nationality, orientation, and whether you have kids or not, they want you to feel welcome and a part of the community, and there's stuff for you to do in addition to worship. The pastor is great, but it's the whole community that makes St. Catherine's home for us. It just feels right.

There are multiple congregations on site, but they all belong to Fort Bend Community Church. This is a historically Chinese church, with Chinese language ministers and congregations. They also have a contemporary English service, with one English Pastor. However, all the other ministers also preach during the English service, in their semi-broken English (which is pretty much all the comedy you will get during the sermon). The church is trying to go the multiethnic route, which is evident by the name of the church. They removed the "Chinese" from the title and set up the church to be "accepting" of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. However, all the ministers are Chinese which makes it seem like other ethnicities are guests and not part of the church family. I attend the English service only. The preaching is decent. They typically follow a "explain the Bible passage" model of preaching, which usually reduces the congregation to a bunch of idiots. Seriously, I understood the passage the first time I read it...I really didn't need it preached at me. However, that's the path taken by the majority of churches in Houston, especially Chinese churches. I visit this church though because I have gotten to know the people, which are very nice...also, I just can't seem to find a better church (I also don't look very hard - Bedside Baptist is just too tempting sometimes).

It is predominantly Asian, and that comes with cultural issues in itself, but there are people there who really want to grow and learn about God and who are passionate about missions. Much of their mission work focuses on Asia though, but because of that there are many new believers from Asia that have come to the church. The Mandarin and Cantonese church services are growing a lot from what I hear, and that is thanks to God and also great leadership from Pastor Lam. The demographic of the church is mostly people from Sugar Land so bear in mind that it is a church in a rich suburb. People may not be as aware of issues outside that demographic, but there are many strong Christians there that are aware. Like any other church or people group, there are good people and there are bad people, but we all need Jesus and none of us are truly "good" anyways. I will continually pray for this church and hope for more growth as they continue to do ministry.

I fell on hard times & I do mean hard times.My 15 year old son (at the time) & I had to resort to sleeping in my car.I went to the church with my son & spoke with a particular individual. (I will not name that individual because GOD knows who he is & I am sure that he could NEVER forget my son & I.)I tearfully shared my situation with this man as embarrassed as I was & needless to say we were told that there were no funds available to assist with housing or any other type of financial assistance.Although he did offer Bethel's Food pantry.I looked at him with this hole in my soul & said to him isn't there a Benevolence Fund?I know there has to be one. I have given to it myself for years.I said I have been a faithful member of this church.My son & I are homeless & there is nothing you all can do to help me?He said...No.He then gave my son & I a list of homeless shelters.I was in shock, hurt,devasted,and most of all humiliated.The one place I thought I could turn to turned me away.I looked at him in his eyes with my own full of tears and said Thank you for your time and GOD bless you.We walked out of there & have never returned & never will. He did tell us that he would call us to "check" on us & that call never came.I was so distraught that I contemplated suicide.My son & I slept in my car in a Planet Fitness Parking lot for the next three weeks.Going inside in the evenings so he had somewhere to do his homework.Then going inside in the mornings to shower & off to school he went & off to work I went.(I had paid for a 6 month membership in the beginning of that year).I never gave up hope,I stayed in prayer & was able to get in another place.I would like to make something very clear.Pastor August is a man that was put on this earth to do exactly what he is doing & he is an amazing pastor. I truly believe that if he knew how my son & I were turned away like that he wouldn't have been pleased. And no I did not contact him or anyone else at the church. I was too humiliated after sharing my personal journey with that person only to be told I couldn't be helped I just couldn't do that again.The reason I am sharing my story on this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon is to tell anyone that is struggling with something there is a light at the end of the tunnel.And just be careful who you invest your time,faith,money,& energy in not everyone or everything has your best interest at heart.One last thought before I go.NEVER & I MEAN NEVER EVER place your faith in man he will always disappoint you.But always trust in GOD he never sleeps & will always see you through. Secondly, I'd like to thank Diana N for her updated mass schedule on her review. It's impossible to post them as their business hours. I've heard what I see today is the newer building behind the older church. It has a best Feng Shui to overlook a big open field at Boone Road Park. Everyone I interacted with are very friendly. This is most diverse church with higher Asian population in Alief than any other Catholic churches. They also have services in Spanish. I'm mostly here in the afternoon, except on the Easter morning. One other reason I'm so attached to this church is their choirs. I got hooked by listening to the choir sang at Christmas eve and Easter services.
