When we signed our daughter up for the daycare center at Cajun Fitness Youngsville, we explained her disabilities in great detail. We made sure the manager and the employees understood exactly what to expect from her and what her needs were. We were specifically told by the manager and two other employees that they would have absolutely no issues caring for her for the 30 to 40 minutes we needed to work out. The first two times we brought our daughter, I had to take her out of the daycare early. That, in itself, was completely understandable. I know my daughter can sometimes become overwhelmed, and I understand that caring for a child with special needs can require patience and flexibility. The third time, however, was extremely concerning. Two teenage employees came out onto the gym floor with their phones pointed directly at me while they were on FaceTime with the manager. The manager was lying in her bed, in the dark, at 4:00 in the afternoon, while having the employees hold their phone in my face so she could talk to me half asleep. The fourth time was the final straw. After I finished my workout, I went to pick up my daughter. There was one teenage employee alone in the daycare center with the children. She was sitting approximately 10 feet away from my daughter and repeatedly yelling at her. My daughter was not doing anything that warranted that kind of response. The employee did not see me because her back was turned toward me. I simply said, "Please do not yell at my daughter." The manager then came up behind me with an incredible amount of attitude and immediately told me, "She was not yelling at her." I told her that I was literally standing there and had heard the employee yell at my daughter at least three times before I said anything. Another employee sitting at the front counter then began raising her voice at me and said, "I have an autistic child." I responded, "Then you should know that yelling at them does no good." She replied, "I'm not going to argue with you," while sitting at the counter eating. What bothered me most was that instead of acknowledging my concern or taking responsibility for what had happened, the manager continued to defend the decision to allow a teenage employee to repeatedly yell at my disabled child. We left the gym immediately. After that experience, we began going to the Cajun Fitness location in Broussard instead. I want to make it very clear that our experience at the Broussard location has been completely different. Our daughter has had absolutely no issues with the daycare there, and the employees have been wonderful with her. Today, approximately a week and a half after the incident, the manager from the Youngsville location called us. In an extremely rude and disrespectful tone, she informed us that our contract had been terminated and told us that if we came back to any Cajun Fitness location, she would press trespassing charges against us. When my significant other explained that he had been a member there for years, her response was simply, "Oh well." This is especially frustrating because we did not continue going to the Youngsville location after the incident. We simply chose to take our business to another Cajun Fitness location where our daughter was comfortable and where we felt she was being treated appropriately. We also attempted to address the situation before speaking with higher management, but nothing was ever resolved. I am sharing this because I want other parents of children with special needs to be aware of our experience. If you have a child who is autistic, nonverbal, profoundly disabled, or otherwise requires specialized care and understanding, please think carefully before trusting the Youngsville Cajun Fitness daycare with your child. Our experience at Cajun Fitness Broussard has been completely positive, so this is not about every Cajun Fitness location. This is specifically about what happened to our family at the Youngsville location. Our children deserve patience, understanding, compassion, and appropriate care. Parents should not have to worry about whether their child is being yelled at, ignored, or treated as an inconvenience simply because they communicate or behave differently. Something needs to change at Cajun Fitness Youngsville. I am sharing our experience so that other families can make informed decisions about where they choose to leave their children.
