With the new renovations of the church as of recent, you can tell that it's very well taken care of and loved by all. My son was baptized here and ever since, have felt a strong connecting celebrating mass here. I loved that they now have QR codes for mass donations, which makes life easier when you forgot your envelope at home or you just don't have cash on you. The priests are inspiring with their sermons, and am grateful to have so many opportunities to participate in events, functions, and fundraisers that support the church as well as the school.

My experience of today's inaugural swing jazz concert brought to mind an era of homespun Brooklyn that one rarely stumbles upon in this era of corporate sponsorships and strategic branding. The musical lineup today (7/20/08) was led by James Weidman, accompanyist to Abbey Lincoln and Cassandra Wilson. He was supported by seasoned musicians Quentin Franklin on bass, Charene Dawn on vocals and Craig Haynes--the son of the legendary Roy Haynes--on drums. Firebrand curator Keisha St. Joan mesmerized with her spun silk vocals on "A Beautiful Friendship". Apparently the musical lineup will rotate and I expect subsequent Jazz Vespers will equal or surpass in quality. I'm not a jazz head and can easily get restless. Happily that was not the case today. Though not a traditional church service, Rev. Andrea Payne took the pulpit at intervals to lead a meditation, and later to expound on the power of love and prosperity while taking a poke at the credit card industry. She takes her message seriously, but not herself and her willingness to be vulnerable onstage makes church seem like a pretty neat place to go on a Sunday. At the time of this writing, the event was free and the donation basket was passed at the end of the performance. Call in advance to confirm scheduling.

I was highly impressed with this church…read more I visited on a magically warm February Sunday morning, and the weather seemed to foretell what was to come. Yes, the church was friendly, organized, and heartfelt, with a compelling service that any seeker would've found enjoyable -- but, what set Unity East apart was its stark authenticity. Which is to say: there was truth spoken here, as evident in the service's subtleties as in the final message. This is, for me, vital in any sort of spiritual endeavor (and, in my experience, quite rare, even in other Unity ministries) -- and this church had it. When all was said and done, I left feeling deeply nourished, as only an encounter with real, universal truth can invoke in me. My deepest thanks to all associated with this most important work. In spite of my lack of faith, however, this church has been such a key institution over the course of my life, that I love it and can't imagine my life without it. It's where I went to nursery school and preschool and made my first childhood friends, and it's where I went to my first Greek school class. It's where my brother and many of my cousins were christened, and it's the church that my family visited for many years during the Greek Orthodox Easter Holy Week. Its "Gold Room" is where I remember spending many a New Year's Eve during my childhood, and its Greek festivals during special weekends were where I loved eating souvlakia and loukoumades, shopping at the massive flea market set-up in the parochial school gym, and riding on the Ferris Wheel set up outside with my cousin. With or without a belief in the teachings of the Bible and Jesus, Three Hierarchs Church is an important part of who I am. I could not write a review for Three Hierarchs and fail to mention the indomitable Father Eugene Pappas, the figure who most embodies what Three Hierarchs means for everyone who has ever been there, for better or worse. He is a controversial figure in the community, and maybe that is why he is my lifelong favorite priest, and a figure whom I regard with a mixture of awe and fear. I stand among the few in my own family who view him with admiration, because many are put off by his admittedly caustic brand of humor, and his befuddling combination of sincere compassion for the community mixed with an imperious disdain for what he decries as the failure of his congregation (always changing) to better support the Church and Christianity itself by living as better Christians. I imagine he would regard my own lack of faith with disappointment, but it is what it is; you can't force faith. I think that's why I feel comfortable at Three Hierarchs, and with Father Eugene's sermons; he speaks a language that you can relate to regardless of what you might believe. My connection to this Church is more about the community, and even if I might not know, or even like, everyone who goes to Three Hierarchs, there's a realness and history that connects us all. There's a warmth to that, as soothing as the fragrant incense that the priest burns in the gilded censer that he holds as he chants the hymns of thatday's service.

There is a lot of natural light that enters through the many stained glass windows. There is a huge stage in front with a glowing cross on the wall. Large red runner in the middle isle leading to the front which matches the red carpet on the stage. They have instruments such as a grand piano, drums, guitar and nice sound system that we were allowed to use upon request. There is a medium size parking lot that fits around 20 vehicles but there is plenty of street parking because of the parks right next to the church. The staff is extremely friendly and very accommodating.

I knew of First Free Evangelical from when I was a kid, and when we went to visit we were very touched by the friendliness of the congregation and pastor; many people made a point to introduce themselves to us, and actually spend some time talking to us. We've since started going there as consistently as we can, and are very happy. Though the building is large, the English-speaking congregation is pretty small, which we prefer; we like that they have services in different languages (Chinese, Spanish, Albanian, that I know of). Pastor Chris is a solid preacher, and is clearly passionate about his calling to this community. Our initial impression of him is that we felt that we could trust him, and that has stayed true as we've gotten to know him. There is childcare and Sunday school for older kids, and usually a coffee hour after the service if you want to stay and meet people in a more relaxed setting.
