However, as time went on, it became apparent that the senior pastor of the church cannot keep her personal political viewpoint out of her sermons. I find this to be very unprofessional, as well as, just disappointing on a personal level. I realized that First United Church was not a good fit for me , and that I now will have to find another church in Bloomington to attend services. The pastor is very biased and partisan in her political beliefs.

They are open and affirming, progressive and everything I love in a socially justice minded-church. The lead pastor Dr Rev Jack Skiles is talented, but doesn't take himself too seriously which I think is an underrated gift in ministry. The Congregation has a nice mix of age, culture, political opinions, & ethnicities. They bring Community involved to a whole new level because I see them setting high standards for radical Christian hospitality in many areas. Their choir and music is a bit old-fashioned but beautiful no less. Don't expect any projectors or praise music but the hymns and the talent in the choir are wonderful. If you are moderate or left of center, I highly recommend this church! Their strong civil rights history can be read online at their website. They have many members with American Baptist or you UCC identities. Peace be with you as you look for a great church!

The music and the service are almost unmatched for their beauty. A large proportion -- probably a…read moremajority -- of the choir is affiliated with the Jacobs School of Music, so you will hear world-class, CD-quality music every single Sunday. Trinity has a REAL commitment to serving the poor, the homeless and the disadvantaged community of Bloomington. On the flip side: unfortunately, Trinity has cliques. Both my partner and I have observed Trinity can be a rather chilly church. He got tired of being ignored; and after I had played with Trinity's bell choir for eight months (and even composed music for them), and then left the group because I finally got a job in Indianapolis and could no longer attend rehearsals -- I received not so much as a peep back from members of the group in my farewell email to the choir. My partner and I are both Episcopalians, and we both like Episcopal worship: so we started saying Morning Prayer in our home on Sunday mornings as our worship and we invited our neighbors to join us.

It's so very peaceful. We visited the gift shop where we were tended to by a zealously attentive gentleman, before we set off to wander a bit. There's much to see here - monuments and Buddhas and the prayer wheels and a whole lot of nature. I'll admit that even though we were told we could visit the monks on the temple, we felt too shy to visit, not wanting to disturb the monks, and because we hadn't studied up on protocols before pur visit. But even without meeting them, wandering the grounds is such a treat. Tip: make sure to bring some change or other offerings. Throughout the property you'll find Buddha statues where you may make an offering. I had limited change, so once I ran out, at the last Buddha I left a small citrine I happened to have in my pocket. I love this place and already feel it calling me back. It's so quiet and beautiful and peaceful. Highly recommend, very pleasant!

I signed up to go on a retreat…read morethat the church was hosting, and they originally welcomed me with open arms to attend both retreats. I received an email the day of the retreat saying that I was no longer allowed to go on the retreat, because I have high fuel autism. They told me that they didn't want someone like me to attend their retreats. This was all said to me in a 24 hour period of time by one of the priests at the church. I would not recommend attending this church, because of how they treat certain members of their congregation.

The sun shines through the stained glass and it's just so nice. Usually, during the school year at least, the music is a bit more lively with extra choir members and musicians. Lots of welcoming activities and committees for new members and students alike. Family friendly and very warm overall.
