This is pretty large consignment style record store, there is a lot to go through, some organized some not so much. Prices seem fair and you can find some cool vinyl but you are gonna spend some time digging through crates on the ground, there is one listening station available and works and sounds good enough to sample what you find. I bought what is probably a crappy little record player because I spend more time at home now and I was harkening back to a time when I listened to whole albums nonstop without skipping tracks (I'm looking at you: What's the Story (Morning Glory)?) and I had a sweet little domestic vision of playing a record while I cook dinner and having it sit on a table in my dining room. So I was thrilled when I searched used record stores (um, the new Lana Del Rey is a pre-order for $45[!!!!] and I don't see myself commiting in such a monumental way) and found this one in my neighborhood. Armed with the knowledge from a few YouTube videos, I knew how to handle a record (gently and without touching the grooved portions), how to avoid common pitfalls (mismatched UPC from record and covers for reissues, checking the album cover spine for drop damage, & that the most common scratch place is right at the beginning of track 1 where people drop the needle on the vinyl) along with what can be fixed at home (dusty dirt smudges and smears) and what can't (deeper scuffs, scratches, warping). Also learned (surprisingly) a sealed record does not necessarily mean mint condition, it could be warped or damaged despite being unopened. Not an expert yet but confident enough to at least go in to the store. I practiced first at Goodwill but their selection must get picked over by resellers right quick because it was stuff that shouldn't even be for sale. Crossroads was my 3rd stop. My understanding is that this is like an antique mall where there are many sellers using the space. When I got my receipt, he said fifty sellers, I think. This was confusing at first because I saw "rock" then proceeded to keep seeing "rock" in every row. It looked like anything valuable (maybe over $30-50) was kept up front but the covers are placeholders in the stacks. As far as covid compliance, people kept their distance and wore masks. I had a nice Friday off from work flipping thru the bins and found a few things I think I could see myself listening to: Some french pianist doing the Beatles mashed up with classical pieces, and a Charlie Parker quartet/quintet greatest hits (can't go wrong there). I spent $12 on the two and was told the receipt doesn't matter so much as the sticker because it links to the specific seller. My record player is shipping so I don't have it yet but I anticipate coming here with some regularity. I also followed one of the sellers on Facebook, it's "hamspapershack". I'm never gonna be a major collector or drop a ton of money, but I can see myself growing a modest collection of used records that I listen to on sunny afternoons, rainy reading days, or probably most often, making dinner. I'm glad Crossroads is hanging in! A few housekeeping details: they take payment cards and have a small parking area of about 3 spaces. I also heard a tip in my YouTube research that some/most record stores will have a turntable for you to try a record yourself- not sure if this is Rona Protocol or like this all the time, but this one didn't have a customer turntable that I saw. read more

First time here and was incredibly excited to check this place out as I had heard from friends about how much selection they carried. My partner and I had been walking and I still had what was now an empty can of LaCroix by the time we made it to the store. I figured it wouldn't be much of an issue after verifying there was no posted signs about drinks but the can was empty and since there was no recycling or trash nearby, I would just hold it until I found a proper disposal. I made it a point as I wandered through the store perusing, out of respect, to hold the can in one hand, away from any merchandise and use my other hand to flip through records, so as not to even give the appearance that I was being careless, because I'm just generally in love with record stores and I wanted to be polite. My partner ended up finding some excellent records and when we went up to pay, the older gentleman cashier/clerk was waiting and checked us out. He glared at me the entire time, not saying a single word during payment and I said thank you have a good day and we turned to the door and as we just were beginning to walk away, he cleared his throat to catch our attention and with a look of absolute disgust, said to me, "Don't bring your drinks around our records!". No prelude or even remote attempt at mentioning this to me on a human or customer service level. This genuinely caught me off guard and I was almost speechless as there are so many different ways you can approach a customer interaction and he chose to try to belittle me as a nuisance instead of perhaps a kind reminder. I stopped and corrected him that I never once had my drink around the records and explained how it happened and he interrupted me to tell me "Yeah, but that's how it all starts". He then mumbled some unintelligible comments to himself and walked away. I've lived in Portland and always had wonderful experiences at dozens of record stores and always felt welcomed. This lands on my list of places I'll never bother to return to as I'd rather give my money to a local shop that is super kind; this town has plenty of those. read more

If you are interested in vinyl, this is a good place to check. They are not well marked and parking is confusing. But they have a good selection. It is a coop of independent sellers. The back right corner is especially well organized and has a unique collection of country, rock, jazz, punk, krautrock and obscure items. In a word, overwhelming. Rows of different vendors with different methods of categorizing their vinyl so it takes awhile to sort it all out. But the selection and sheer volume is pretty amazing. A little unsettling to find same record at different prices on a different row. Bargain bins down below tables are haphazard but it's all good. That being said, two hours later, I walked out with 10 new additions to my collection with an average price of $6 each. I'll be back. read more

Great selection and helpful, friendly staff! Parking is a bit weird; very few spots and can be a little tricky getting out, depending on which direction you need to go. However, that really is a moot point. The amount of vendors, aisle, records and variety at Crossroads (aptly named) is really impressive. Since there are multiple vendors, the filing is different for each section and some have bargains bins/sales while others may not; take your time when looking! Also, there are crates of free records at the front of the store; very tattered and worn cases but it's FREE and there's some wonderfully weird stuff there (James Bond soundtracks, Bach, eclectic jazz, etc). I left with 14 records for $37.50, with 6 of these records being free and 3 of the purchased records on sale. And now I patiently wait for my record player to arrive so I can begin to enjoy my "new" vinyl! read more

Definitely my favorite record store in Portland. Plan to spend a lot of time here if you really want to check everything out. The store is really large and each section is a bit different from the next. There's a lot of cross-over between sellers but once you find an area with a selection up your alley you'll easily come away with a few LPS. I'm iffy on this place. It says on their door that they get their lp's from over 35 dealers. The dealers seem to have sections because there will be rock records here and more rock records across the store that begin with the letter A and go to Z again. I'm not sure if the dealers price their records themselves. Crossroads does not have a listening station to try your records out. So beware or bring a portable record player. Some dude when I was in their had one made by Numark. Crossroads sections are big enough for my taste. Their general sections seem too big and overwhelming and their special sections like Punk, Garage, Compilations, Rockabilly only have about 15-30 records. I was surrised that they had a Rockabilly 7" section. They also had a Korla Pandit section with at least 10 lps with was pretty weird and wonderful. It was small but neat. I found a '60s surf compilation lp I bought at the Goodwill for $1in mint condition selling for $35 here!. That was a nice to find. Coolest find was a 1966 garage punk lp on Decca Records. Can't remember the band name. It was $60 though. Last time I shopped here I walked out with a Play guitar With The Ventures lp for $12. It has a chord book with all the parts of the song (bass, rhythm guitar, lead) with a record where they play all the parts slow and fast so you can play along! It was a pretty cool find and I actually played along with it. The guy who hosts Drinking From Puddles was in here when I was shopping around. That's a pretty killer recommendation right there if you know his radio show, he always plays the best stuff! If they stocked more garage, punk, surf, exotica, garage compilations I'd shop here tons more. Even their blues and folk section are really skimpy. Giving 3 stars. Collectors will probably find more here than the average guy. There's also a music store a couple blocks east of Crossroads across the street, Jackpot records further east on the same street, Powells books if you're looking for things to do. Lots of place to eat along the way. Have fun. Make an afternoon out of it. Makes a nice light walk of nothing else. Don't put stickers on album covers. I found this place to be an irritating nightmare. There were probably a couple dozen new records here, but everything else is used and looking to be in questionable condition. And every single used record has a sticker on the album cover. Why even bother? I understand the impulse, and I wouldn't want customers trying to rip me off, either. However, other record stores have this figured out. For instance, Landfill Rescue Unit puts all of their used records in plastic sleeves, and puts on the plastic sleeves individualized stickers stating the album info and the price. It's not that hard. And navigating the place is almost impossible if there are more than four or five people in the store. Most of the aisles are dead ends, so you're constantly getting stuck behind other customers. There are only so many times you can say "excuse me. I need to squeeze by you." I expected more from this place based on the reputation it has somehow acquired. Browsing the records was fine for a few minutes, since the selection is pretty big, but it lost its charm once I realized that I wasn't going to be able to buy anything. If you like browsing old, beat-up records and you don't care about your collection's aesthetics, then you might like this place. If you're a bit more discerning, you probably won't. read more

My mind is still reeling from my first visit to this place. I spent 3 hours there and only got through about 1/3rd the store, and ended up buying a ton of records in the process. I came across so many records that I've been searching for for years that none of the other shops in Portland have. Tons of great 80's punk, post punk, industrial, metal, ambient, etc. As others have mentioned, the store is set up by each vendor, so there's multiple genre sections, multiple alphabetical sections, etc, all through the store. This is the kind of place that you're not gonna like if you come here looking for a specific title. Just let the place surprise you, and it definitely will. read more

Good record store, but gotta ding them for putting hard-to-peel off stickers on the albums, even expensive collectibles. Tried very carefully to get an "album behind the counter" sticker off a $40.00 original pressing that I bought from them and it destroyed the cover even though I was being very very very careful, reducing the value immediately. Next time I am going to ask them take the stickers off for me before I buy it and see what they say. More mindful or should I say 'state of the art' record stores have figured out a way around pricetagging the cover, and they should learn from them, particularly if they probably consider themselves an collector's/audiophile store and an expert in vinyl sales. I also asked them what their return policy was, that is, if I could return a record that was skipping, and their answer, ironically, was not once you peel the label off because then they won't know what vendor it is. They really want those things permanently fixed on there, which is fine if you're still living in the 70s and there are no other solutions, but believe it or not there are other solutions for pricing delicate collectibles. They should consider investing in those solutions. I know they can afford it given the amount of vinyl I alone was starting to buy there. I'd consider taking it back for a full refund, but I still really want that pressing so they've kind of got me by the you know what. To top it off, the irony is I already took the pricetag off so they probably wouldn't accept it back anyway. read more

It's hard to review this place. It's a HUGE space. About equal in vinyl count to Amoeba San Francisco - but ALL used. The thing is it's all different vendors. So each vendor has an allotted space to sell. This means that if you want to shop for Garage/Psych - you have to go to each individual seller's section and find the garage/Psych section. They do have a few dedicated sections for Blues and World, but with other Blues and World sections still existing in sellers sections. The prices and quality ranges drastically from section to section. Everything from beat-up dollar bin records priced at $8-15, to sections that will make you drool with each cover flip. There's enough digging that deals can be found. And if you have the cash to spend, there's sections that will no doubt provide something for you. Overall I'd say 75% of the store is a wasteland, with heavily buried gems. And another 25% (about three very reliable sellers) is top notch selection, but usually priced very knowingly of the market value (which is not a bad thing). There's a wall of rares that is always intriguing, and usually leans a little more the experimental and art-rock side. If you like digging and you want to kill a few (2 minimum) hours digging. This is the place. read more

My favorite record store in Portland hands down. No competition. If you want it, they probably have it - if not a few copies. In various conditions, in various sections of the store. Necessities and rarities. Crossroads is a one-to-two-hour-minimum experience. If you're really dedicated, you'll probably find yourself sitting criss-cross on the floor most of the time and running around back and forth a lot. There's so much to look at and the prices are usually extremely reasonable. Even if after two hours, you only find yourself only buying a single album, it's always worth the experience. I bought an album off the internet for about $12. One side works, I figured, well that's probably how that goes. Decided to try this record store. Bought $50 of vinyl on the nose, including a $2 copy of Van Halen - Van Halen, figuring it would be completely rekt. It is a bit scratched, but unlike my ebay album, plays both sides without skipping. So far (haven't got through all the albums yet), they all play without skipping. The Classic Yes album I picked up for $6 looks practically new. No scratches at all, and includes all the goodies. So, I'll be back with another $50 next check... read more

This is arguably the best record store in Portland. To my mind, there is no question, but I know everyone has their favorites. I have never come to Crossroads and left without a record I was thrilled to have stumbled upon. The reason they have such a phenomenal selection is because of their consignment model. Throughout the store, records from any number of different sellers mingle together. Multiple listening station are available. Solid dollar selection, and reasonable prices for most records. If you're a digger and you come to Portland without hitting this spot, you're doin' it wrong. Be sure to check out the all acoustic Artichoke Music next door. Let me start by saying that I have gone to this store several times, and I have spent lots of money on vinyls. I went there yesterday(1/27/21) to see if they had any new albums in the Latin section. I went in..maybe 3 customers in the store besides me. The guy behind the counter, a tall, thin, blond man, with a type of mohawk haircut..kind of. I was looking at the albums and deciding which to buy. For some reason, that guy was playing some awful, horrible music, one that had a high pitch, and it sounded like the album had gotten stuck because it kept repeating the same lyrics over and over...music very loud..speaker was pretty close to my head, so I just could not focus and the repeativeness of the song, started to give me a headache..I went up to the counter and asked nicely if he could turn the music down or perhaps change the album. He said, no way if you don't like it you can leave...to which I said, so you don't care to accommodate your costumers??To which he said, sorry that is the music that we play here..I said, well it is giving me a headache can you just turn it down a bit? He said, no you can leave..bye! I got a little upset at that time and I said, well that is horrible music, I know--I am a DJ, and I have come here many times to spend my hard earned money and you can turn it down? He said "no' you can leave---bye...so I left and said Okay this is the last time I am spending money here---he didn't care...Never going back to spend money there--as goos a music vinyls they have. This place is so much fun! It's totally different than your typical corporate record store. The layout is by vendor, and then by genre, so forget about coming in with your preconceived idea of the band you want in the genre you like. It's set up for you to explore, find new wax, and support small collectors with eclectic tastes. Sometimes you can even browse collections from local college radio stations, which is my favorite because radio djs tend to write summaries of the muscal style and give 1-5 ratings to each track to make it easier for other djs, and they also tend to get donations from the most obscure local artists that it's harder to find online. The best thing I ever got here was an original pressing of Loveless, over 15 years old and under 100 dollars, but it's also thanks to this store that I have an extensive collection of really weird artsy seventies vinyl, like the singer songwriter record who wrote a song for every zodiac sign and then made very detailed cartoon cover art! Basically if you have some cash to spend, love vinyl albums without having a specific thing that you know you're looking for, this is the best place in the world to flesh out your collection and add some conversation pieces! read more

This is my kind of record store. Simple and organized. I don't need a million genres with vague descriptions, just a basic breakdown of Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, etc.... From there keep it nice and tightly alphabetical, so I can skip right to what I want. I don't have time to track it down in the "Post 1960's surf punk / rockabilly blues section". I'd really like to tell record store people to just get over themselves when they do that kind of BS. You won't find She and Him, MGMT, Modest Mouse or any death metal here. Just a solid selection of classic albums that deserve to be there. The prices differ from vendor to vendor. You might find it for $10 in one bin and $6 in another. There are usually discounts from certain vendors each month making your finds pretty cheap. Nice little section of World music. I found an awesome 1957 Belly Dancing record from India the other day. It'll be great background music when I'm making tikka masala. Now I have to go back for the vintage Hawaiian Luau records. If you prefer finding your music without the "Too cool for school" record store ego, this is probably a place for you. read more

By far my favorite record shop in pdx. :) This place is special to me. I've been a patron here since 1994. This is where I made my start in vinyl collecting. First LP: 'King Crimson - Larks' Tongue in Aspic'. Chosen because of the cool cover and my older brother told me to check out some Crimson. Fucking album blew my mind and the world hasn't been the same since. Yes, the place is scattered out multi vendor style. Think of it as the ultimate vinyl swap meet but only one roof and one cashier. One of my favorite things in the world is to have the day off and go to a record store. Crossroads always satisfies my vinyl cravings, and heres why: As stated in many other reviews, this place has multiple vendors. If you want something specific, but only have ten minutes, good luck in finding it. But I know alot of vinyl buyers enjoy rifling through crates for hours, and thats where crossroads is the perfect record store. It reminds me of my childhood (granted im only in my twenties), going to garage sales with my pop to look musical deals. Also, if you find something you'd like to take home, but its a bit too pricey? just go to another vendor-wallah! $5 cheaper! There is a vendor in the corner that does have fairly new stuff (alot of punk and metal), but for the most part it is older. The guy who I think owns it (hes always there at least..) is knowledgeable and always has some tasty jams playing on the speakers. read more

I had the great good luck of finding Crossroads as I was looking for a turntable and receiver for a Christmas gift. The owner was really nice even though my budget wasn't big and we are not audiophiles, just a couple of folks who remember loving vinyl and our 70s stereos. He steered me toward a simple but perfect JVC turntable and a few days later had a Sony receiver ready to go. I also found a very satisfying bunch of LPs for a new "starter" collection. As a hardcore vinyl junkie, I have got to hand it to Crossroads: they have the best selection of used vinyl in the city, hands down. I can - and do - spend hours in here, combing through the racks and stacks for the best on wax. And rarely walk away empty handed. Some have complained about the scattered layout and the fact that you might find the same record in six different locations, but that's because Crossroads devotes space to a variety of individual vendors, each with their own separate collections. Rather than complain about this, I embrace it: if I find that elusive George Harrison record in one spot, say, but the cover is worn or the album has a scratch, I'm likely able to find another, better copy in a different area of the store. And the prices can vary widely, too. This is all a win-win for the consumer. I always hit the New Arrivals section first - these are the bins immediately to the right when you first walk in. True to its name, the selection is updated very frequently, and you are apt to find some great discoveries here. Speaking of selection, as previously noted it's fantastic: I have bought classic rock, jazz, blues, oldies and soundtracks here - sometimes all at once. There's plenty for the country, alternative, punk, world music, and (insert your genre) aficionado, as well. Another tip: look high and low. Literally. There are bargain records ($1 and less) located under many of the bins. And the prices are already pretty reasonable to begin with! The one caveat: if you want new records or local artists, stick with Music Millennium. But if you don't mind scouring dusty bins for records that might not be in quite mint condition, there's no better place in PDX than Crossroads! read more
